Tagging @UncleRico and @klaw81 who will be able to explain this in much better detail :)

    • +17

Cheers @Clear - many thanks for going into bat one more time with our friends at Ali and Reolink.

This one was on @klaw81's hit list and I don't have any personal experience with the 833A - so he'll likely be able to speak more intelligently than I - but I'll do my best to give you some background.

Shy of using a ColorX-equipped bullet models like the CX410 or CX810, this camera purportedly has the best night vision viewing you'll get. Since ColorX is currently not available in a turret model, this is a great option for anyone who prefers the turret form factor or is looking to mount horizontally under soffits, which is often preferable for cabling runs where visible cabling or drilling through bricks or mortar may not appeal (especially if you're using pre-terminated CAT5/6 cabling where you'll need to drill even bigger holes).

8mp is often cited as the sweet spot for detail vs file size, esp as these use the h265 codec for great compression and are configurable via software for all the usual frame rates and resolutions. At only marginally more than the base model 810A (bullet) or 820A (turret) cams which don't feature the enhanced LED lighting, alarms, two way audio and configurable AI car/person/pet/other detection, these are a great option for anyone looking for a platform to build a bigger system on, in which case also look at the roundup at www.youtube.com/watch?v=InBRTveD9_w&pp=0gcJCfcAhR29_xXO featuring some of the aforementioned ColorX models (for vertical mount / night vision), Trackmix (for Pan Tilt Zoom) and Duo 2/3 (for wide angle) alongside an NVR if you don't already have one - cheapest of which is the 2tb 8 channel RLN-400 @ www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005391297462.html And if you do add other cams or an NVR - make sure you investigate Clear's earlier posts in the original coupon deal for even bigger discounts www.ozbargain.com.au/node/897271

Lastly, friendly reminder to navigate to the Coins page after clicking through to ensure you maximise discount by max'ing out any coin-based discount (which currently caps at 4%).

      Thanks again @Clear!

I neglected to mention that the single greatest use case for this over the CX810 would be the 3x optical zoom if you have a need to hone in on a specific view/angle.

And as @Elyxar notes below, the CX820 has just been released and is a turret version of the CX810. If you're after a turret but value night vision over zoom, it may be a better solution.

        • How does this compare to the E1 outdoor? I am looking to buy 4-5 outdoor PoE (mounted under roof eave, not wall) for residential use. This price is highly appealing.

          • +1

@ferrar1: E1 Outdoor is a PTZ camera with auto tracking and 5MP sensor. 833A is a fixed turret camera with no tracking, a manual zoom and an 8MP sensor.

            • @klaw81: @klaw81 do you need ptz and auto tracking for standard residential security camera? I assume not

              • @ferrar1: Not generally. They're typically a luxury you can do without, especially if the compromise is poorer motion capture, nightvision or resolution.

I'd be more inclined to build an install around cams like CX810, 833A or others with decent nighttime performance, and supplement with one or two PTZ's in areas where you want more zoomed detail or tracking, such as identifying faces on approach to your front door or number plates of cars, if deemed necessary.

Also, have a look into the Trackmix before you commit to the E1 Outdoor. Similar functionality, albeit the Trackmix has two lens - one which is fixed on a wider shot and a PTZ which will track live action. Best of both worlds…

              • @ferrar1: No, they're more common for industrial and commercial applications. But there are residential applications and some people do use them.

Most residential cameras are fixed set-and-forget types, where they are constantly monitoring particular areas - driveway, front door, back yard, side gate type of thing.

      • Hello there, apologies for hijacking the conversation but can I get your opinion on Tapo C410 wireless camera? I just something hassle free with no wires.

        • Sorry, I’ve got no knowledge of that cam.

  • I installed a set of these for my uncle last year.

As these are turret camera, it's only good for horizontal surface (ie. roof soffit) and not vertical surface (ie. wall). Reolink software didn't have the option to rotate the image by 90 degrees, so it looks weird when you have a mix of both.

    • +3

That's where something like the RLC-811A would be more useful. Perhaps I need to be asking for a price drop on those too?

      • +1

That what I personally have installed, but uncle wanted dome/turret camera.

We ended up getting a 'J Wall Mount' for the camera that was on the vertical surface (since cabling was already in the walls).

    • +3

As these are turret camera, it's only good for horizontal surface (ie. roof soffit) and not vertical surface (ie. wall).

Whilst roof is often better for a turret, a wall is fine, just expect to have a slight difference angle and need to fiddle. I've got one mounted to the back of my garage wall. If you want something for a wall or something with a wider angle, better to go for a Reolink RLC-840A which I've got my the front of my garage and its great.

