Global G-2 Chef's Knife Gift Set - $69. Free Shipping above $50 (Everten)

140
FREESHIP

Free shipping storewide on all orders above $50 (use coupon). Found this Global chef's knife among the deals.

I know there have been awesome knife set deals in the past, but I'm only after a chef's knife, utility knife and (nice-to-have) boning knife. Please share if you know of any other deals.

The G-2 knife seems to have good reviews, and lowest I've found online was around $75+.

Edit:
For those who prefer the knife set, the Global Synergy 7-pc knife block set is back in stock at Victoria's Basement for $299. http://www.victoriasbasement.com.au/Product_Detail.aspx?Prod…

Old deal is here: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/88765

It's probably not something I'd buy for myself, and people are going to argue that global knives are overpriced and that you should get something else (which is true I suppose) but it makes for a very nice present. Especially since most people do know of global AND global knives looks very nice (although maybe not the most ergonomic) AND it comes in a really nice wooden case with magnetic lock.
For $69 it makes for a very fancy and useful present (most people have shit for knives) which would be hard to beat in that price range. It might not be the absolute best knife in the world but it's still pretty good, and probably better than what 99% of the population uses.

EDIT: should mention that I bought this exact item as a present last year and the case is much nicer than I expected.

Beware Asian custom of giving knives as pressies

Globals are only overpriced in the sense that you can get a Victorinox off Ebay that's almost as good for less than half the price. I have a couple of small Globals I took from my parents place, they're probably 15 years old and they still sharpen up well. I use a 10" Victorinox as my main knife ($25US pre-shipping on Ebay) but I wouldn't discourage anyone from buying a nice big Global for $70.

      Also:

    • Did you receive 6 negative votes for your comment because you neg voted this deal? Do some research on brands..

      • Nah, he didn't neg the deal. And judging from his comment below, he (?) just seems to favour Wusthof and Victorinox. Nothing wrong about that, imo.

      • He stated an opinion that can't possibly offend any reasonable person. Why all the negs?

        • I imagine people negged it for being pretty much irrelevant, or read it as being an unfair criticism of the brand. For the record, I have not voted on the comment.

    • Global aren't cheaply built. There are a few other brands like Wusthof which are costlier (I like them to a certain extent), but Anthony Bourdain does recommend Global (for many reasons if you read Kitchen Confidential).

I have to admit, global is a great brand and for what its worth, I think the European brands are over priced, not global.

I think this is a great price especially for the box too, nearly paid 90 for a smaller global at Westfield without the box. That was Before I found the DJ's deal and posted it just before Xmas . Enjoy the knife really make cooking that bit easier.

I personally don't like the handle on globals, just can't seem to get a comfortable grip on it. The steel of the blade has always seemed cheap to me as well (similar to mundial). I would personally take victorinox or wusthof over global 100% of the time.

    • I agree. I have a set of Wusthof and Victorinox at home. They are just great.

    • Globals have better (harder) steel than victorinox and likely the same or sililar to wushthof.

Cutting potatoes with this knife is possible the most fun you can have in the kitchen.

  • Thanks all for your comments. Have finally decided to buy it. I've never owned a nice knife before (unless you count those Victorinox pocket knives? Haha). Hope it's worth the money.

Get yourself a steel, treat it nice, it will last a lifetime.
Keep it out of the dishwasher…

      • Thanks! Hardly use the dishwasher these days. (And I was just thinking when I'd need a sharpener too!)

Nice. I just found this deal on a Global block set and tried to submit it but apparently these guys are banned on OzBargain for some reason: http://www.kitchenwaredirect.com.au/Knives/Knife-Block-Set/G…

Good price and looks legit to me but I suppose there must be a reason they're banned so please tread carefully. It's painful that you only find out that someone's banned after spending 10-20 minutes writing up the deal submission inc. doing further research to get all the facts etc. Could that be fixed Mods? This is the 2nd rejected deal I've tried to post in as many weeks.

    • Hey it's $299 too (same price as Victoria's Basement)! But they've got free shipping so I guess that's the better deal. I was looking at that site too but I didn't know they were banned. Have never bought from them before…

    • I've bought from them once before, they were great. WA based i believe. Ordered Friday afternoon arrived Monday morning. I was really happy with their service.

  • They are one of the few places to buy Icel Zanger in Oz - fantastic portugese steel knives at amazing prices, imo as good as wustof or mundial, and they have some of the best prices round on just about everything they stock

  • I've owned this knife for 13 years.. beautiful thing to behold :) Incredibly sharp if you maintain it with a stone and the balance feels perfect. I've since bought another Global block set but find I almost always use the main 20cm knife anyway so it was fairly pointless.

  • this jap knifes are angled differently. need to sharpen using the correct sharpener. the global sharperner cost around $50.

    • I use the global 200/1000 combo wet-stone. I have the $50 sharpener too… not bad for regular quick sharpens but after a while they need a proper sharpen with the stone.

  • Great knives, bit harder to sharpen than most other kitchen knives but if you keep them dry after you've washed them they'll outlast you. Buy a whetstone and learn to use it (about 10 bucks in many asian food markets)..

  • So just tried to purchase this and i keep getting a popup saying "Please select a shipping method before submitting the order." despite having applied the free shipping code and Shipping Method is thus listed as "Free shipping" :-(
