Spotted this when I browsed B&H's offers this morning. It was USD $383 delivered less than 6 weeks ago, and it's now USD $319 + $33.46 postage = USD $352.46 (around AUD $340.30 according to Google). It has ridiculous RRP at $729, and cheapest according to staticICE is still AUD$415 not including postage.

It's a 7mm drive so should fit most laptops. It's also a new TLC-based drive from Samsung (rather than MLC on most other SSDs) so I guess some people might have problem with that.

I remember not even 6 months ago SSDs were struggling to break the $1/GB price…guess it was only a matter of time

Someone posted this in the comments of another deal a few days ago..

    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/92832

    And 840 isn't that great.. 830 better :)

    • +1

Semantics really, you'd never notice the difference in day to day usage.

      • +4

I thought it was never about day to day usage it was about the users being unsure of reliability.

        • I am fairly certain that the reliability issues where with the smaller ~120gb versions. The 240gb upwards reduces the deteriation by large amounts, something about there being more chips/denser or something….

Tomshardware article somewhere, they said these drives are great for general use.

Yeah we all know 830 is better. However I think in this case, Samsung 840 is "good enough" for many people at affordable price. 500+GB 830/840Pro are quite a bit more expensive.

I just want to state that I think this is a very solid deal. Good to see the prices are starting to drive downwards.

I see what you did there…

I refuse to believe a system can run 'silk smooth' without a SSD.

    • +3

Yeah, but this has a SSD, yours doesnt.

    • +1

And my 6990 is worth more than your entire rig, your point?

      • -2

And my hand built caselabs case is worth more then your 6990.

        • and my cardboard box is cheaper than your caselabs case

    • Your machine isn't doing anything. Silk is already smooth.

  • Could be good for my gf's iMac which can only take a single hard drive…

    • +1

If you don't need the built-in SuperDrive or care about warranty issues, you can mount another hard drive in its place using an optibay caddy.

SSD prices should plummet again, sales of NAND aren't doing so well.

    • Interesting, so would you recommend holding off for a bit and using a HDD in the meantime?
(Im currently doing a build and need a disk drive soon, but depending on how much I can save I'm willing to run off a HDD for a while)

    • +2

The prices should continue to fall, at least for higher capacity SSD's.

However smaller capacity drives seem to have hit the floor and I don't see any major price drops in the last few months.

    1tb for $499 would b a good deal

    • +1

no, 4TB for $199 would be a good deal.
so would be a brand-new Ferrari for $399.95.

I wish I could neg vote you again. Anyway, thanks OP. Went to their NYC store once, that place is a toy store for adults.

      • +2

Toy store for adults or adult toy store?

  • How does smartmigration work. Would i have to reinstall my os and software or could i swap out my laptop drive by duplicating it onto this one?
    Thanks

    • Yes you can image your existing to this without reinstall
Ghost or Acronis are commercial or just use Parted magic (free)

      • Just be sure whatever software you use is SSD-aware. Partition alignment is important for good performance.

  • hmmmm
