Agreed.
Still, it could be worth paying the extra each month. There is a laptop in the bargain, after all.
OK the TCO is $1437.20 over 24 months (contract length). If you go over your limit and hit the $30 extra download cap every month, that is another $720 to add.
OK now the freebies:
The Asus Eee PC 701SD - worth $299 on Staticice
The USB 3G dongle - these are given away with every 3G internet plan
As I have no idea what the phone is, I'll assume it is worth $50.
~$75 per month for unlimited 3G internet and plenty of mobile phone calls. Is that a good deal?
From memory, Dodo amassed more complaints than Telstra in one recent year (2006?), according to the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman annual report. A remarkable achievement considering the relative size of the companies, although it appears Dodo is not as bad these days.
The TIO annual reports' member complaint statistics make very interesting reading, and not just for those shopping for an ISP or phone company. The results of Whirlpool's annual Australian Broadband Survey are also quite interesting. (The 2008 survey closes 31 January.)
There is no such thing as a dodo bargain.
A prize should be awarded to anyone who does this plan and doesn't get hit with fees which make the free stuff pointless.
Dodo have more complaints per customer than any other Australian Telco. Their support is very hard to get ahold of, and on this basis (lets face it.. you WILL need to contact them for something… even if it is to cancel the service). I wouldn't buy this, nor would i recommend it to my worst enemies.
Or like a work colleague who had to call many many times to get a direct debit cancelled after leaving them, and it took Dodo 4 months to get the DD stopped. He couldnt be bothered trying to get the payments back cause it was hard enough to just stop them. Will never go near Dodo.
Dodo? No way! Too much trouble.
no dodo deal is a bargain
Made the mistake long time ago going with dodo adsl never never going to deal with them.
I am still on Dodo 512/128 ADSL true unlimited for $50/m. So far so good for 4 years.
But my friend got hit my the so call dodo deal: $30 a month for 5Gb of download a month with shaping. It looks good. In the actual fact:
Connection will be shaped when download exceed 5Gb and charged for $0.25/Mb and cap @ $69.
That means downloading 5000Mb is $30 a month, getting extra 156Mb (@56kbps speed) will cost him extra $39.
It is just like having a Credit Card, if use it in discipline way, it is a good deal. Otherwise, the ridiculous interest rate will going to double the debt up in no time.
dodo= risky choice = No, thanks
Long time ago I signed up with one of their dial-up plans. Sounded like a pretty good deal at first glance, almost too good. Didn't read the small print thoroughly enough unfortunately and ended up paying three times as much as with other companies.
Dodo, no thank you, never never again! Surprised they're still in business.
Watch out - on those 250 MB accounts they will charge you when you download over and above your quota, which you are almost certainly going to do on such a small monthly limit. Though at least - I believe - Dodo cap the charge at $30 extra a month.
