  • Just got one from Harvey Norman Auburn. They still had plenty available… and were selling it for $1 cheaper at $197.

  • how do these compare to the tomtom one v4's?
    cheers,
    Ben

Hi Ben, I went to Harvey Norman and purchased another Mio 300 today, basically because I have checked around, and $198 is probably the best price ever for a GPS. The guys at Harvey Norman were really friendly and helpful and basically told me this, when comparing the Mio 300 to the Tom Tom One V4:

      • Both have Text to speech, so they will say the street names. I think they said the V3 one doesnt say street names.
      • Mio 300 is a 4.3" screen, and V4 is only 3.5" screen. So the Mio is bigger.
      • Mio uses something called Navtech or Navteq for their mapping system, and I think Tom Tom uses Whereis or Sensis or something.
      • There is some promotion that Mio are doing where you can get a free carry case as well as 3-YEAR warranty, which is pretty awesome. The sign also said something about AC Charger free but I found it in the box when i bought it today. I saw Tom Tom's promotion. It was something like going into a draw and having a chance to win a Mazda (1 in a million, i reckon, or maybe rigged so a Tom Tom worker wins it), chance to win free driving lessons (i don't get this?), and something else you go in the draw for. Give me 3-year warranty and carry case free anyday.
      • From my using of the Mio 300, they are pretty fast and really easy to use. I didn't get the Tom Tom screen, like the map they use when your driving, looked pretty crap on the V4's. Like it was low-resolution or something. Then I didn't know how to work their interface. I wanted to put my street address first, and they didn't have this option (you have to put suburb in first, or something). The Mio is easy to use, mum and dad reckon its so simple, they love it.
      • When I looked at the prices, I was scratching my head. It was like $240 for Tom Tom V4 and this was "on special". Same features on Mio, bigger screen, 3 year warranty, free carry case, free A/C charger, only $198! It wasn't too hard for me to figure out which one to buy!
      • Most importantly, I saw all the people next to me shopping for GPS's and they were snapping up the Mio 300, 360 and 370 really really fast! I think in the 15-20 minutes standing there, I saw about 20 snapped up! I saw some people looking at the Tom Tom's but they all seemed to want the Mios in the end.

Hope this helps Ben. The Harvey Norman guy even recommended the Mios over the Tom Toms when I asked him. But I think the promo ends tomorrow then they are putting the price back to $279 or something around there. Even then, I would still get the Mio 300 over the Tom Tom V4.

Dixon nice info and helpful, but why spoil it with dumb comments like rigged promos. Most of these promos by legitimate companies are bound by various state laws. Your review about your mom and dad also doesnt make sense - did they try the Tom Tom? Your interface opinions are just that personal.

And a Hardly Normal SALES guy recommending this over the Tom Tom, is like the Good guy SALES person recommending Tom Tom, really they are selling the stock they have, if HN recommended the Tom Tom you'd go to Good guy's.

Your objective comments, like the screen size, the good info on the extra's, these were very helpful and assists me to look out for those features and make informed decisions. So while critical of the BS mentioned above, the rest of your comments are very helpful. The old adage - if it doesn't add, it detracts

      • thanks for the sales pitch, but you sold me already.
Picked one up this afternoon and have been playing with it since.
For me it was the best bang for buck, the features missing (bluetooth, 3d poi, live poi) didn't bother me at all, i just wanted a navigation device but with spoken street names (the tomtom one v3 misses this)

anyone so far it looks good, the 3 year warranty + case was a bonus!
i think i've found a bug in the map outside my house so i'll get to test mio support too!

    • If I was you, I'd buy the TomTom. i do alot of driving so i would buy either TomTom or Garmin.
I did have some Mio & Navman before.they do a good job. But i saw the Garmin & Tom Tom were the industry leader. you can't go wrong with TomTom or Garmin.

  • Just got this $198 special in Adelaide, SA in the Enfield store. They had the price of $299 on them, and I said to the bloke, these are listed as $198 in the Sydeny Morning Herald for Harvey Norman. He went away, and came back and said ours should be $198 too. there should be a sign up. I bet there still isn't a sign up though….. Bargain. Thanks dixon

  • Good device, $198 from Browns Plains in Brisbane too.

  • Yep, also listed on their website for $198 with 3 years warranty and carry case.

    http://www.harveynorman.com.au/products/index.php/computers/…

    • awesome, that's even better value. I'll go back to the store and claim these bonus.

  • Great find!!! I was about to get $200 Binatone from BigW :)
Just picked one up today from Harvey Norman. OfficeWorks does not have any in stock, otherwise they would have given me another 5% off. Not a big deal since I grabbed a $95 250GB portable hard drive from them (beated JB Hifi offer)

Kmart is selling this for $269 if you dont have a Harvey Norman near you

  • Thanks for posting it is a great deal!
I got one from thomastown today, they had at least 10 left in stock.

3 year warranty + free carry case when you register online:

    http://www.mio.com/au/mio-technology-press-releases-Get-even…

register before the 15th to get it!

  • According to Harvey Norman's website this model features:-

    Traffic Message Channel Ready
    3D landmarks

Is this correct? Mio's website mentions none of this in their specs. Anyone who has one can let me know?

    Thanks.

  • picked up one today @ preston store. Discount price wasn't advertised in-store. Required to ask salesperson for special price.

  • 3d maps but no 3d landmarks,
I've already found a bug in the maps - and it's right outside my house =(

for an extra $150 you can buy a traffic cradle:

  • I bought one, but I am still holding out for a special on the Nuvi 260 or Tom tom One v4 before I open my moov300.

