Currently the cheapest way to get SkyBus tickets, that I can find. You can also get a further 10% off on your first purchase from Pelago (~$6 cap, so purchase 2x return for best saving), or get 10% off in the app (probably also single use).

NRMA does have them for slightly cheaper but unfortunately they are "temporarily unavailable". Agoda is also another option but is currently $37.08 return,

You'll also earn 3 KF miles per dollar.

Note that tickets expire 3 months from date of purchase. Activity date does not matter.

And yes, I know there are cheaper ways to get to the airport. But sometimes SkyBus is simply the most convenient option for travellers.

Do we live in an age now where people can't go 25 minutes without the internet?

      • +3

        yes.

need to check for flight delays (or cancellations in the case of Jetstar flights)

        • -1

You don't need wifi to do that

          • @MrZ: So how else?

Ask the person next to you in the bus?

            • @jv: Mobile data. We're not in 2009 anymore, most people have more than enough data to check flight times etc.

              • +6

                @MrZ:

                Mobile data.

Many tourists going to/from airport do not have mobile data…

I don't when travelling, I just use wifi and voice over wifi for data/calls.

                • -2

@jv: Fair point. However if your flight is cancelled or delayed, finding out about it on the bus won't change anything. Also I think most travellers on the bus are locals or people from elsewhere in Australia. Melbourne isn't a popular/common destination for overseas travellers. I'm a rideshare driver and the vast majority of trips I do to the airport are people who live here, not foreign tourists.

The international tourists are probably catching SkyBus instead…

                • @jv: @jv MrZ sits at home writing comments on his keyboard, he probably doesn't know how to organise a trip overseas to know tourists usually need data to use maps, check info, check travel times and routes/changes. Basically anything technological in this day and age.

I can hear him whispering how he had to use a fold out map to navigate Australia back in his day.

                  • @JSWAN3: I've traveled overseas to the US numerous times and managed without a phone (this was in 2015 before I owned a smartphone).

                    • @MrZ: Its a convenience thing to access information faster.
Maybe medical apps to help track things?

It's not always for entertainment / anti social reasons.
Strange comment to make to begin with.

The Airport trainline should of been built like 20 years ago but too many tossers in the kitchen ruining it for the rest of us plebians and we have to deal with dumb crap like tolls, expensive parking or the skybus.

    • Totally agree, way too late for an airport train line already.

    • The airport rail wont be much better as the current government wants it to make stops at suburban stations rather than an express train to the airport…

      • It will take about 29 minutes, that's comparable to SkyBus travel times.

      • +1

        So incredibly stupid.

Modern countries have airport express for a reason.

The only acceptable exception is Brisbane which is express bar 1 or 2 stops and that's fine.

Making it a normal train means airport passengers have to fight for space for luggage etc.

        Pointless

        • Wrong, Auckland has no airport rail at all.

          • -3

            @MrZ: Nobody cares about Auckland.

            • @jv: Why not?

    • +1

As someone from Sydney who has a trainline to the airport, I loathe ours. It costs $20 each way!
Yes, cheaper than an uber and convenient but its public transport, by principle it should be more affordable. Hopefully when Melbourne gets theirs it will be proper PT prices.

  • Dude! I just bought a return ticket last night for $41.20 via the official site. :(

      Why?

Why did I buy it? Or why am I sad that I, a certified OzBargainer, paid more?

I think it ends up being cheaper to get a taxi/uber if you have >2 people.

That is not good for climate change…

If you're travelling for 2 weeks or less, might as well drive and use the long term parking…

          • @jv: Certainly, if you live in Melbourne.

Free shuttle to/from DFO is the way to go if timings line up

  • How long until there is a train, these prices are crazy

  • Looks like Pelago has taken it down.. Wonder if SkyBus monitors OzBargain for discounts for their service or if it sees too many from one provider, and stops it.

Agoda is still slightly cheaper, so people can use that for now I guess!

  • looks like it's back now
