I actually my Global knife set today from Victorias Basement, big ad in the Weekend Australian.

    http://www.victoriasbasement.com.au/Product_Detail.aspx?ParC…

They have this set (Synergy) plus also Ikasu and Millenium, including a 2 wheel minisharp for $309. I think the Ikasu is much better looking as well.

I actually my Global knife set today

did you actually the whole thing? ;) http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/i-accidentally

I think the Ikasu is much better looking as well.

indeed, i got the ikasu. much prefer the bamboo over the metal blocks. plus i liked the way it hangs the knives.

    • Thanks for this, ordered some from Victoria's Basement as I missed out on the David Jones deal

  • Aww Expensive sharpener

    • +1

Not really. Don't have to go to the shops before Christmas. Actually get the Ikasu which I wanted, and don't have to worry about stock. Wanted the sharpener as well. I see myself at about $30 down, if i had actually been happy with the Synergy.

  • So Sydney Pitt St David Jones has them for that price? No need to price match?

  • Ye that's right and if u want sharpener their $20 in same purchase

  • +1

Been using the Millennium set for the past two years, great set of knives - highly recommended. Be careful though, they cut through your nails very easily as we have found out from experience… Sharpener is great and easy to use too.

  • +7

Great price for such an awesome set of knives.

MYER's price match policy is BS, how can they get away with wording like that. It's not like we the average consumer can validate what their cost price is.

    • I get a lecture from the Staff at DJs every time I get them to price match at a substantial discount. Not my fault they don't negotiate decent prices with their suppliers. With the exception of the Computer/TV/DVD/Games section of DJs Bondi where they couldn't have been helpful enough & even looked up the best prices for us on their display Mac :) Despite that, they have never refused a price match at any DJs store… even at 65% off their marked price.

    • +1

I promise, $240 is NOT below their cost price.

      Get your facts right!

      It says made in Japan!

    • YOU GET WHAT YOU PAID FOR.
Open you eyes before you speak.

  • Is it just me or does it say $399 now?

MY BAD: helps to read the description.

    wüsthof is better/value - http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/88602 :)

  • i have this same set and been using it for 4yrs now i think, great knives, still so sharp after all this time.

    • You dont sharpen them? I have had this set for many years (perhaps 8) and while i think they are great I have to sharpen them quite often… or perhaps I just like insanely sharp knives…

They are very nice and for that price I would buy them again in a second.

If anyone wants DJ gift cards, I'm selling them at 10% off. I've got $1500 worth of DJ cards (been collecting them to buy a TV at DJ but I bought a Tv yesterday at JB Hifi)
I'm in Sydney. If interested, PM me.

    • try Cardlimbo.com.au

Just to let you know, it's total BS, Myer saying it was below cost. I got a set of Scanpan knives - lifetime guarantee, all the gubbings for cost plus 10% - came to around $38/$48 I believe.

(Special work-related catalogue given out once a year which isn't given out to the public)

  • +2

Was 699? I bought this exact set from king of knifes for $350 almost 5 years ago. :S

    • it used to be $399 RRP then the distributor raised the price.

  • +2

If you're thinking of trying the Melbourne City store don't bother, they don't have any in stock. As I was asking the staff another OZBer was on the phone trying to find if they have any.

    • +1

I'll take yer word on this, thanks for posting.

It's a lie, He's just making sure we don't get there first, so that he can Broden the lot. :P

Would be great if someone can post the invoice here.

Chatswood DJ store claim that $399.00 is already after Tue 40% discount.

  • +1

Posted invoice for you, note I ended up buying two , city store had 17 yesterday minus my two lol

  • +2

Doncaster, Chadstone, and Glen Waverley sold out.

  • Thx, bought mine from Castle Hills without showing them the invoice.

there's one left on display in castle hills. Chatswood stores has nothing on display, but if u ask the staffs, they'll be able to get some in the back.

    • Went to Chatswood this afternoon was told that the item is already discounted to 399 so no further discount.

  • Got the ikasu for $250 this year from a knife shop when it was on special. Ikasu looks alot better :)
But this is a great price.

  • +8

A good price, but I just wanted to point out that these sets are usually $299 in all the online stores. If you pay more than that, you are getting ripped off. They are also on regular sales at myer etc for $299 every couple of months. That said, you rarely ever see them BELOW this price. So yes, a good price for sure, but before you guys go crazy and buy 5 sets, just keep in mind that it is a saving of $60 and not $460.

    • +2

      Where are these $299 online?

Usually about $350 but certainly not $299, let alone $240!

      • +1

Agree, have been looking for this set for months but price range usually 350-399. Never seen $299 as a normal price.

      • +1

Regularly $299 at victorias basement and petersofkensington for example, and I've seen the same price at many other stores too. $399 now that I check, but in a week or so they'll be $299 again. I've also seen the Ikasu set in my local myer store for $299 (on a regular basis) and at brisbane dfo also for $299. But again, never seen it as low as $239, so definitely a good bargain.

EDIT: to the poster above whom has been looking for months, I bought a knife from petersofkensington a month or two ago, at which point the set was $299 again. I was going to buy it a year or so ago, and I still really like the (ikasu) set, so out of habit I tend to check the price of this set when I see it. But maybe I should have phrased it differently. Most online stores charge 350-400 for their regular price (even though it always says down fro $700 or something), but they also regularly have it on special for the lower price. I'd be very surprised if you could not find it for $299 from some store at pretty much any point in time.

EDIT: forgot about http://www.yourhomedepot.com.au, they often have good prices. They currently have a Global set (5 piece though, not 7 piece, so you lose two of the smaller knives) for $239 for example. Anyway, you get my point :) Good luck to everyone trying to get this set from DJs, good bargain.

