    Anyone used this vs eufy?

Thinking of replacing my eufy doorbell (not 2k), to this as the eufy app is a bit too laggy , by the time the person rings doorbell , and I click in and it finally connects, the person is already gone.

    • +2

I get a similar thing with my tapo door bell - a bit of lag but if someone is out there, rings door bells and is waiting then connecting to tapo app is fine but like in your scenario, most of the time I get deliveries whether or not they ring door bell but I get the notification on my tapo door bell so I just see what the recording shows me

      • +1

I used to have an arlo doorbell that ‘called me’. That was great as I never missed the notification. I have a google doorbell and it sucks with the same lag. Looking at if eufy or tapo solves this.

        • well from my experience with eufy, no.

though - i have to wonder if its because the eufy is going through home base, its almost like its writing the data , uploading, then accessing from homebase, as opposed to stream directly / recording and streaming to a local sd

        • +2

I have the Tapo doorbell and it also has a similar feature. You can choose two ways to be notified when someone presses the doorbell ringer. It can either call you similar to a phone call or it will just appear as a persistent notification that allows you to accept the call as well.

          • +2

            @VuLT:

            call like a phone call

Yoooo this would be a huge QoL improvement over eufy as my eufy doorbell does NOT do this and it’s easy to miss doorbell notifications since I get endless stream of notifications

          • @VuLT: Is this for all tapo doorbells? Doesnt seem like they advertise it anywhere - def buy if this is true

          • @VuLT: when someone rings the door bell, i get a call notification via tapo app on my phone to pick up or decline.
I pick up and then it shows me the video and I can talk through if required - but by then the amazon driver has already gone lol

            • @prankster: Yeah I think like other have shared, it's not the most responsive thing. I use the automation to have it play a sound when the doorbell detects a person walking up so I get am in head start towards the door.

              • @VuLT: yeah same here too. but even so the amazon driver is already walking or gone by the time i get to the app anyway lol
plus i've got it on continuous recording so i can have everything recorded just in case

      Would reset help ?

    • +1

This is likely to be a cloud server issue, hosting your smart home devices locally is going to be the best way to tackle this issue as you will likely have the same problems across the board. FWIW my Tapo Wifi cameras can be sporadic as far as connecting goes, sometimes itll simply time out for no reason and ill have to close and restart the app a few times before it will kick in, the funny part is its always the camera thats closest to the wifi AP.

    • +2

I have the same issue with my Eufy - have spent far too long trying to find a fix, but nothing has helped so far. Would consider replacing with another system.

It never used to have any lag. Kind of cropped up ~ a year ago.

    • +1

Similar to others the lag can be very high. Couriers dont wait long but even still I almost never get to answer while they are there. By the time the notification comes the driveway is empty and Im just looking at the history of them pressing the button, waiting 10 seconds then leaving the package and driving off.

Seems to be the way of all these doorbells though and a lot is probably due to Android/iOS limiting the battery use of these apps.

    • This is the reason I avoided third party doorbells. I bought a Ring connected to an Echo Show, and it plays a loud ring and shows a video feed of the person almost immediately.

    • I prefer eufy to this as it’s easier to connect the eufy one to solar panel with customized brackets, so that I never had to worry about charging. The tapo one has to take battery out to charge.

      • i currently use my eufy with battery

not ideal as its pointing kind of towards a high traffic area so gets about a million pings a day.

  • +1

pretty good deal although this is my experience. I used to have eufy but I wanted continuous recording (even though eufy appears to have a new product that does this) at that time I changed to tapo. Put indoor and outdoor cameras and chucked in SD cards so then i'd have footage of everything with the continuous recording. Specifically got this as well because I'm in a corner house with lots of traffic even though in a local area.

Then i was trying to think what to get with the door bell and last year I wanted something with continuous recording so I got the D130 from US amazon and got my electrician friend to hook it up. And I guess I would recommend getting something continuous recording if you want all footage as opposed to just record when someone presses the door bell but I guess its personal preference. I've had deliveries (mainly from amazon lol) and they just drop off the item without ringing the door bell but because I had motion detection notification then I can look back which perhaps this model should be able to do?

