Western Digital 4TB My Book Essential USB 3.0/2.0 External HardDrive $199 @ OW

930

I'm not sure this is a pricing error or something, but definitely a bargain, grab one before it's too late.

Mine came with MBook V.1016 Firmware and I have upgraded to V.1019 using the WDFirmwareUpdater.

Interesting, I wonder if that's a firmware in the sata-to-usb board and not the drive itself as the firmware in the drive I have is revision MPAOA3B0 which as you can see is nothing like what you've found.

Edit: I plugged in just the board, had to also plug in power, and it was detected by Windows as well as WDFirmwareUpdater which wanted to update it to 1.019 or similar, I didn't take much notice of the decimal places. So it does appear that new firmware is available for the 'My Book' part of these but perhaps not for the drive itself.

I didn't proceed with the update as I didn't see the point, the controller is going to sit in the box and do nothing pretty much forever so I didn't bother.

  • Can anyone post a $199 receipt please?

  • Just bought the last one from Strathpine, QLD. Took about 10 minutes and two phone calls to other stores to convince the lady to give it to me for $199, it scanned up as $235 and had a shelf price of $299. The other stores said it was a one day only pricing reduction, because a competitor had it for $199.

    • Any chance you could post the receipt mate? Wanna try get JB to match it.

    • Same info I got.

    • Thanks mate….will brave the sydney heat after work & hopefully come home with a couple drives :)

      • Woohoo…ended up getting OW@Hoxton Park to match your receipt.

        • I'm surprised they bumped the price up again today. The guy I was talking to yesterday said it was a discontinued line, and I thought they'd just want to get rid of them.

  • Those who have opened those, was there any CD inside? Also, with the power adaptor, the piece of paper I have mentions one that has changeable plugs (for different countries), but the one I have in front of me is AU style only and doesn't actually say Western Digital.

    • No CD but the drive itself had a number of things on it, didn't look before removing the partition, assumed it was all junk.

The plugpack doesn't have an interchangeable plug on it either, the last seagate I got had at least 4 IIRC. Just had another look at the plugpack, branded Ktec, not WD.

      • Thanks for the confirmation. I got a return for less, so wanted to check if I missed anything.

  • They scan at $235 now, you'll probably find any incorrect tickets have now been removed from the shelves.

There is no CD inside the box, the WD software comes loaded on the drive. They come with AU plugpack only. I bought one of these ages ago and it has a Hitachi 5400RPM HDD inside. No need to crack it open to find out, CrustalDiskInfo will tell you.

  • FYI. NOT entirely EXPIRED.

Arathna at Underwood OW - Cnr Kingston and Compton Rds, 4119 - is holding 2 X WD 4TB ($199 each) drives for Mark. So there are at least those 2 available there right now. If you are going for them reply to this so others know and there isn't a flood of Mark's friends trying to pick up his HDD's. :)

Probably best to ring and confirm too - 07 3809 5600 - I won't ring to cancel so they remain at $199 until closing at 9pm tonight.

It's a long story but I got my two at a nearer store with some difficulty.

Not sure what would be best to do here?

    • Do the right thing and let them know you no longer require them.

      • They are back on shelf now …

  • Could fellow members confirm that this 4tb mybook drive all come with hitachi drives inside, or could it be possible that some come with WD drives inside?

And also does anyone know if the 3tb Mybook essential drives come with wd or hitachi inside?

    Many thanks

    • I'm fairly sure the 4TB all come with a Hitachi drive inside. WD purchased Hitachi GST and AFAIK WD do not have a WD branded 4TB offering.

      • Thanks

I hope the 3tb ones dont come with hitachi

I rang WD call centre earlier and the employee based in the Caribbean said it was technically impossible for them to determine whether a particular drive had a wd or hitachi drive inside the enclosure for the mybook essential series.

  • I thought this was a genuine OW deal and had a friend going by a OW branch early today so I asked her to buy me two on her way. I gave her a printout of the JPG linked in OP and this threads address in case there was any issue/doubt. She was virtually accused of deception by staff who suggested the JPG had been altered because the 'real' price was higher than $199.

OW seem to be very disorganised at times and inclined to be negative towards people taking advantage of a 'discovered' deal, which I found out (as if it was a secret) was recent and only lasted a day - what kind of deal is that.

Even though I ended up getting 2 drives at $199 each it was a job finding someone who knew what they were talking about, and then finding someone who would honor the deal.

One excuse I was given for the deal not being honored was that it wasn't on their website, but I have never seen the WD 4TB on their site.

Is this a way they have of 'doing' deals without it costing too much? I just don't get it, goodwill is money in the bank. Ill-will can bust a business.

Welcome OW. Take the good with the insanity.

You have to realise that OW checks prices twice a day so the shelf price and scanned price can vary based on movements in price. The $199 was probably a response to a competitor's price which may have also been a temporary special. I notice the $235 scanned price later in the day was matching JB HiFi's price, not sure where the $199 price came from.

Don't be too hard on the staff at your local store, they may not have known about the deal. People do alter receipts and then try and get price matches. I know in this case your friend didn't but it does happen.

  • I had one on hold at Vermont South. When I got there last night (Fri 18th) it scanned at $235. The guy knew about the deal and gave it to me for $199. Very happy with OW.

  • Now this is probably the cause of its plummeting prices: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/wd4001faex-4tb-review,33…

  • Just plugged mine in and noise is OK but vibration is quite bad. I can feel it through my desk and laptop.

    Anyone else experiencing considerable vibration?

I was planning to crack it open and install into my living room server/HTPC, but I fear the vibration will make the metal PC case sound like a 1940s air conditioner (Married with Children reference).

    • You talking about the hard drive?

      Mine seems ok.

    • I can't feel any through the case of the 1st one I bought a while back, just has a slight buzz feeling. I haven't tried the 2nd one yet.

    • One of my two has slightly more vibration but nothing I am concerned about with 3yr warranty. A 1940's AC sounds serious …

At first, I tried two OW stores (Glen Waverley & Vermont South) and they refused to do $199. DAMN OW!

I went to JB and I just asked the guy that i am looking for ext HDD and show him the photo on ozbargain. He just said he can do the same price. I asked if he could do it cheaper if i get two. Ended up i got it for $184 each.

    • Can't believe there's so much margin in these things.

      • Gozz so the cost price is what? $140 for 4TB??? Amazing

  • Bought two today from Officeworks Albury. I thought it was a bit of a stretch seeing as how the deal is over a month old but they called Brisbane store and decided to not only price match, but price beat by 5%

Ended up with two drives for $378.10

The shop girl went from chirpy to… less chirpy. Unfortunately she wouldn't let me buy any more.

    • congrat can you please upload receipt…. some store will refuse matching from old receipt thats why
      thanks
