  • Thanks for this ! I was quite set on the Nikon D7000 but this camera is well reviewed and has similar specifications. Time to read dpreview and see how the offerings for lenses goes against the Nikon.

  • +1

Less lens variety but they have weather sealed lenses.
Imo pentax is better than nikon. Take a look on pentaxforums, there's more quaity there than dpreview.
I was in your position too but went pentax :)

  • Nice combo! Avoid the hassle of changing lens & the WR is a big plus.

  • Make sure you research and compare this with the K-5 II for perhaps less than $200 more (not necessarily Oz stock though) - the Mark II has some nice improvements (eg: better / faster focus) that people may wish to pay a little extra for…
    :-)

    • The most significant difference between the k-5 and the k-5ii, is the low light AF sans AF Assist lamp.
If you turn on AF assist lamp, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference in focus speeds or image quality unless you printed very large prints.
It would be better to go K-5, and put the 200 towards faster/better glass.

      • Are there any nice detailed reviews comparing the K-5 vs K-5 II vs K-5 IIS ? I thought I'll be comparing the D7000 vs the K5 and these other two popped up ! * head spinning *

EDIT - Haven't read it but found this - http://www.cameradebate.com/2012/pentax-k-5-ii-vs-nikon-d700…

        • Just to let you know that the K-5 and D7000 use the same sensor, made by Sony. But a few benefits of Pentax over Nikon:
          1) Pentax camera body has built in vibration reduction, while Nikon (and Canon) doesn't, which means you have to buy more expensive VR (or IS) lenses;
          2) You can buy very old Pentax lenses and still work fine on the latest Pentax body (no converter is required as the mount size has never changed). Some vintage lenses are still good and cheap.
          3) Good quality and value for money! K-5 is weather sealed! Pentax spends less on advertising, which drives the prices down compare to the same grade cameras of other brands. Check dpreview for detailed specs and test results. It scored higher than the D7000.

        • Yeah I've been reading about the K5 for the past 1/2 hour and it certainly seems to better the D7000 on the specifications front (weather sealing, inbuilt shake reduction etc). Now I just have to see if the ecosystem of lenses on offer for the Pentax ! And if they suit my needs :) It's usually Canon vs Nikon, then Pentax throws in this beast of a product !

        • Take a look at the limited lenses.
          Pretty unique bunch of primes.
          Personally, I like the 40mm pancake :D
I'll be buying one as soon as I see a bargain.

Also, if youre looking for a weather sealed lens, it should have a WR in the description.
Non-WR lenses will not be weather sealed. (evidently)

        • I don't think you can go wrong with either camera (K5 or D7000) and both manufacturers have more than enough quality lenses to empty your wallet on a regular basis, a few things to bear in mind:
          - is weather sealing important to you?
          - the 2nd hand market for Nikon would be greater (i.e. ebay, forums etc) purely because there are more Nikon users/fanboys than Pentax, so in theory it would be easiser to pick up used Nikon gear locally.
          - Pentax have quality primes with their Limited lenses. So if you are a prime shooter, you'll be in heaven (but it would be an expensive hobby)
          - The K5 is definitely the more compact of the two.

        • Thank you all for your input ! It's going to be a hard decision !

  • Yes, the K-5 is a very good camera and I was able to take some stunning shots with it.
I'm selling a K-5 body (used) for $600 if anyone is interested. Pick up in Sydney or can be posted to you. Just message me if interested.

  • k-5 is an excellent camera for stills. saying this I mean it is probably the best one.
unfortunately, it lacks manual controls for video mode.
you can still get very good video and adjust shutter speed indirectly, but it is a bit tricky.

  • I've Pentax Camera (K-7) and recently bought this lens. It's an awesome traveling lens. Works beautifully during rainy weather.
