Pretty much the same deal as the one posted by Scotty (http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/93886) about a month ago, but this time the discount on the 45-150mm lens is about $20 better, but AUD vs USD is not as good…it's $595.66 USD shipped, so on the balance it's a better deal this time :)

  • Looks like a great price

  • As cheap as just the body on Amazon uk (And cheaper than about everywhere else).

I'm tossing up between this and the NEX F3 for a bigger Sensor in a smaller package, or Pentax K-r, for the DSLR experience at a low cost.

Just my opinion but I think you'd get a better shooting experience with the G5 than the entry level NEX cameras. It feels more natural to shoot with the Panasonic cameras (buttons and things are where they're supposed to be, less hunting around in the menus for settings) and it's just better value for money. You also get a built in electronic viewfinder with the G5. If you were talking about the NEX 6 then it'd be a different story. But you'd be in a different price range too. This is a pretty sweet price for what it does.

1080p video at 60fps. I'd replace my GH1 now if I had a bit of cash.

The sensor size difference between Micro Four Thirds and APS-C isn't massive by the way. Sensor size doesn't always equal better images and having a shallow depth of field isn't everything (and can be detrimental at times). That said, you can still get shallow depth of field using a Micro Four Thirds camera. If you're a shallow depth of field junkie and don't have a lot of money to spend, get some fast C-mount lenses.

    • Thanks mate. I do love my depth of field, so it's good (but makes the decision more difficult) to know it's pretty good in both. I think I may miss the viewfinder, but I also think I'm more likely to be able to smuggle the NEX into concerts/festivals where pro cameras aren't allowed due to it looking like a compact with the lens off.
Also I've heard the stock lenses for the NEX are better than for the G5, but of course selection is not as wide…

This was on special last month as well with some good discussions there especially comparing it with a budget DSLR kit. I still reckon that these are two different products, but do check out the old discussions.

  • saw this the other day and am planning on buying. glad i got my 28degrees mastercard in the post the other day - nice timing !

I have a g1 and love it, but the flash wont fire so nice time to upgrade for this price. Already have sigma 19mm lens, 45-200mm, and olympus 45mm. Will likely sell the 45-145mm - pm me if anyone wants to buy the 45-145mm off me :)

These are inbtween size of a dslr and the pen/nex cameras. I like have the viewfinder on the G series.

Nice upgrade from the G1 - looking forward to receiving it

ps. typo in the description, the lens is the 45-145mm as per the title, not the 45-200mm as per the description.

    • thanks for that, fixed the description.

Panasonic LUMIX G Vario 45-150mm f/4.0-5.6 ASPH Lens - Black
    B&H # PA45150B Mfr # H-FS45150K

    Temporarily out of stock

  • I bought the G5 during the last B&H special last month. It arrived on Wed and so far I couldn't be more pleased. The G5 is a great 4/3 camera with lots of very good reviews. And I have to say B&H were fantastic to deal with. The 45-150mm lens was out of stock last time as well, but only took about a week to be back in stock.

I added the 3 year Square Trade warranty, a spare battery, a couple of filters, a US-OZ adapter and a Camera Bag. The bag was a gamble as I wanted the smallest bag possible, but without having the camera in hand it is very difficult to assess bags. I only blew $17.50 so no big deal.

The Lowepro Event Messenger 100 seems a popular, well priced bag which will easily hold the camera, 2 x lens charger and more, but it is a bit bigger than my ideal case. Teds and JB HiFi sell this for around $49. In the end I stumbled across an Israeli made bag in a local camera shop and bought that on Thursday. I'm really impressed with the design aesthetic and the quality of the construction. It is smaller than the Lowepro but fits the G5, 2 lens, charger, spare battery, filters etc. with room for another small lens.

If I can help with any more info let me know. You can see my first few pix at https://plus.google.com/communities/118394128486220809077

PS. The EVF is amazing resolution.

    • I bought the camera on this deal, should be delivered on wednesday.

"I added the 3 year Square Trade warranty"

Thought about the sqaure trade warranty but wasnt sure about the service for it in australia. Have you had any experience with them?

is there any option for warranty by itself, not the spill and drop option/

      cheers

      • @dmchart, I ended up phoning B&H mainly because I wasn't able add the 45-150mm lens to my order, because it was was on back order. I was assured by several people at B&H that the square trade warranty is an international warranty, so I included it. I'm pretty sure you get a 1 year Panasonic Warranty, but it wasn't clear whether it would be handled here or whether you would have to send it back to the USA. The bottom line is to take good care of the kit.

My only criticism of the G5 so far is that the manual leaves a lot to be desired as for clarity and giving you a good basic understanding of the camera. This is my first 4/3 camera and there is quite a lot to come to grips with if you want to move beyond the IA setting.

        • thanks for the update.

looks like i can buy from amazon among other places, though bhphoto looks a bit cheaper if i wanted accident protection.

          http://www.amazon.com/SquareTrade-3-Year-Accident-Protection…

reviews seem positive, but 3 year warranty is from day 1, so in fact only extra 2 year warranty, which is fine.

also they deduct the value of the repairs from the camera value, so you might only get to use it once or twice ..

reviews for square trade seem better than mack extended warranty.

looks like should be able to get it serviced here, but if the repair is $350 , you only have $150 left for the next repair..