Rang up DJs to reserve 2 sets at 10am.

DJs just called me and said its a pricing error and should be $399 so they cant sell to me for $240

    Order cancelled

      Do you feel cut?

      • Steptoe
        Do you feel cut?

DJ's really seems to have dropped the ball and butchered this deal

if they are going to slash prices they should be checking its the correct price before advertising it

really need to be sharpener if they are going to save the goodwill that sales items are meant to generate…

        • Exactly where was it advertised for $239?? It's been a cashiers pricing error the whole time!

    • Just show them the invoice and ask them to price match. I can upload mine if it helps.

    • -1

How is it a pricing error?

It's advertised. I just bought a set and I also saw plenty of other sets behind the counter on hold for others.

    • I had a discussion with the manager at DJ's in Bris. This technically is a pricing error as their current promotion is just 40% off purchases over $50 for the knives. The scanned price of $399 already has the 40% discount applied to it (down from $699). So to get to $239 you have to mark an addition 40% off again, so basically you are asking them to double discount on this item! Having said that they did agree to do it after some bargaining but don't necessarily expect it to be automatically marked down to that price…

      • Sorry but $699 less 40% = $420.

Therefore $399 can't be the 40% off price.

  • I bought 1 whittemens knife from woolworths for $48 & thought that was expensive. But $699 rrp? Where do they come up with such big numbers?

    • +2

$699 is a ridiculous price, but you do get what you pay for..

The $48 "whittemens" (maybe you meant Wiltshire) knives won't be anywhere near as sharp or as good quality as the Made in Japan Global or Made in Germany Wüsthof.

I find that Japanese knives are a little more high maintenance because of the thinner blade, but are super sharp. German knives are sharp, but also very durable due to the thicker blades.. Just something to keep in mind when choosing..

    • hahaha

I bought 1 whittemens knife from woolworths for $48 & thought that was expensive.

that like saying you drive a 1978 holden commodore and dont understand how a brand new ferrari can possibly be worth any more than your old commo.

  • Thanks 111189. Just bought a set from DJ Southland VIC. Also bought a MinoSharp 2 wheel sharpner, but that wasn't much of a bargain at all, I paid $36, but online it's only $24..

  • Just picked up the last one from Canberra city. Had one of those great ozb moments where they initially quoted 699, I asked for 240. They take me to a side register whilst other customers look at me. Almost without a fight they go "ok". My brother is astounded at what just occurred and I'm going to have a very happy girlfriend come Christmas day. +1

  • +1

Ahh awesome story glad everyone got into this so fast! Merry Xmas ozbargainer's!

  • Last 2 at Chaddy just sold for $399

  • Thanks 111189! I first dealt with a traveller from DJs Market st who was extremely lazy and upon request to scan the item he was adamant it was $399 no further discount. Upon further query with another sales assistant, I was advised that whatever price that is scanned is subsequently manually reduced by 40% provided it formed part of the "40% off kitchenware etc etc for purchases over $50". I then got her to process my sale and it was indeed the $239 mentioned here.

  • Thanks to the OP - got the last one at Southland. Great knives, great price. Sorry for those that missed out. Hopefully Boxing Day sale will be similar price.

  • DJ Melb CBD have stock. Bought one at 1.30pm. Thanks OP

    • Really? I was there at 9am and they definitely didn't have any stock.

  • DJ Burwood Sold out.

  • Dont waste your time for Garbo and Perth city. Both stores insisted 399 is after discount. Even had a 5 min "talk" with the Garbo cashier in person and still no luck. Apparently they already had plenty of calls since morning querying about the price.

Lucky those who managed to wing it!

    • Show them the invoice and ask them to price match instead of arguing whether the 40% discount has applied.

    • I just bought the last one at Garden City. Cashier accepted it was a mistake but still gave it to me

      • You reckon you can post your receipt? I showed the OP's receipt but got cut off saying it was an eastern state receipt and one which was priced incorrectly.

        • Your wish is my command - http://i45.tinypic.com/17s7qs.jpg
Let me know if this sorts out those tricky customer service folk!

        • Nah no luck. Cockwit manager whine saying (a) no more stock, (b) he cant keep an eye on mistakes each salesperson does (in short tough luck).

No apology offered, basically got told to move on.

          Doh!

  • I winged mine at Hornsby

Same, had to spend some time explaining

But nevertheless I'm a happy man

  • Just picked up mine from Southland. Girl was very nice and helpful. She knew the price and put it through straight away.

made penang curry with my new knife

cutting the beef was silky smooth, it was like cutting sashimi!

  • Doncaster wouldn't match the $240 price, the manager said it was an error so they couldn't do it:(. It scanned at $399 on the machine so they would need to take an extra 40% off the "already reduced" price to do that.

  • Both Chatswood and CBD have stocks, but they advised they can not match the other store's price due to the other store were selling them at error price, manager advised 40% discount can NOT be used in conjunction with other offer (per their sale sign), hence no luck for us! Lame… I guess it depends on individual sales and branch! sigh…

  • Anyone know if this Wusthof set is better or just different?
    http://www.catchoftheday.com.au/smallfish_info.php?event_id=…

    • global uses better steel but have thinner blades which basically means globals are lighter and will get a sharper, both should last about the same between sharpenings

personally i like the one piece stainless handles of global rather than 2 piece knives with plastic handles which can crack and fall apart like my old knives did

    • i've been neg'd for saying it's better
      http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/88765#comment-1167664

it might be just different but most people would prefer wusthof especially if they actually handled them before buying

lighter is not necessarily better - weight can give better performance/control

better steel is also debatable - forged/wusthof is generally better than stamped/global

the plastic handles of my decade-old wusthof knives have never cracked
