"Announcing our Special Block Sale!

For the next few days we're offering 2 of our usenet blocks for significant discounts. First is the usual 550 GB usenet blocks (counting the 10% header allowance) for just $20. The second is our 2.2 TB block (including the 10% allowance) on sale for $70. We don't place the 2 TB block on sale often, so this is a rare opportunity for even larger savings. The sale lasts until 12 AM on March 2."

That's about 3 pm on March 3 Australian time.

Over 1550 Days of Retention
50 SSL-Encrypted Connections
No Expiration Date
No Monthly Fees"

For those who use indexers to search usenet, there has been growth lately in what is available since the demise of earlier options like NZBMatrix. With apologies to Mark Twain, the reports of usenet's death have been greatly exaggerated.

I have also found that takedown notices are reacted to less quickly with NewsgroupDirect than with some others I have tested.

My affiliate link is below. It won't cost you any extra but it will keep me in usenet blocks.

    Who/Why is Mr DotCom?

      Who's on 1st. What's on 2nd.

Usenet evolved before private forums to allow people of like mind to discuss topics which were of interest to them. Unlike private forums, no one was in charge, so any comments were allowed. Usenet still exists today for those discussions, but mostly has evolved as a method to distribute binaries without a centralised control of any type.

It is very fast and is mostly used as alternative to the old MegaUpload style sites or torrents, which can be tracked via IP address (sometimes. Various methods are available to make torrents more secure).

There has been moves from copyright owners to send notices to Usenet providers to "take down" material which they believe is in dispute. Most US based usenet providers comply, but at different rates.

To download anything from usenet, there are various methods, from downloading headers from groups to using indexing sites (which is considerably easier). Quite a few indexing sites have been sued to shut them down but quite a number have recently emerged to take their place, using a fully automated system to index.

OK, so you've found an indexer, you've got access to usenet through NewsGroup Direct or similar. The final step is a downloading program. I like SABnzbd+, though others are available. It might be a touch more difficult to set up than clicking on a torrent, but for people who like usenet, it is more than worthwhile.

There are also some great add ons to automate download, like SickBeard or Couch Potato.

Usenet used to be on the edges of the internet and most people still don't know about, but it is becoming more mainstream.

And then there's the first rule of usenet, which is not to talk about usenet. This doesn't relate to the current binaries nature but was actually used back when it was all about discussions. When the great hordes were discovering the internet, it was feared that if they also discovered usenet then the lively and intelligent nature of discussions would be compromised.

Google now has a full index of almost all discussion dating back a couple of decades, which makes for some interesting reading.

Yeah when you get a whole yr unlimited for $95 I think that would be a better option…

It really depends on your usage patterns. For some people, unlike aussieaubs above, 2 TB would last a long time. Definitely for some unlimited accounts will be better. I used to have one, but I worked out by looking at my stats in SABnzbd+ that I was better off with a block account.

      • Yeah good point :) All comes down to usage over that period. 2TB is not that much these days.. well i don't think :)

  • Could be a good alternative account if your existing one is through a different network.

    Check here: http://www.usenet-providers.net/newsgroup-resellers.php

    • Good point, though even different resellers from the same network have their own take down procedures with wildly different times for acting upon notices.

NewsgroupDirect seems to be quite good in that regard, whereas as EasyNews gets rid of disputed copyright material very quickly.

  • What are these guys like? I have always used astraweb are ngd as good?

    • Hopefully others will chime in as well, but I have found them to be excellent for retention and speed. Over the past at least thirteen years I have tried many providers, some good, some bad.

Now with the consolidation in the industry a lot of usenet providers are owned by Highwinds and they basically use the Highwinds back end to help with the retention side, but operate their own billing and take down procedures and the like.

Then there are Astraweb and Giganews which are the other two big providers. Users of usenet quite often will have a Highwinds account like NewsGroup Direct and then another with Astraweb of Giganews to get as much retention as possible.
