  • postive from me as well.. $50 for the inconvenience of clicking refresh for the last few days is time well spent :)

  • +2

Damn! Oh well, it was nice hoping. I wonder if these idiots who called them brought it to their attention?

    • Probably was always going to be hard to avoid someone calling when this was posted to such a public place and so many people clicked through. From personal experience, many pricing errors from biggish retailers don't get noticed if there are only one or a few people taking advantage and not hundreds like here.

(No complaints from me about the OP posting it though; I would never have known about this otherwise and it was always worth a shot!)

  • except that guy will be waiting for his 14k for a while now….

    • Hope he has interest free period, as I'm sure a $50 greys voucher won't be enough compensation to tie up $14k for 3 weeks..

      • 50 shades of grey?

      • Well you have to consider being the kind of person who has $14k that he can drop on lenses at a moment's notice…

        • That dude is 23 and still at uni according to one of his online profiles. He probably used his parent's credit card.

  • Protest!!

  • -6

Call me perverted, but I'm kind of happy actually. The thought that I missed out on an opportunity to grab a $2000 lens for one tenth the price is just too painful to bear.

  • I'm glad Paypal doesn't charge withdrawal fees anymore.

    • If money you paid via PayPal went off the Credit Card they would be refunded into credit card as well.

  • maybe a bit off topic, do we still get credit card points if grey issue the refund?

  • With $50 finally I can purchase something other than Sony CDs and DVDs from Grays Online.

    • Thats assuming its a $50 no strings attached voucher. I'm not getting my hopes up as I think it could be something as useless as requiring a minimum spend of $500!

      • +1

Nah.. I have a feeling that they won't.. It's bad enough that they put people out with cheap lenses, but it'd be like waving a red flag to a lot of angry bulls if there's some bullshot conditions..

Think they're probably just happy to get out of jail, without buying the farm.. lol

      • A minimum spend of $500 would result in a pretty big outcry here, I think.

  • I got the email too. No! Nooooo~!

Anyone have any idea about the legalities of what they did? I mean disclaimers don't trump statutes normally. Our money was taken after all. There was an offer made by Grays and definitely acceptance by conduct at least. Commercial lawyers please stand up!

    • They also issued tax invoices (for most of us) indicating that the orders had been paid in full with the statement "TITLE TO THIS INVOICE DOES NOT PASS UNTIL PAID FOR IN FULL".

That said, I don't have any desire to pursue this further, and I'm not one to begrudge them for cancelling. (Unless they stuff us around with the refunds or the vouchers!) :)

      • +1

I'm confused though, they obviously mean title to the invoice but what about title to the goods? Unless of course an invoice is the only way a person can prove they have a right to receive goods they've paid for.

Gee since you've paid in full (not like they let you pay partially anyway), aren't you the rightful owner of what you've ordered?

Anyway I hope all of us get our lenses, credit card details were taken, personal identification details were taken (names, addresses, phone numbers). At the very least this is data mining, at worst it's illegal temporary fundraising like some other ozbargainers suggested.

  • I wonder if they'll honour my G15 at $290 odd… It was only about $50 cheaper than other retailers…

  • ""We are currently identifying the transactions affected and if you are identified as having ordered goods at the incorrect price we will be in further contact with you""

let hope my order goes through.. dreaming…maybe

  • $50 voucher and already posted……..

    • nothing for me.

    • +1

Whats posted? The lens or the voucher?

  • +1

Anyone had a look to see if anything is worth the purchase with $50 off??

  • 50 bucks is pretty good for sitting around sooking on the internet - though I'd like that money back in my account fairly soon. I might email them and see if they wanna do me a x-pro1 for 850 bucks. No harm in trying.

  • Bugger! worth a shot :(

  • It's a bit disappointing that a respectable website like Grays allowed something like this to happen. At least the $50 voucher proves that they value their reputation unlike bottom feeders like Harvey Norman who happily blur the line between scamming and stupidity before blaming their customers.

    • -2

      Nice try PR guy!

  • So how will they refund us? by credit card - the same way we paid?

    • I imagine it'll be whatever method you paid. Probably easiest for them and the buyer. Chasing up alternative payment methods will delay the process and likely upset customers who are now out a few thousand dollars in some cases.

