  • Does anyone got idea on how the signal strength is comparing to D-Link Wireless N 150 Router..

    I own a N150 router….I dont think it's signal is very strong….(1 antenna)
N300 will be better coz of the 2 antennas? if so…I am definitely buying one for $15. Bargain.

    • it won't run it, aussie version of the router seems to block the file upload.. I was given one of these about 12 months ago.

wifi has crap range, no wonder it is only worth $15.

      • +4

I bought one from HN when it was on sale for $22. Had no problems using DD-WRT. (Rev E4)

      • It does work as I've done it.

From memory I think you may need to hex edit the first file you flash to get it to match the existing firmware region. From then on future patching of DDWRT release works as normal.

        • any detailed procedure?thanks.

          ps. never mind.

        • Is yours from current batch or previous $22 one? What is the router version?

      • you just need to edit the last couple of digits in the file with a hex editor so that the router thinks the file is the aussie version. It's not a big deal but tbh I don't feel comfortable flashing unless I know it's 100% going to work. If the current firmware is working why change it?

        • At $15 I would "take the risk"!

      • Hence the "May run"…
Depending on the version, it should run fine according to the Wiki.

  • I've got a half dozen things requiring an Internet connection behind my tv and only one hard wired Ethernet port going to my router in another room, does anyone know if I can use this as a switch?

    • +1

Why not just buy a switch?
You can get one for around the same price anywhere and it will be guaranteed to do the job!

      • +1

+1 for a switch. Bought this http://www.msy.com.au/product.jsp?productId=2756 for $28 and now run my PS3, TV, Foxtel and Blu-Ray player through it

      • +4

Throw dd-wrt on it (as scubacoles said) and you've got yourself a switch and a wireless repeater. No cables and all the 'switch' benefits!

(Disclaimer: Last sentence not technically accurate. So what. Shoot me.)

        • aahhhh brave little solider!!!

        • +3

Have you actually tried using it as a wireless repeater? If not, don't assume just because it runs DD-WRT then it will simply work in the repeater bridge type modes. I notice that the revisions mentioned here all use the Atheros chipset. This chipset is notoriously difficult for getting repeater modes working. Yes, WDS works fine, but the WDS implementation only runs reliably when bridging two wired networks. If you want reliable repeater modes, then pay a bit more for a Broadcom based unit.

        • -2

I have an atheros based chip on a pci-e card. It offloads all the extra work off to the Computer CPU! and basically flat out refuses to work with Linux even though they claim support and threw together some dodgy drivers. ASUS PCE-N15… pretty much had to start using Windows again just to get a wifi network in house…

        • +1

That's really odd - should be an ath5k or 9k driver in *nix. What is the PID/VID in Device Manager or lspci -v in Linux?

    • Router will give you extra wireless coverage + act like a switch

  • Got one - Thanks OP

  • +1

pretty good price for a DD-wrt router

  • I bought this last year when HN had it at ~$22 for the E4 revision. Works fine. 2 antennas. Don't find myself needing to reboot it.

  • I can confirm the DIR-615 does run DD-WRT. It is significantly less reliable than a DIR-632 which says a lot about the quality. That said probably a good investment if you want to use it as a wireless bridge (how I'm using mine at present).

    • +1

Excuse my noob question, but how do you configure it as wireless bridge?

    • yes it does do dd-wrt. it all depends on ur rev version of the Dir-615

    • how did you manage that? is yours a non-au model?

      • It depends on the version.. it's highly unlikely that there is a specific au model.

  • +1

Note that the DIR-615 lacks gigabit ethernet

    • 10/100 ethernet ports

  • Can this made as a stand alone wireless access point?

    • Yes it seems to once you plug in the Internet/WAN.

    • I have a Belkin N300 as a main moden but can I use this to act as a access point to extend my wifi?

      • Should be no problems to make this a wireless range extender and for $15 it will be a bargain for many. We have a DIR-615 plugged into an ethernet network with a Linksys E4200 as the main router. There's a school of thought which says it's actually easier and less confusing to have different types of routers on the network.

This has been a solid router for us, never needs rebooting, fills in the wi-fi at one end of the house and you can plug an Ethernet cable in for wired access. Thoughput is good enough to play HD videos off an Apple TV in the next room with zero stuttering. As always with routers, your mileage may vary, wildly.

