Free Fishing Rod to Junior Anglers (under 16) Register for Swanfish 2013 $10 Reg. Fee PERTH

690

Bit of a Niche "bargain" here so not expecting many votes however as fishing was a big thing for me growing up as a child I feel the need to pass this on. Further more may not be considered a bargain anyway.

Basically take your child/younger sibling and register for Swan Fish 2013 (Fishing Comp on the Swan River in Perth) Juniors cost $10 and receive a Jarvis Walker Fishing Rod and Reel set. For this you need to register for Swanfish at any Getaway Outdoors Stores.

Nice post, but if you really want your kid to fish with decent equipment, stay away from Jarvis Walker.
Not nice to see a rod break, rost away, lines snapping with amedium fish, line getting tangled, reels stopping to work after the first day …..
There are some good rods available at decent money, and some quality reels (Shimano) that outlast those cheap JW combos, several times, and you don't have to keep buying them.
(Just had to throw away a big fat reel that just rosted away quitely …)

Worst advice I've ever heard. I bet you i can catch just as many fish on a Jarvis Walker rod then you can on your "preferred rod" You can catch a fish with a bloody stick and some fishing line.

      • Did you even read his post?

He's saying avoid the crap cheap brands and get something that will actually last.

        • And if you spent hundreds of $$'s on gear for your kid to go fishing and they don't end up enjoying it and don't want to do it again? Are you not better to use a cheap rod/tackle and see how they go before making such a commitment ?

Not talking about hundreds of $$$
$40 for this Abu Garcia Combo: http://www.torpedo7.com.au/products/XXC02NNAF
40$ for this shimano Fishing Combo: http://www.torpedo7.com.au/products/3RC02NNAS/title/r2f-salt…

I Myself am not a fan of expensive tackle, the average price of Rod-Reel-Line is about 100$.

I didn't say you won't be catching any fish with JW, but the likelyhood of the line curling up on the water, or even making a birdsnest when casting, the reel seizing after a few uses or worse rosting away is much much higher.

And I have bought JW at Kmart, and they always failed me.

For me the best value for money is Shimano, the low budget reels: The Shimano (Alivio) 2500 front Brake, or the one you find at K-mart/bigW. Got few of those, and even after much abuse, and storage, I take them out and they work a treat.

I also bougth a fishing combo (no name) for my son at some beach shop because a big nasty flathead pulled his other combo in the water (He dropped it -I guess -) and hat to realize that it just was not possible to hook any fish with that rod. It got replaced with a "cheap" shimano combo, and the count is now: RedRock cod, Flathead, undesrize JewFish (many), octopus (which we dropped).

Now he is happy and wants to come and fish every time we have some free time.

Get one of this babies: http://www.torpedo7.com.au/products/0ORE2NNSI/title/shimano-…
They are currently on special for $40

      • A toad fish, yes I agree !

  • Sounds pretty good.