  • I'm wondering how this error occurred? Surely it can't be a random price as it represented roughly proportionate discounts. So I'm wondering if the price displayed was their profit margin?

    • What interests me is they sold out three times in that period. Once sure, but then to have the stock become available again a few hours later and another time on Monday evening seems very daft and mildly suspicious to me. Something other than a pricing error must have been going on. If the stock had been listed and sold out once sure, but having it reappear suggests there were other inventory issues.

Not that we'll ever find out…but it is curious none the less.

      • From what I saw, when you added stock to your cart it removed it from the available to buy list. I imagine what happened is that people's carts take a few hours to expire, hence the new stock appeared.

Given the cheap items which had really high pricing, I thought it might be just a case of the prices being shuffled with the descriptions (maybe someone didn't sort all the columns in excel lol)

I got the email about the pricing error yesterday but nothing more about my transaction being cancelled. No refund yet either. I guess it is just a matter of time (although I can still dream)

        • The columns not lining up would at least account for those few $900 SD cards.

        • Timeouts wouldn't explain the stock becoming available again Monday evening however. I can't imagine they'd cancel an order for failure to pay after only one business day either.

    • 25% on a $1500 item? Something tells me no.

  • Are there no recourse for the buyer? Given the general acceptance by most here I am wondering if there is some disclaimer or law that allows them to rescind the contract.

  • Thanks Ozbargain, hopped on this bargain train, slept for a bit and woke up with $50.. <3

    • u already receive ur vouchure?

  • I just got an email - not sure which order this relates to though:

    Dear xxxx

This email is to let you know that your refund relating to case CAS-xxxxxx-xxxxx has been approved.

Your refund will be paid within 2 business days directly on to the credit card you used to purchase the goods. Depending on which financial institution you use, there may be a delay before you are able to see this refund on your statement.

    • When did you order on Grays? Maybe you can check your order history whether the order has now been refunded.

      • I just got another one - the two that have been notified so far were ones I bought Friday afternoon as soon as the deal was released. One order was the 35/1.4 and 50/1.2, the other was a 50/1.4.

I also placed orders later int he night when stock opened up again - they were a 7D+18-135 kit, and a 100/2.8 Macro (non-L) - no word on these yet.

No sign of any refunds or cancellations in the 'my grays' - but then again I have old separate purchases which were refunded for different reasons and they show as normal too.

The reason I can tell… is it turns out I have two grays accounts (one old one I had forgotten about) - one was logged in on my desktop and one on my phone. The 2 refunds are on the orders I placed on my computer in the afternoon.

  • Anyone that bought the X Pro 1 body yesterday, have you received any emails from greys yet? Mine still shows that I bought it, but haven't received any further correspondence from them.. I wonder if this is actually going to go through?

    • I bought it on Friday night, though at the same price as yesterday. I received an e-mail from Grays yesterday afternoon. I should think they will be included in the "incorrect pricing" caseload.

  • just me or there's no longer any canon lens products on grays? (could be just me? - i did search for brand canon & in photo stuff)

this is all I can find?
    http://www.graysonline.com/lot/0003-3114334/computers-and-it…

    • Their search page does not show out of stock products. If you click on one of the direct links to the lenses in this thread, you'll find that they're still there, but with corrected prices and all out of stock.

      • ok thanks :) I can't even see the any lenses at all though, and it wasn't all of them that were incorrectly priced/out of stock before? Seems like they've just removed the whole lot.

  • Hmmm. I spent 2 days solid working out which lenses to buy to supplement the ones I bought from grays - plus which camera to marry them to. I think I'll thanks them for the offer of the vouchers, but take the lenses thanks very much

    • +2

Let us know how that turns out for you.

    • +3

Did you really expect them to honor such obviously-mispriced lenses?

  • -3

I spoke to the ACCC today about this, as I believe that it's one thing to incorrectly price one item, then rectify it within 24 hours, and refund; versus listing multiple items over 3 days, then rectify the problem, and refund. I was curious to know their opinion on what happened here.