Reolink software didn't have the option to rotate the image by 90 degrees, so it looks weird when you have a mix of both.

      Only flip is available.

      • Do you use the 840 standalone or with NVR? Currently have older Hikvisions which have motion, intrusion and line crossing detection all on camera and records to my NAS over SMB so I don't need to worry about a SD cards or NVR.

Just wondering if the 840s are like other Reolinks in that they require an SD card and only upload to an FTP server if using without their NVR?

        • I am not sure I fully understand your question, but I have a Reolink RLC-520A, and that streams the video to my Frigate NVR using RSTP. It does have an SD card in the unit, I haven't tried without the SD card in place but would be surprised if it didn't still let you stream to NVR without the SD card.

          • @noz: I guess what I meant to ask is can it use a network share for storage instead of an SD card, RTSP streaming aside as I'm not using any NVR.

I have the Reolink doorbell and can enable FTP uploading but its more of a secondary thing. Without the SD card I can't use the playback timeline to view any videos, and don't seem to be able to set a max amount of space for it to use whereby it will start overwriting old files (apart from overwriting a single file).

With my Hikvisions, I can add a network share as a virtual disk of sorts. I can still view all events on the timeline and play them back directly through the cameras interface and app. Was hoping the 840 had a similar feature.

        • +1

Not sure I get your question about the SD card. All of my reolink cameras lack SD cards and upload to my Frigate NAS just fine.

        • +1

Just wondering if the 840s are like other Reolinks in that they require an SD card and only upload to an FTP server if using without their NVR?

Most Reolink cameras don't require an SD card to work. Depending on their configuation, they're capable of uploading to an FTP server, recording to an NVR, recording to SD card, or a combination of all three.

        • Do you use the 840 standalone or with NVR?

          I have a Reolink NVR.

    • +2

I've got RLC820A's and have mounted them on various horizontal and vertical surfaces and everything inbetween. The main body rotates and then the camera section tilts, pivots and rotates inside the main housing.

So you're saying that the camera body is fixed to the main housing in this unit?

        • I've installed 5x RLC-1224A which are similar looking turret cameras onto walls. All have been able to swivel (rotate) the camera.

As an example within your linked picture, I was able to say swivel the camera so that the top LED is at the bottom for instance. Not sure why you couldn't with yours?

The only thing with my turrets being installed on brick walls was that I needed to spend a bit more to purchase Reolink Junction Box D20's to help with housing the cabling.

          • @AnDyStYLe: Thinking back, I think the main issue might have been the cabling location in the wall.

It was too low to get a decent FOV and not being able to rotate the image by 90° in their software.

          • @AnDyStYLe: Reolink junction boxes are dear as poison.

            G. Craftsman make a full-metal universal waterproofed junction box that works on all of my Reolink cams (I don't currently have this model cam, but will soon!) - model S-B310. It's sold by a number of sellers on AliExpress around the US$10 mark, with up to 65% off via coins and more again after coupons.

            www.aliexpress.com/item/1005007914123138

            • +1

@UncleRico: Yeah the D20's are $$$ but I couldn't find an aftermarket version I was 100% confident that would fit my RLC-1224A's. So I had to bite the bullet. Ended being about $30 a pop after discounts etc. Still ouch 😣

You link is broken, although keen to see it for future purposes. Thanks for the heads up!

    • it's only good for horizontal surface (ie. roof soffit) and not vertical surface (ie. wall)

I have a very similar camera mounted to a vertical wall at home and facing almost perpendicular with the wall while retaining landscape orientation. It does require using the turret swivel in a slightly less conventional fashion, but still works just fine.

I agree it looks a lot more "normal" when mounted under a soffit though.

    • You can rotate the image now and you can rotate the turret 90 deg if mounting to wall as I have, no issues.

      • I believe that feature was only added late last year and only available to some models. ie Corridor Mode

  • is the person detection AI built into the camera? Or based on my NVR? I have an older set of cameras (RLC-810A) and the AI is awful. any time a spiderweb is over the lens at night, constant person alerts. Usually if its windy too, the shadows moving on the ground throw person alerts. Its woeful for 2025

    • On the camera. Works for me. Don't have a NVR.
Though I doubt how "AI" it is. Probs more like how many pixels move. But works pretty well.
      I grabbed another

      • AI works well enough for me, albeit it's implementation on Argus/510A/520A/810A/820A base models seems a lot more volatile on the more fully featured models.

