      • Good thing they are completely different points then hey ;)

not same same, it different. Both you can have.

    • The whole Smeg kit, as well as the tumblers done in NZ are being sold directly from the Chinese factory contracted to make them. Seems like there's an excess supply Coles don't want.

the coles ones are complete trash. They are made from terrible quality steel. it doesnt hold an edge, and they get rust spots after a couple uses. Even the previous Master Chef knives they did were way better than the smeg crap.

        Surprise surprise lmao

        • I mean the only reason im surprised is that the last knife promotion they did with the master chef branded knives were significantly better.

@DanielP2: Those Masterchef knives were great! Still using mine today
Smeg is pretty much a “fashion” brand of kitchen goods these days hence me not being surprised these knives are bush league

      • agree, the vegetable knife isn’t cutting anywhere as well as it did the first few uses and feels as blunt as my old knives

perfect back-to-school gift for Qld kids.

The steel and knife profile on global knives is ok, not great, and the handle isn't very comfortable.
I recommend a Fujitora/Tojiro VG10 for similar price on Amazon.

    • Get a Victorinox Fibrox. Better in the hand and can take more abuse.

  • Good entry level Japanese knife. I'm not a big fan, but my wife loves using this because she said it's light and sharp (edge retention is quite good when I run it through a whetstone).

Blink three times if you are being held against your will to write such wonderful things about wife and knife.

      • TLDR …
        Sharp knife
        Satisfied wife
        Retain life

        Got it

The knife "experts" love to hate and some cooks love to bits (the G-2 was late Anthony Bourdain's favourite knife). I've got one and still occasionally use one as a beater for twenty odd years cutting sketchy stuff my fancy knives can't go near. I'm quite familiar with this number.

I reckon what makes it so polarising is grip comfort. The balance point is on the slightly behind the "bolster", yet there's no bolster. Instead it's tapered and there's a notch for comfort. So the knife practically disappears in a pinch grip. Hammer/baton grip otoh would just be a chore.

Ps. Steel etc. don't really matter at this level. Yoshikin(Global) and Tojiro are Tsubame-Sanjo mobs; it's quality either way. Please don't lump global with crap just because it's a household name. Bunmei had convinced people to use stainless before the went global, no small feat in Japan….