The ACCC cannot act on specific orders, but if they receive enough complaints about a business can investigate and possibly take action. So, if you feel that they have done the wrong thing here please go to http://www.accc.gov.au/content/index.phtml/itemId/717452/fro… and fill in the form at the bottom of the page. This is more effective than ringing them.

If you wish to act on your own specific order you may wish to talk to Consumer Affairs / Fair Trading in your state for further advice. I have numbers for 2 states handy - in NSW they are on 13 32 20 and VIC they are on 1300 558 181. However the information I received was that since the retailer offered a refund there's nothing they can do.

Short summary: Online retailers can sell items at whatever price they like to lure you in, take your money, then (hopefully) refund. All legal!

    • +13

      Seriously, move on mate.

    • +11

      Wait… what!?

Dude, it was a pricing error. That was obvious to everyone. Taking advantage of an obvious mistake was fair enough (if not a little morally dubious). However to think you have some kind of right to force them to sell you something for far less than it is worth is just crazy.

I really don't understand people and this crazy sense of entitlement they have… I mean FFS, they even gave you $50 voucher for free.

      • -7

Why should businesses be allowed to make mistakes without bearing the consequences?

        • +2

The consequence is they upset their customers and get a bad rep, possibly losing customers. We'll be getting $50 vouchers so they're paying for their mistakes anyway. (Hopefully no min spend with voucher)

I think they're doing a much better job at rectifying than other retailers.

        • So are you telling me that if you got caught for speeding, you wouldn't ask for some leniency?

Even the police give you a freebie every 2 years.

  • Just got an email saying my order has been refunded - 650d 18-135 kit. :/

    • Fingers cross they let some through! Now I'm obsess about getting a 70-200 sigma… I blame gray for putting that in my head…

  • +4

I think it's a genuine mistake, and they are acting in good faith by refunding people. I'm in no mind to complain to the ACCC about it I don't think. Yes the prices were somewhat misleading, but not intentionally so. I find it odd that people are coming out of this saga with such a sense of entitlement, given that it was quite clear from the get-go that the prices were incorrect.

    • +1

Hear hear, we all knew it was going to be a long shot/ramble at that price. I'm happy with their response and the time it took them to react being over the long weekend and all.

  • -2

I'm just wondering did the original poster of this thread get the gear he ordered?

Generally speaking, you should have waited till you got your order before posting here. Because a sudden fluctuation of orders for the same products will definitely raise suspicions on the product for sale, hence they'll pick up the pricing error and correct the mistakes.

You might have gotten away with it if you kept quiet about it until you got your lens first hahaha

  • I now have credit advices for these two orders - which confirm that it was the 35/1.4, 50/1.2 & 50/1.4 paid with my CBA Amex.

    http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/1568/creditadvice.png

No word yet on my other two orders (paid with PayPal)

  • I am going to let this slide as I knew I was 'trying it on' when I bought a lens.

However I can understand the frustrations of some buyers.

Simply offering a refund shouldn't really make it all go away.

If you bought something off eBay (auction or Buy now) and the seller turned around and said sorry no longer selling here's your money back, most people would howl for blood.

If people here bought $20 Eneloop Glitter packs from Dick Smith, only for them to offer a refund, I'd doubt people would be so generous.

The fact that is was a pricing error is a side issue. The main issue being a contract was completed with agreement and consideration.

Again…I'm not worried, I doubt I will even use the $50 voucher as I am sure it will come with unfavourable T/C's.

    • I doubt I will even use the $50 voucher as I am sure it will come with unfavourable T/C's.

I'll take the voucher off you if you are not using it.

        Pirahnas….they're not just in movies.

        • I know it hurts now, but the pain will ease eventually and you'll move on, chin up mate!

    • Nothing related to this sale but for fun I actually want to ask them what happens when I buy something and then turn around and say sorry price mistake; I didnt want to pay that high or low.

      • Pretty sure they would just say "OK" and cancel your order?

        • hahaha.. hardly ;)

        • I cancel orders from online retailers all the time. Amazon even has a dedicated button for it. If it hasn't been posted I have never had issues canceling orders.

Please tell me what retailer you have used that has refused to cancel an order you have placed?