    • I don't have that issue on any of my cameras. The spider webs kick off the motion alert, but not the person alert.

What annoys me recently with the Reolink Doorbell I installed is that if I turn the hallway light on, it detects motion. So then I get an alert. That and when my camera above the door goes "into night mode" and there is the IR flash, I get an alert as well. Every night for the past week.

I've got all alerts off besides the front door otherwise I would be getting dogs and cars all the time for most of my cameras.

      • +1

I've got motion alerts off, just person and vehicle alerts. Otherwise my phone would be going non stop.
Maybe I should try a newer camera… I understand the domes are less susceptible to spiders webs as well

        • I understand the domes are less susceptible to spiders webs as well

Yeah, all my bullet cameras have issues with spiders. My PTZs and Dome, rarely have an issue.

Just check through your NVR that the cameras are running the latest firmware and the same for your NVR.

      • I had similar issues till I reduced sensitivity settings and reduced area to monitor in settings to below the horizon (or below the footpath). More accurate alerts now but it really does depend what is in your scene. I can see for example the IR glow from my neighbours cameras mounted around their home across the road which is quite bright on the screen at nights.

    • AI is built into the cameras. You can finetune not only the Sensitivity but also the size of objects to really dial in the detection events.

    • +1

I'm using several Reolink cameras running on-camera person and vehicle alerts with very few issues despite a recent spider epidemic. Although my doorbell definitely did see a spiderweb as a person a couple weeks ago.

I would strongly suggest tweaking the filters to reduce false positives - you can filter by location in the field of view, object size and adjust the sensitivity as required.

Also, I recommend using a long-lasting surface spray poison on your camera and nearby to prevent spiders from webbing nearby. They really like the warmth of the IR lens.

Any good deals for the E1 series indoor? It seems there hasn't been any good deal lately.

    • +2

Also waiting for the E1 Zoom; last deal was back in 2023.

  • Noob question.

Does it come with a long PoE cable? Or do you buy that separately?
Are most using their modem for the PoE connection?

    • Yes, includes a short one (1-2m from memory), which will likely not suffice for any decent run, but could be handy if you run to a POE Switch and need to patch it back to your NVR.

  • +1

I took the plunge and bought a reolink last month to replace a eufy. They are actually really good. The interface is a bit annoying compared to eufy but apart from that….far superior video and detection.

  • How do these compare to the RLC-1224A?

    • This has optical zoom

      • Optical zoom on a fixed camera is only really good for framing your shot. They do generally have a good wide angle when zoomed out. POE comparison chart here https://imgur.com/SAxCjE6

    • +1

8mp vs 12mp, but I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing if you value retention on your NVR HDD…

Whilst I doubt this comment will age well, presently 8mp is the file size vs resolution sweet spot.

    • +1

Had the same question as you. I ended up with the RLC-1224A as I prioritised 12MP over 8MP. Guess just personal choice. This helped with my decision - https://www.reddit.com/r/reolinkcam/comments/186y1w2/rlc1224…

  • Can only add 1 to the cart?

    • Deal pricing is usually only for 1.

  • I currently have a RLC-410W that has stopped working in the rear of the house and was thinking of moving my 511W from the front to the rear and getting a new front camera since i need a replacement.

Is the 811WA just a newer 511W and the most logical replacement?

I must say though the most recent update to the app is shocking and ive had to sideload an older version to one before they changed their app icon. I normally watch everything in 4x speed just to see if its worth rewatching/anything happens and it just couldnt do it without skipping all the time. The older version of the app works perfect on 4x

  • +1

Not this but have another model Reo. It is very good.

  • could one use both this type of camera and dahua equivalent POE camera plugged into the same NVR?
    Or do the brands matter?

    • +1

If they are ONVIF compliant (this one is), technically yes.

Depending on the NVR used, some functionality may be lost.

  • Do the cameras come with network cables (longer ones?) to connect back to the NVR?

    • +1

Not usually, unless purchased in an RLK combination kit with NVR and cams, in which case they are bundled with a 10m CAT5 cable. Most standalone Reolink cams typically only include a short patch lead.

      • Thank you!

        • +1

No prob. You're not missing much. Whilst they were a nice bonus in RLK kits, the bundled CAT5's are not particularly impressive, being very thin, with minimal shielding and not even 5E rated (which isn't a problem if the only bandwidth you're pushing is single cams, but still bugs me for future proofing). Whilst I've used some in shielded locations behind wall cavities, I'd use a better shielded CAT6 if I was running anywhere exposed to weather, pests or any general decay potential.

