That's pretty much the price I paid for 256GB 14 months ago!

  • Hmmm this or the Samsung 840 for $60 less… any idea which would be better for a 2010 iMac (SATA2) or is it much of a muchness?

or is it much of a muchness

The muchness between Crucial M4 and Samsung 840 is that Crucial M4 are very favourably reviewed and are considered very reliable. But, Samsung 840 is not bad either. For 60 dollars lesser, I would personally choose the 840. Since your interface is SATA2, you won't get the full speed of the SSD but it'll still be a considerable difference between HDD and SSD. I bought a 256GB SSD a year ago for $420. 512GB drives are cheaper than that now but I don't regret it. SSDs are a great investment if you want speed.

Get the samsung, it has a much faster write speed.

    • The Samsung is faster and more reliable (there was a site that reported percentages of SSDs sent back for warranty, Samsung had a lower percent than Crucial).

      EDIT: Here - http://www.behardware.com/articles/881-7/components-returns-…

I paid more to get the 840 after my Crucial M4 died. Paying less to get the 840… There's no need to even think about it.

      • Where is that price available?

        • B and h photo video.
          But they're now back ordered.
Still, you can lock in the price and just wait 2-3 weeks.

        • Thanks!

        • http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/94897 Both offers still current so this gives people the choice to purchase the one they think is best for their own needs.

  • which is the better deal? This one or the one a couple days ago for the Samsung 840?

  • 500MB/s Read, 260MB/s Write - Pulled from the Crucial website. Didn't quickly see it on the Amazon page.

Also, don't be too fussed with a bracket - whilst they work well and are neater, double sided tape does the trick.

  • Yeah prices are dropping nicely…

  • Yes, drop drop drop a little more. Samsung of course!

  • Skip the M4.

So at first the speeds were okay, then a new firmware came out that made the speeds much better. Then the drives died everywhere and a new firmware came out to fix it. But you couldn't use it in your Mac, and had to plug it into a PC first to upgrade. Then the released another firmware which killed performance down to what it was originally. Then they started releasing firmwares that still wouldn't upgrade in a Mac, so you'd upgrade it on your PC, and then plug it into your Mac and it would no longer be recognized.

Crucial have screwed their Mac (and PC if speed is important for you and your SSD) customers at every turn, missed their own deadlines on the forums, and otherwise refused to comment about the ongoing firmware issues.

Give their drives a miss. They are a bad company.

Disclaimer: I've own the M4 512GB for 18 months. I won't be buying one again.

    • You can definitely upgrade the firmware on a mac, I can't remember how, but I definitely did it.

      • The first update their ever issued worked. Every one since then up until the most recent one, doesn't.

This is for USB keys on MacBook Pro though. Most of us who have it don't have a CD drive, and burning it to CD probably works.

The issue is they promised to provide a USB version over a year ago and have silently failed to delivery, much to everyone's consternation.

Also they advise not to upgrade it in your PC anymore because a lot of the more recent firmwares will not boot on a MacBook Pro.

IMHO, I rather get OCZ Agility 4 512GB for $389 pickup in melb or QLD, Sequential Reads and Write 420 MB/s and 410MB/s UMART

  • I have the 128 gb M4 in my Asus laptop, works really well. I haven't upgraded the firmware but should, since it is known to do the BSOD after 5000 hours in my current firmware version.

I have not tried Samsung 840 but I think the newer SSDs are all very competitive in terms of speed and price. Either way, it's a good buy for this price. Maybe we can get $300 for 512 gb soon?

  • Good deal, but having stocked up on 128GB and 256GB SSDs, I'm waiting for the 1TB SSDs to arrive at an affordable price.

  • A lot of the SSDs offered nowadays (including this one) use multi-level cell (MLC) technology rather than single-level cell (SLC). In practical terms, that means a MLC drive won't last as long as a SLC drive, and won't be as fast, but is cheaper.

Think of it like the difference between a consumer-level vs server-level HDD. (MLC vs SLC)

    http://enterprisefeatures.com/2011/06/the-difference-between…

    • MLC cells in a non-server load will last so long the SSD will be worthless before the cells die of old age.
Further, many enterprise drives now are using MLC instead of SLC.

  • A great deal but I'd be more inclined to go with the Samsung drive listed earlier. Either way you will not be disappointed though!

  • Its just gone up $45 to $394.99!!!

Buying off Amazon is like gambling recently, prices change daily and worst still it can change on the same day like this deal. Getting tired of it big time. :(