        • Megabuy…

I tried to cancel an order which hadn't be 'processed' let alone dispatched, and was charged a 20% restocking fee.. $1200 worth of monitors..

        • Megabuy… LOL

          Grays is not Megabuy.

    • It's unrestricted, but expires in 2 weeks.

    • And that contract also had associated terms and conditions. You should read them.

    • I wouldn't be too fussed, however if they can't guarantee they won't make mistakes like this, which clearly they can't, then they should charge the credit card when the items are ready to be shipped. It is bad for the consumer to have the money taken off their hands and for them to then review whats happened over the weekend. That or they should be in a position to refund the moment a mistake is picked up (Tuesday).

      • It's the banks that are the issue, not the merchant.

  • +1

I sometimes buy things from GrayOnline through auction or buy now. so far, never had any issues.
This case I see the price was unbelievable and Gray sometimes sells the things with amazing price too., so I ordered and rejected in a way.

I have same experience with TopBuy which I have bought cameras and once there was cancelled without any explanation(the model was 200-300 cheaper than retail). at the end, they came up with 'product damaged' or some bullshit. there wasn't such a nice gestures to compensate so I am no longer use them.

With Gray, at least they come up with $50 voucher, sounds pretty reasonable to me. otherwise with honoring the deal, either Gray or pity Asian supplier will get severely damaged.

At bottom line, I believe no OzBagainer wants to take a profit from some one's mistake. Rather than that, we genuinely look for a deal with giving alert to local mark-up businesses.

    • I believe no OzBagainer wants to take a profit from some one's mistake. Rather than that, we genuinely look for a deal with giving alert to local mark-up businesses.

If this is what you believe, I think you are not living in the real world.

  • I made 8 orders. I received an email for 5 orders stating I would get a refund. I have only received a refund for 1 of the orders. My money is still gone.

    • Yes it's funny that, balance was automatically deducted within 48 hours but refunds will take 4 weeks.

  • +3

Grays response to this whole issue is $50 more than what I expected. Compared to other similar events, I must say I'm impressed. Cheers to them.

    • +1

Compared to Dell who honoured their pricing error ($8 hard drives) and actually shipped the drives to people who bought them?

      • +2

There's a lot more leeway to do things like that when you're raking in US$63 billion a year.

      • +1

Only to some people. Not everyone.I ordered 4 to put into my nas and they didn't send me any.

      • What about Dell and their cheap desktop PCs (pricing error). They didn't honour them and that news made some headlines in newspapers. Ozbargain was also mentioned in them

        • while we are on the subject of dell, how awesome did dell swarm used to be?

    • I think it is very presumptuous to think that it will be just $50 credit with no conditions.

      • +2

Don't you think you're a little presumptuous to think that we have not already got our voucher?

We are writing to you in regards to a recent transaction on GraysOnline. Unfortunately due to a processing error some of our products on GraysOnline were shown onsite at an incorrect price. This included goods that you purchased. The refund of the incorrect price will appear on your credit card statement within 3 to 5 working days.

Please accept our sincere apologies for the error and any inconvenience it has caused. By way of an apology we have issued you with a $50 voucher to spend on your next purchase at GraysOnline or GraysOutlet and the voucher code to use is XXXXXXXXXX with expiry date 14.2.13.

GraysOnline appreciate your support and hope you continue to shop with us in the future.

        • +2

^ I got mine today as well. Doesn't seem like there are any conditions besides the 2 week expiry date.

  • +1

Now we wait for an ozbargainer to find out a clever way of using the $50 voucher :)

  • Looks like they have relisted all the items again. But at their correct price. Might use the $50 voucher to help pay for a battery grip

    • +3

Did you not read ANY of the comments? The very first post brought up the notion that it was a mistake.
You chose to waste your time. Surely it was common sense that such massive discounts usually means an error.

Maybe they should be fined proportionately to encourage them to perfect their bloody pricing mechanism. What a farce.

      E&OE

      • -3

I'm talking about the man hours wasted for everyone here ordering, writing, checking refunds have gone through etc. not in trying get them to send me the lens. I knew that was pissing in the wind, but I wanted to make a point :)

Why do you feel the need to defend their shambolic organisation?