There are some configuration tricks. Here are the notes I kept when I set it up, pulled off forums etc:

        Primary (Linksys) router:
        • IP address 192.168.0.1
        • Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
        • DHCP server: enabled on this (Linksys) router (we have the DHCP IP address range set as 192.168.0.100 to 192.168.0.199, which leaves 192.168.0.2 free to be the DIR-615's IP address)

        D-Link DIR-615:
        • Plug the LAN side of the DIR-615 into your PC for configuration via CD and wizard.
        • Configure with unique name, DHCP off, new IP address (we use 192.168.0.2), same subnet mask as primary router, QoS off, SPI off, Guest Zone off, same SSID as primary router, same security and password settings.
        • Channel can be same or different to primary router.
        • Reboot.
        • Take the unit to its final location and plug in the ethernet cable from the wall into one of the LAN ports.

Do not plug in anything into the WAN port. Free LAN ports can be used for other devices.

        • +2

you didn't need to install the bloatware on your PC you could have just plugged in the ethernet and browsed to the router admin webpage and configured it yourself.

        • "Take the unit to its final location and plug in the ethernet cable from the wall into one of the LAN ports"

Ethernet cable from the wall??? I thought the point was to connect via wireless without requiring to connect to anthing except a powerpoint.

        • Thanks done it and it works great (Touch wood)

  • +1

I'd buy one but I don't want to be classed as a professional:)

  • +1

I had this and it was the worst router I have ever owned. Wi-Fi in particular is horrible.
Just pick your self up a second hand dual band router instead.

Also firmware has not been updated since 2009 or something like that.

oh quick edit with TPG use in pass through mode or it does not work at all.

  • bought 2

  • i have this, its sometimes rubbish, has issues resolving with the DNS but its signal strength is pretty good.

buy 2, rotate if one is down i guess.

    • You wouldn't be with dodo by any chance would you?
They have bad DNS servers which have timeouts that last ~20mins and they block 3rd party DNS servers. Of course results may vary but this happens to my brother in-law and I've found other people also have the exact same issue. He use to be with Bigpond and had no connectivity issues then switched to Dodo apparently according to dodo overnight his wiring became faulty seems conventient doesn't it?
      http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1238999

  • I use this router with the dd-wrt firmware. Followed the tutorial on their wiki to set it up. I had a bit of trouble with the hex editor part of the setup but I had found someone had uploaded a firmware ready to go on a forum (linked in their wiki).
I now use this as a wireless bridge. It hasnt let me down yet touch wood and for the price I think its a great buy. The speeds seem much the same as when plugged into my main router.

    • Where did you find the firmware? I can't find a link on the wiki.

  • Wow, even cheaper then last time

    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/79512

  • +1

its really crappy, wifi issues are consistent on all firmwares (dd-wrt and official). But for $15 bucks you get what you pay for i guess.

  • Cheers, needed something like this and grabbed 2 :)

  • I bought one. Bargain at this price.

  • +1

I just bought one. Ticket price is $139 haha but scans at $29 had to show them their own website.

    • +1

      $29?
      Should be $15

  • I bought two of these last time around and put openwrt on them.

Getting openwrt installed is a massive pain, but they've worked flawlessly since then. One is my primary router (running PPPOE) and the other I use as a simple AP.

    • +1

Similar to you only I install DD-WRT. I found installation relatively simple, upload the image via the webui updater and it worked immediately.

I bought one of these 12 months ago to provide a wireless bridge to my TV and Xbox (much cheaper than buying propriety adapters). Took total 30 mins to set up. Haven't had to touch in in these last 12 months and it's still doing its job perfectly!

I wouldn't recommend it for a primary router that is going to have heavy load due to low end specs, but great for purposes such as mine.

      • So it was that simple? On the Dlink firmware update page you simply uploaded DDWRT?

        • That was all I did for a netgear router.

  • Not for primary router, but makes a cheap switch/AP.

  • Would this be good to replace a Billion 7300G?

    • +1

The D-Link is about a year more recent and is a N router, which the Billion is not. I'm not sure you'd see much difference in practice, though.

  • Thanks got two from cottesloe. The hn staff couldn't believe it. We're going to get one themselves!

  • +1

grabbed one only because i'm an amateur

  • I will pass this chance to be 'A professional'

  • This is very cheap. Got a router already not sure if I should get one as a spare.

  • The local store which I chose to pickup from Has sold out of them and said all of the sydney region is sold out also so there giving me a different one that is some Cisco one cant remember the model no but I will be going to pick it up soon

    • Ended up getting a Cisco linksys E1200 is this better?

      • The Cisco is 18 months more recent, should have 50% better throughput that the DIR-615 and is generally well regarded as a cheap router. (As always with routers, your mileage may vary, wildly.) If you got one for $15 you've done very well.

