JB Hifi has it the cheapest so i took in a printout of the webpage and Good Guys matched it for me +20% (as per there policy), leaving a final price of $1380!! so they slashed $694 off there price (they were the most expensive though!)

These are really good TV's, they arent full HD but they look amazing in person

Sounds good. But how is $1380 20% less than $1496?

    • +1

GG price $2075 less JB price $1496. This amount less 20% gives $1380 from JB's $1496 as it's a price difference matching policy.

    • +1

As per Good Guys policy http://www.thegoodguys.com.au/portal/page/portal/tggwebporta…
they refund 120% of the difference in price.
So GG had it for $2075.
      JB was $1496.
Difference of $579 and 120% of that is $695.
So GG must now charge $2075 minus $695 or $1380.

  • +1

After doing some math; it's like this

    matching amount = [(GG price - JB price) / 100 ] * 20 = [(2075 - 1496) / 100] * 20 = 115.8

    Final price = JB price - matching amount = 1496 - 115.8 = 1380.2

    Complicated I know!

Edit: hehe someone beats me ;P

    On a 50" screen 1080p is desirable..

    • +1

Not really…1080p on a 50" is desirable only if you sit closer than about 2 m - see this chart:
      http://s3.carltonbale.com/resolution_chart.html

Sit at 3m, play some 1080p content on 2 50" screens (one HD and the other Full HD) and believe me, you will not be able to tell the difference.

On the other hand, if you want to use a PC (not talking video though), then yes, a 1080p panel would be a lot better. I run my HTPC in 1368 x 768 on my Panny HD plasma (1366 x 768) and it looks great. Running in 1920 x 1080 would obviously be better though.

      Great price on the panel.

      • +1

Hmm, interesting. I knew there was a limit, but thought for a 50" screen you would be close to or past the limit of detection at standard viewing distances..(ie around 10-15 feet).
Seems I was out by 10" of screen size!!

Is there a free wii with this also? Or some other kind of give away?

  • No free wii as that offer expired 26th 2008, the LG free LCD promotion has also ended 31st December 2008

good find….I bought the same one 1800 4 months ago

Great price, JB HiFi & Bing Lee were the cheapest with it advertised for $1496 and $1499 respectively. The TV itself is excellent and a bargain for a 50" Panasonic. Plethora of front and rear inputs.

If you don't live near a JB HiFi and GG won't match it (or if they pull some funny excuse like that), try getting them to beat Bing Lee's price too - on the front page of their stocktake catalogue - http://binglee.shoplocal.com/binglee/Default.aspx?action=ent…

  • +1

What's the policy generally when it comes to shipping and handling costs? Here where I live we have The Good Guys, but no JB or Bing Lee, so would the GG take into account the shipping and handling costs that would incur if I bought my tv from JB or BL?
I'm asking this because when I did a price matching on a monitor from Office Works, they included in the competitors price also the cost of the shipping. And then refused to give the 5% discount on that cost. In your experience or knowledge, is this the way it should work or did I get dodged?

  • +1

what store was it at because i called up two and they both wont do it @ that price

    • +1

They should as it's their policy.

EDIT: After reading the policy again, don't they only refund if you purchase it from the Good Guys then find it cheaper somewhere else?

      • +1

So, if you knew BEFORE buying from GG that there's a cheaper offer available, they don't have beat the price…?

        • +1

Yeah, that's I thought…but maybe if you try to pull that one on them, they just reduce their price so much that the difference is not worth refunding.

          Dunno, just speculating here.

But it seems the OP didn't buy it from GG first at their price then claim the difference.

OP (tg786) - can you confirm that?

  • +1

they said something about its below our cost and its too cheap

  • Dont let them fool you with the below cost remark, its in there policy to price beat it!

The girl took out a notepad and wrote dowm JB's price, she also asked if they could "hold onto my photocopy of the price unless u need it"

    • +1

what store did you get it from?

    From their website

30 Day Price Guarantee - WE GUARANTEE YOU THE LOWEST PRICE
    Before You Buy

In the unlikely event that you see a lower advertised price by any local competitor´s retail store, for any product we stock prior to purchasing from us, we will beat that price to maintain our Lowest Price policy.
    After You Buy

When you purchase, The Good Guys provide an exclusive 30 Day Price Guarantee. Should you discover a better advertised price for the same product by any local competitor´s retail store, simply bring in the competitor´s ad, plus your sales receipt within 30 days of purchase. We will cheerfully refund the difference plus another 20%.

Our 120% 30 day price guarantee applies on all newly boxed, currently available stock of the identical model, advertised by a local competitor.

Seems to me that if you show them the brochure before going through with the full price transaction, the best they are obliged to do is beat the competitor's price.
If you buy the unit at full price, then whip out the catalog, then they will give you the 120% thing

That's the way i read it anyway

    • +1

      Yep, I'd have to agree.

  • RE: Stix and the other guys

I presented the catalogue BEFORE purchase and they matched it + 20% however i have read what you guys said and your right they are supposed to give you the difference AFTER purchase.

This being said its still a good deal. You just have to buy it full price then go to the back of the line and whip out the catalogue 30 secs later!

    Sound about right?

  • +1

tg786 you must have got lucky, because they will only do it if JB hifi have it in stock. Fact is they are completely sold out and its a 3 week wait.

edit, what store was this at?

  • +1

Prior to that, I would call a store, check that they have them in stock and asked to hold one for me at least for half an hour. Otherwise you may get in to trouble, as they may sell all of them while you're purchasing it from GG.

i bought my 40" full hd (1080p) samsung lcd from harvey norman on sale for $1490 :)

saw it at dick smith for $1999

    • +1

Which series? I work for Dick Smith and we had them for $1399

  • +1

Oh and one more thing, buy these while you can - even at $1499 because when new stock arrives (and there's little no stock atm) they will be going up in price, approximately 9%. So if you can get one new in a box now for $1499, go go go!

Guys, just wanted to say I bought this TV before christmas at the then bargain price of $1530 (they were all >$1800 then) and I absolutely LOVE this Tv. I sit 3-4M from the screen so 1080P is USELESS to me, I use it with my HTPC and 1360x768 pc res is crisp and clear. There are connections for everything, its big, bright colours, just brilliant. You'd be crazy to buy a cheap brand plasma which this screen is in the low end price range now. Best thing I've bought myself in 2008 by far!