  • +1

The CX820 has already had the initial release in America so full stock release shouldn't be too far away for those willing to wait for the Color X turret cams. No zoom though.

    • +3

Just listed on the Australian site at $157 - https://reolink.com/au/product/cx820/

Not currently listed on AliExpress, but certainly one for @Clear to add to the wishlist next time he's in touch with the powers that be…

As you point out, if priced similarly to the 833A, it's likely going to be superior for night-time viewing if you can do without the optical zoom. It's a trade-off I'd be happy to go with in most locations and would form the basis of my system if I were rolling out a new install tomorrow…

      • +1

Good the CX820 is finally available but they will probably sell out fast. I'm just hoping my CX810s get the new AI updates (line crossing, loitering etc) when they come out.

        • Rough price excluded any further cashbacks, so it sounds like you may be leaving some discounts on the table.

Coupon value will depend on whether it’s the only thing in your inbox or not, but you should be able to use one AliExpress coupon, one Reolink coupon and a 3-4% for coins if you purchase it through a coins-enabled link on the website or app.

It will be crumbs of comfort now, but
REOLINK1794 would have saved you a further US$4 to get you closer to the quoted AU$107. Next time…

for anyone still unsure about CCTV or the price. atleast get a fake one for $10 at bunnings or im sure many CCTV wholesalers would have ones they can give for free that are broken. simply by having a fake CCTV by your porch or front door/ garage might prevent theft. ofcourse, they wont know if its real or not.

    • +1

Have you seen the news in Victoria? Youths do not care whether you have cameras or not, they will still break into your house. The main thing for CCTV is at least having some evidence if there is a break in.

  • +1

I have 9 of these cameras, they're probably as good as it gets at this price point for reolink. The LED spotlight is fantastic.

The AI can be very hit and miss though with many false positives for Human detection which can be annoying sometimes as it'll trigger the LED lights if you have them on.

  • Can only purchase 1 and need 4

  • +1

Just wanted to say thank you for comments by (almost 😉) everyone here: very informative as looking to upgrade from quite old cameras.

  • If your intention is catching thieves at night (lowlight and clearer motion video) then stick to the sweet spot of 4MP on a 1/1.8" sensor from Dahua or Hikvision - though you're spending a bit more.

These will be fine daytime or for watching your pet, and the varifocal is cool (allowing you to set the camera to have a wide view or zoom right into a spot). But they have a tiny sensor, don't get lost in the 4K 8MP talk.. it's still a good price for sure. Just understand the limitations and what you're actually installing one for ^_^

    • Toddwas, Always interested in finding better tech…

I currently have a Reolink NVR with 8x RLC820A and 1x CX810 (which replaced a CX410). Was planning on replacing some of the RLC820A with CX820's.

I haven’t heard of Dahua or Hikvision, would their camera's work with the Reolink NVR?
I am Interested in better colour night vision, what model of "4MP on a 1/1.8" sensor from Dahua" should I look at? Do you think they are better than the CX810's?
Where is a good place to get info? I did a quick google and only found a few specialist camera suppliers that stock them.

      • bluey47,

I've never played around with a reolink NVR - but ONVIF is the standard at which technologies can talk to each other - and both brands have it, but i'd imagine any of the extra features like AI wouldn't be compatible though - sorry not much help there!

But I'm really impressed by Dahua's range in lowlight from all the installs I've done, like i said you need that 1/1.8" sensor at around 4mp. If you know anything about cameras the bigger the sensor the more light it lets in, so bigger megapixels don't help you gain more light, it's just a larger more detailed image but a 4mp or even 2mp is still quite large and detailed for catching a criminal at night.

Dahua and Hikvision are the two brands your local security places offer for retail/commercial. and often get rebranded so could be under other brands - VIP Vision for example I swear i always see in pubs. But you can get budget ones from these brands with small sensors too so DYOR.

I've just ordered a rebranded Dahua, an Empiretech 1x IPC-Color4M-T that you might want to youtube. But i'm also eyeing off IPC-T54IR-ZE-S3 but it's a bit pricier (still amazing value for what you get).

It's a cool rabbit hole haha.

        • Thanks Toddwas, I like a good rabbit hole to research, thanks for the tips.

        • I absolutely agree with everything you've said, but you skipped over an important detail - these cameras have surprisingly bright LEDs that are activated on motion, and do a decent job of adding light to a dark scene. This helps make up for the smaller sensor to some extent, but only within a certain range of the camera.

      • +1