        • Does this router also support DD-WRT?

      • Did you get it for just $15? I might try this with them if that's the case.

        • Yes got it for $15 :)

        • Blah, my Harvey Norman store is offering it to me for $38. Guess I'll stick with my current one for a while :(

  • +1

I just bought 2 units online.

  • I ordered last night from a store that had stock, now they're saying they have none left. Just great.

  • great deal..

i order one online for pickup in coburg is its sold out in lots of place.

does anyone know how long before they get an email to say its read to be picked up?

    • Most time ive used pickup option is usually within 2 days

    • I'm still waiting for my email after ordering (and paying by credit card) very early this morning. I was hoping to pick it before close of business today but it's now nearly 3pm so it's looking unlikely. A bit disappointed but I found that click and collect from Masters is a next day (not same day) service. What I hope they're NOT doing is selling out the store stock to walk ups and making online orders waiting on re-stock from interstate or <gasp!> overseas. If they do, this will be the last time I buy click-'n-clollect from HN — reason — very bad retail policy.

    • +1

I also ordered one from coburg yesterday and got an email to pickup this morning.

      • lucky you.. they left me out.. no stock and they refunding me apparently, but i havent got official letter or anything.

    • Never mind my earlier concerns, I got my "ready to pick up" message 16:30 yesterday afternoon and picked it up just before 18:00. That was from HN, Belmont, W.A. I was only at the counter a few minutes then on my way. So that's same day pick up, in this case.

Good work HN Online and crew at HN Belmont store.

It seems that HN may have a good 21st century business model here — do all the data entry / record keeping online then permit the buyer to pick up from somewhere nearby with minimal delay.

  • Seems its sold out in nsw entered a few different post codes snd keeps saying

Sorry for any inconvenience.Store pick-up is not available. However, it can be delivered to your address.

  • It is tempting to buy 3 of these and sell them on eBay however my morals get the better of me.

  • Got one. In checkout counter the chick peeled off the price tag that says '$139.95'.

  • Just got this email…
"We're experiencing a delay with your order. We estimate that your item(s) listed below will be ready in approximately 10 days, at which point we'll contact you."
Although I'm disappointed the thought of Jerry Harvey sheepishly going into Dick Smiths and having to pay RRP for a shit load of these routers to cover all the OzB orders cheers me up immeasurably
    :)

  • Ordered 2, got confirmation yesterday. Haven't heard back about it being ready to pickup and now when I try to check stock I see that it isn't available for pickup anymore.

    Not looking good…

    • update: got both of mine today no worries (seems they had to get one from another store)

the rrp on there was like $140!!! what the hell

  • Bought one (E4) and spent 4hrs trying to get Wireless Bridge working with DD-WRT without success :(

    • +1

Finally got Client Bridge working on an older E3 DD-WRT firmware. Happy Days!

      • Hi rooon. Any chance on providing the link to E3 DD-WRT firmware download? Thank you.

  • I chose pickup and got one today from a store. This was before the pickup option was removed. Must be sold out of them every where by now. The woman at the checkout seemed slightly shocked when she saw the $15 price. It's the E4 revision and have upgraded it to the 5.11 firmware. Bargain at the price.

I'd say it would probably be completely sold out online within a day.

  • Can't really go wrong at this price, I'll be using it as a wireless connection for my aged Xbox360 and always handy to have a spare in case my main Netgear box packs up.

  • Bought one, problem is it makes my Belkin router "bargain" I got a few weeks ago look like crap.

    :)

  • Got email

"We're experiencing a delay with your order. We estimate that your item(s) listed below will be ready in approximately 10 days, at which point we'll contact you.
    Items Backordered 2 x DIR-615OEM
Estimated Days Until in Stock 10
    "

Had selected to pickup from HN Broadway as they showed 'in stock' at time of ordering.

  • i havent receive my confirmation yet from HN so i called the store up and they said its out of stock and that I should be getting a call from Headoffice that they have refunded the $15 to my card.

    DAMn it

    • Well that may be but they are still selling from the web site.

Ordered mine Wednesday night, email this morning(Friday) in store to pickup.

      Model DIR615HN (Hardley Normal special edition ??????), H/W E4, F/W 5.10.

Nice sticker on box stating Not for Retail Sale. This product must be sold with computer hardware and peripherals

  • Got one, had DNS issues. Found in Setup>Networking>Enable DNS Relay. Untick that. No more problems.

    • I've had no DNS issues with mine. Although i did immediately upgrade it with the 5.11 firmware. If you haven't already done so i suggest you do the same.
