Samsung 840 Series *Pro* 256GB 2.5 Inch SATA Solid State Drive @Amazon £156 ($230) Delivered

350

This appears to be the cheapest price in the world. Last time this was on OzBargain, it was offered for $250 shipped from Shopping Express. StaticIce lists the cheapest price at $254 from MSY. Also the lowest price on Amazon, according to Camelx3 (dropped about £7 in past couple of weeks).

This is the pro. Not the regular. Pro as in "Harvey Norman Professional".

840 Pro versus 840

  • 7% more space
  • Hardware AES-256 encryption
  • 3 times longer durability (not the same as reliability)
  • Uses 28% less power when writing, same at idle, reads not sure.
  • Light Workload – 8% more responsive; based on disk busy time
  • Heavy Workload – 25% more responsive; based on disk busy time.
  • 67% longer warranty - 5 years
  • 38% more expensive (using £125 for non Pro)

Anandtech

If you are a typical home user and not doing anything hardcore then the performance difference is hardly noticeable so the extended warranty might be the only tangible benefit as you are unlikely to wear out the drive in a hurry unless you use it for torrents 24/7 via high speed uncapped broadband - Drive Endurance

  • that's quite a good pick up neil - big claim that its the "cheapest in the world" - but at this price - it might actually be getting close to being true

  • +2

Torrenting to SSD is kinda pointless and imho foolish. Unless you reeeally want to be a power-miser there's no reason to use SSD's for torrents.

    • +1

The point was drive endurance, but torrents really aren't that big a deal here either. Having swap/virtual memory on a machine which is memory starved and doing lots of thrashing is probably the worst case that most people will have.

  • Price already up to 172 pounds sadly.

    • VAT gets removed when you go to checkout thus making it the cheaper price (~£156 delivered).

      • Ah you're exactly right, thanks, just picked one up.

  • is this the best value at this price? Looking at pro vs non pro i dont really need the non pro features?

  • I got the 512 version a few weeks back, need to get the SSD to USB cable separately as it only came with software to transfer your data…. bit useless without the cable…

      LoL!

  • Good price, but I am thinking about OCZ Vector.

    • +2

Go the OCZ, but be prepared to RMA every year. http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1853140. I have replaced my OCZ twice now and each time, its a complete loss of data. No indication it will fail. Just fails.

      • +2

Yeah, I've had OCZ replace 4 bad sets of ram over 3 years. I'll compliment their return policy. They're customer service and returns process is super streamline, but sadly, I think it got that way from lots of experience.

    • I got 2 OCZ Vertex 2 60gb SSDs a few years ago, still going strong… one is in a Microserver and the other in a desktop PC. Will be transferring the desktop one into another Microserver.

      • My Vertex 2 died without warning, wiping all the data (had a backup), I RMA'ed it and they pretty much accepted it without question, and sent me another brand.

  • Hmmm. Is it worth the extra $24 (~10%) for local stock?

  • -6

Same price to pick this up locally if you can claim the 10% GST back.

  • -5

You guys are looser for -ve a statement that is completely true.

    • +3

Loose? I'm the tightest I have been in years thanks to OzBargain.

    • .

    • +1

actually quite true… if you pick up from MSY and claim 10% back with Salary Sacrifice u will only pay $233. some companies dont allow salary sacrifice for items without GST components (as in buying overseas).

this will most likely be eligible for SS as it can fit in a notebook.

    It shows £155.76 or $238.37.

To get $230 as per title, we should check out with GBP n let our bank do the currency exchange?

    Its global warranty?

    Thanks,

    • The $230 figure was just a market rate provided by Google. Depends on what rate your card charges.

Not sure about the global warranty. If there is an issue upon arrival, Amazon will usually sort things out.

      • How abt Amazon's warranty n return policy?

If there is any issue, could we return it? In this case, we have to pay for return shipping fee?

        Thanks,

  • I got my Sandisk Extreme 240 GB for $199.

  • Sold! I also went and got a Data Doubler kit for Mac Mini from OWC http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/DIYIMM11D2/ for around AU$40. Much cheaper than MacFixit or Amazon. Includes all the tools too.

  • Good timing, just had an ssd start to show signs of failure last night, thanks.

    • After how long champ? You still prefer SSDs even after the failure? Am considering buying my first one with this deal, thanks OP.

      • About ~2yrs, yep still prefer SSD's, I could never go back to a mechanical drive for a boot drive. Go for it, you wont regret it.

  • if i didnt already have 3 id be all over this

  • Isn't the 500gb from B&H a much better deal?

    • In terms of $/GB, yes, but that was the samsung 840 (non-Pro). This SSD (Pro) is aimed at a slightly different market. The Pro offers faster read/write speeds, higher endurance and general better performance.

      • Right I got you, cheers.

  • +2

Got one! I'll finally have one of these schmancy "SSDs", quite excited :D

  • so tempted n ordered one.

Generally how long does it take to ship to here?

When select the shipping method, it says 5-10 days. However, after successfully paid, it says DELIVERY ESTIMATE: Saturday 16 Mar 2013 - Wednesday 20 Mar 2013 by 9:00 pm :( which means 10-15 days

  • gotta +ve just for the harvey norman "pro" mention

  • Ordered from Amazon UK as soon as I saw this on OzBargain. Estimated delivery was 19th March. Still haven't received it, seems to be stuck in "GRIMBERGEN" as of 5th March. Anyone else successfully get one off this deal?

    • Yeah mate - mine came over a week ago.

  • For those still interested, I just bought one for AUD $234.42.
