  • Has anyone noticed just recently receiving about 30-40% less reception than the previous week? Definitely considering Kogan!

    • having really odd reception issues with both my amaysim lines for the past 3 months.
      my optus/internode line is ok.
i've checked that its not a phone issue either.

maybe optus wholesale is giving amaysim the short end of the stick?

      • my theory is I joined when Amaysim was still a small competitor. now getting bigger, it's putting more strain on their services.

    • can't believe kogan is doing mobile service as well. such an ambitious company. i wonder what network they use? their plans sound too goo to be true. I only worry about the reception and its 3g network speed.

      • They are using Telstra.

      • The are using Telstra, but from what I've experienced, speeds are not great… I got a Kogan sim to try in my tablet, but I get a lot faster speeds using my phone as a portable hotspot (using Amaysim)… tested in both city and rural areas… Hope it helps a little…

        • i'm not worried about the data speed as much as I worry about the after sales support from kogan.

supporting parallel import goods is one thing, supporting mobile network issues is a different kettle of fish altogether.
maybe they will go the live connected/exetel route…

    • Not sure. I passed a phone with my Amaysim card to my in-laws 2 weeks ago as they'll be in Australia for a month. Haven't received any calls from them :P

      • hmm.. that could be a 'feature' and a good thing… =X

    • I mainly use them for data as a I have a dual-SIM smartphone.
Haven't noticed any change with their data speeds. They are still excellent.

  • Amaysim is OK, but the customer service is not perfect. I noticed the reception issue in the past two days, but it seems OK now. For the unlimited plans I believe Reb Bull, Penny Tel and Dodo is a little bit cheaper, but I've never tried, heard of Reb Bull has tethering issues with iPhones, but they offer free phones for $365 plan which gives you unlimited calls and a 5G / month for a whole year.

Edit: BTW, Amaysim was doing 20% off recharge in DSE, I bought $300 so it works out $32 per month.

    • Right on the dot. Red bull cant tether or mms with iphone.
I wisht they could. Their speeds are far superior to any other carrier. On a bad day, i get 500 kB/sec, on a good day 900.
Downside is, coverage is comparabe to a colander…

Was considering amaysim but I dont like the preactivated sim. I was planning to buy one as a spare :D

I never cease to be amazed by this sort of approach: Get people in with an upfront 'cheap' offer - then watch them leave when the ongoing price turns out to be less competitive than it might once have been.

I'd been taught that it tends to be cheaper to try and retain your existing customers - rather than chasing new ones with deals that just encourage costly churn - and the studies that I've seen tend to support the 'retention-first' approach.

Our household has 5 mobile phone accounts (plus NodePhone VOIP) and in the last 6 months, 3 of those accounts have migrated from Amaysim to Woolworths Mobile. We've still got 2 phones on Amaysim - but at least one is likely to be moved shortly…

Amaysim has set a decent standard for quite a while now - a pity to see them slipping back into the pack.

Amaysim use the Optus network and any reception issues experienced would be common to the Optus network.
Amaysims network is not a watered down version of the Optus network as many try to imply.
We use 2 mobiles on the Amaysim network here (around nth NSW) and no problems at all.
I have found their data link to be exceptional.

    • and by whose authority do you make that claim?

I have 4 sims on the optus network, 1 optus, 2 amaysim and 1 internode, and i have issues with the amaysim ones both inbound and outbound.

  • Kogan's really brought a new meaning to these Unlimited plans though, hasn't it? What happens when the month discount ends? Back to 60% more expensive than Kogan is what. $25 nowadays.

  • I looked at switching to a LCC (Low cost carrier of the phone variety… ie sub $20/mth) and after a fairly hefty spreadsheet, amaysim worked out to the worst provider by far for those that need data.

With per megabyte billing, if your phone did a 5KB weather check every hour, you'd chew threw ~24MB a day on that alone. Over a month that's 720MB (or $11 over your monthly allowance on the Flexi plan).

    As a comparison on:
    - Live Connected it would be ~ 3.5MB
    - TPG it would be ~ 7MB
    - Virgin it would be ~ 42MB

This is compounded by the fact that Amaysim have the smallest data inclusion (500MB, being half to a third of the cheaper competitors).

Although the call rates are VERY cheap (a tenth of the competitors), the fact that they only have 1/25th (4%) of the cap value that their competitors offer, it actually works out to be 3 to 4 times worse value.

TL;DR: If you have any sort of smart phone which may do regular data checks (weather, email, instant messaging etc), I'd stay away. Their call rates are also worse value than cheaper plans elsewhere… It's not worth it with the discount, and definitely not worth it when you plan goes back up to the normal price the next month!

My Optus re-seller options* (in order, according to my personal usage)…
    - TPG Medium ($14.99 / $17.99)
    - Live Connected M ($22)
    - Virgin Big 29 ($19).

    - Amaysim Flexi ($19.90)

    • As Telstra is too expensive, Telstra wholesale needs more feedback first and Vodafone is just a joke)
    • amaysim is good if you are calling overseas and don't want to faff around with pennytel/voip over existing adsl.

it used to be awesome for me for local calls/sms even (was on pay as you go)… but not anymore.

TPG, LC and the rest falls short on the international calls side, but when it comes to local calls, I think safest bet is TPG when it comes to call .vs. cost. That said, I heard lots of things about TPG as well. lol.

better the devil you know eh.

    • Even Telstra wholesale ( Kogan mobile) may come out 3X dearer next to thinly branded OPTUS ( Woolworths Mobile_29);

Consider pre-purchased 2-4hrs_international/3.3GBpm Data many would use up by ~1/09/ could be translated by $12.60/45d =$8.40pm, OR "$17.40" just at the normal (0.9290.66 for $500) if one don't technically use 'unlimited'.

  • Just tested it and this offer CAN be combined with their ongoing "refer-a-friend" promo. You CAN double-dip on this one.

This means that in addition to the 30% off, you can also get $10 credit on your new Amaysim SIM once you activate it:
    https://www.amaysim.com.au/refer-a-friend

Therefore, if you are not yet with Amaysim and think of taking advantage of this promo, do NOT make the mistake of just going directly to the website and buying the SIM. Use a referral link from someone who is already with Amaysim (like myself).

PM me for detailed instructions as I cannot post any referral links here.