I kind of like that the nuvi and the tomtom's are smaller and sleeker, cos if I go walking about somewhere, I can pop it in my bag and it can direct me around and I won't get lost. also they have a 5 hour battery time v's 2.5 or somethign like that for when you are roaming the streets lost.

So if anyone see's a nuvi260 or tom tom one v4 special, think of me and come and post it, cos I am going on holiday soon, and need to take it with me! Thanks!

  • Got one today, is there anyway to change the timezone you're in? mine's displaying the wrong time (2.5hours behind). Other than that can't complain for the price i suppose

    • +1

you have to setup your home address first

  • Got one recently from SA and the timezone is out by 2.5hrs. I had contacted Mio and they are working on a fix which should be due out within the next week or so on the website so keep an eye out. It had sometime to do with the timezones changing this year.

Great GPS unit for the price so I picked up another 2 today for family. Spoken street names sound real and 3 years warranty at the moment makes it such a great buy. $100 of RRP.

Highly recommended device for anyone looking for their first GPS device.

Arghhhhh… Just bought one yesterday at Myer for $240! Dammit! Oh well, still relatively happy with the purchase considering it beats the TomTom One v4 hands down in features (except for the cool MapShare feature TomTom offers - not sure how well that works in practice obviously - never touched it). Anyway, my review of the Moov 300 after one day of use:

    • took a very long time to initially get a GPS signal, I thought the unit was faulty! The manual is very comprehensive (148 pages of detailed instructions complete with diagrams of specific models!) yet it doesn't mention that it actually can take 15-20 mins to get an initial GPS fix (found that out on the online FAQs). Once I waited for that, no probs.
    • route calculation was lightning fast to/from Star City last night :) took like < 10 seconds
    • interface is the same as the NavMan, very easy to use
    • shows you distance to go, time to go, ETA, current speed (pretty standard stuff on all GPSs these days but good to know)
    • map looks 100x better than the TomTom One v4 (the TomTom was so ugly/fuzzy/unclear)
    • found map bugs already right near my house :( told me to turn right multiple times when it's been "no right turn" forever - damn buggy NavTeq maps! (guess that's not Mio's fault)
    • you can customise your own POIs through the software included
    • touchscreen is not that sensitive (I have an iPhone - so I'm sure anyone else there that also has one will say the same). You REALLY have to press the button sometimes
    • performance while searching for an address can be a little slow (there is a slight delay when pressing letters sometimes when I guess its trying to filter the list) but it's not tooooo bad (wish it was faster though)

Yes, the Moov 300 does not include GPS nor 3D landmarks as confirmed above. Its big brothers do. Check out http://cmsapp.mio.com/miojava/comparison-result-au.jsp?produ… for a comparison of the Moov 300, 360 and 370. Time is aye-OK for me in Sydney.

Compared to the TomTom One v4:

    • 4.5" screen vs 3.5" screen
    • carry case vs no carry case (current promotion via redemption)
    • extra ac adaptor vs no extra ac adaptor (says its a current promotion but not really as the extra ac adaptor comes IN the box)
    • 3 year warranty vs 1 year warranty (current promotion via redemption)
    • no community map sharing vs community map sharing
    • nice looking maps vs ugly looking maps (IMHO)
    • Windows CE underneath vs Linux underneath

Since it runs Windows CE underneath, you can hack it up (which I'm looking into that at the moment). Check out http://navmanunlocked.wikispaces.com/Unlock or http://www.netfresco.com/MioPocket/. Have fun :)

  • Great review above. Mine too took a min or so to initally pick up a signal for the first time but after that it was very fast. The address search seems to be a lil slow due to it reading out the street names. If you turn the spoken address off in the settings it seems much faster.

I have an iphone also which is easier to press however they are a different touchscreen. Overally for $198 its such a great product. SALE ends today so better hurry!!

Just picked this unit up from Harvey Norman in Auburn for my old man. Made sure it worked, then unlocked it and uploaded some custom apps. 4.3" sceen plays DivX's a lot nicer than a 3" tomtom :P

First impressions… its a sleek unit, although the touch screen is lacking, mind you, I'm used to capacitive touch responsiveness of my iphone and lappy. Not really chuffed with its overly helpful street name prediction (which goes to a "T" when no matches with an "S" are found for example). Packaging comes with AC adaptor and suction mount for the car. Took a little while to triangulate its position on first go, but after a while you'll get used to the lag.

The Moov is pretty much a rebadged Navman S35 (well kinda) so the same unlock techniques work. So much for the 3 year warranty offer, mine lasted about 15 minutes before I voided it.

  • Great buy, picked one up from Harvey Norman at Chatswood this arvo.
Tried to get Bing Lee & Myers to do a price match (need to increase my Myers One points), however they were unable to do so. Price from HN was below cost ie $215.73 incl GST

  • Got Officeworks to price match it and paid $188 ($198 less 5%). couldn't be happier :) Cheers….

  • Picked one up at HN Chatswood today - said they'd still be $198 until tomorrow - lucky for me because I only came across this thread last night!

Edit: Argh it doesn't have a headphone jack or replaceable battery, and the battery's only half the capacity of the old Digiwalker models. No free lunch I guess. Hope when the battery dies (inevitable) it's within the warranty period!

  • Got my free case.. in fact, got sent 2 warranties, and 2 cases.. any one else have this happen? Seems a bit weird? But don;t get too excited.. Case is like a sock. Kind of sucks! But maybe as I got 2, I can actually wear them as socks instead…. that's an idea…

  • i got my 2 socks too!
