TIL the MX500 is now EOL

    • EOL is only for 250GB and 4TB version according to the official website.

Still a few MX500 s in my computer holding strong atm.

Glad to see this added. I had two fail on me. Only used for backing up files thankfully.

    • Are they good to use as a primiary boot drive for an older laptop?
      high failure rate seems concerning…

    • I'm confused.
How is "archival" similar to write intensive? Doesn't that mean you write once then put it in storage?
Maybe once a week for rotating backups.

"write intensive" would mean something like swap space, or a constantly updated database.

I have one of these I recently started using to hold virtual machines, with a USB3 adapter, so I can move them around.
(For training purposes, not mission critical.) Is that a bad idea?

      • More so that don't store anything important on it id say…

I'm by no means an expert in this area and did no research into the drive beforehand or since. I can only relay my experience. Two drives, with files transferred maybe a couple times a week failed after around a month. From memory, I had more that haven't failed as far as I know. Similar experience with cheap Patriot SATA SSDs for what it's worth.

For added context, never had an issue with Samsung (albeit more expensive). Knock on wood.

Thanks for your insights. I think I will spend a bit more and get a more reliable brand. I've been using the mechanical hard drive in this laptop for 7 years without issues and I cannot afford any faults as it my primary boot drive.

        • Update: I looked through my inventory. I had one Crucial BX500 fail. The others were Patriot (P210) if that makes any difference.

          All purchased early 2023.

    • Bought about 10 x 240GB BX500 & used for about 3 years ago however a few SSD Failures. (Daily used as the OS Drive)

      • 2 x Very Weird issue write speed dropping to 15MB/s SSD wasn't even that full (Might have been a firmware issue so old just replaced the SSD using same SATA Cable)
      • 2 x Completely stopped working no way to recover data & no early warning signs

I would recommend the MX500 they seem to be alot more reliable than the BX500.

Have about 5 x 250GB MX500 for over 3+ years with no failures so def a better & more reliable drive.

      • Wow, that's bad. I know all computer parts eventually fail (especially hard drives) but statistically the failure rates are way too high with some of these cheap SSD brands.

        • Yep I agree this is why backups are so important these days as even expensive enterprise drives can be prone to failure.

MX500 have a 5 years warranty vs BX500 which only have 3 year warranty so possibly better designed for reliability not sure which other SSD brands offer 5 year warranty though on their SSDs.

About a month ago I got ORICO NAND SSD Y-20 1TB for $47 with amazon promo coupons so def some better priced deals around on SSDs just have to wait & keep watching but not sure how good/reliable these ORICO SSDs will be.

On a side note you will notice a huge improvements switching HD to SSD for OS/Apps in respects to boot-up time + useability.

  • A nice upgrade for any PS4.

  • Thanks for the deal op, a few drives for some fun clones of xp retro builds on identical hardware, all that was missing was those sweet ssd load times.

  • Would this suitable for torrent?