Anyhow I know its not on sale which would've been more awesome but if you want something hard wired theres these 2 options

  • Price beat at Bunnings? OW has already matched the price.

    • Probably got a better chance of doing a PB against the OW price at Bunnings. Some appear to be a bit picky about online stuff and delivery charges.

    • Buy from anywhere other than Amazon if you can.

  • Looks like it works with home assistant also

I had this for about 5-6 months then sold it. I had streaming issues (hub was hardwired), and delays in starting the stream, resulting in me missing delivery drivers et. Doorbell and hub were located about 5 meters away from each other with only a brick wall. I replaced it with a TP-Link D235 plus chime (both connect via wifi, further than 5 meters) and it’s been a night and day difference. Hardwired it up for continuous recording, which isn’t really continuous but good enough.

    • I got D235 and I keep getting this strange glitch where after SD card is full (and loop recording is on), it just stops saving recording when SD card is full. I have to play around with settings and eventually it starts loop recording BUT after a few days, it completely stops again so I have to format the SD Card to get it to work again.

I've had this issue with two different D235 and two different SD cards

It is very good doorbell though

      • I've got a 256gb card leftover so I'm very far off from this problem, but thanks for the heads up! Hoping because it's still new that there's going to be many firmware updates to come.

      • I had this issue with my one of other tapo cameras, didn't think anything of it until I saw this comment.

    • +1

Can get a D235 from Germany for $163 delivered: https://www.amazon.com.au/Tapo-D235-Resolution-Detection-Wat…

Worthwhile over the D230 at $138?

      • +1

For the few dollars extra, I would, especially as I hardwired mine. You still get local storage, but the chime may not be included so check the listing (actually they may be a pair, but different plug for international). I grabbed mine for $225 delivered from JB with the chime, price matched from Amazon local stock.

        • Does the 235 also ‘phone call’ your phone?

          • @richmond12: Yeah, I can see an option to video call my phone or push notification for a call. Assume that’s the setting you’re referring to.

    • dang, thanks for chiming in - was about to order

      • Might be fine for you, mate! I was just sharing my experience. And like others, battery life was mediocre (maybe 3 months max at medium recording/ motion settings).

    • Hmm keep in mind the hub that comes with D230S1 is the one that's required for some of the non-WiFi based Tapo smart devices so it potentially has more value/utility there. Hard to argue against a working vs non-working smart doorbell though ofc but I seriously doubt everyone is going to have the same experience. Can't say my memory is perfect but if I remember right the D235's "hub" looking thing isn't a hub, just a dedicated doorbell ring speaker.

The battery is lucky to last 2 months with minimal use. I have to constantly take it off and charge it. It takes 8 hours plus to fully charge.

    • Yea I'm losing about 2% a day, and I get around 12 notifications daily on average. Have bought spare battery to swap over

      • Which battery? Where from?

      • How do you check this?

    • Maybe check your sensitivity settings. Mine's been in constant daily use for 3 months with no obvious performance deterioration.

      • What are your settings out of interest?

  • +2

I've had this for awhile. It's been great - The motion detection works well when and records as soon as someone opens the gate. The ringing on the device is sometimes delayed, but rarely. I have my phone to allow app to always run. Battery life is also amazing! (I bought a spare so I can swap it out, and only needs to be done every 3-4 months)

One design flaw is A LOT of people press the motion sensor instead of the "Press here" lol. One tradie pressed it so hard it inverted! But after an hour it popped back out and is still working fine.

  • Had this for over a year and have been pretty happy with it overall. Stream only takes a few seconds to load and notifications when the doorbell is pressed come through instantly. Though if you're looking to capture every single bit of movement out the front of your property, then this probably isn't for you. Battery life plummets if the camera is constantly waking up. I've turned the sensitivity of mine way down, to the point where I can walk through the entire front yard before it detects movement. And yet the app is STILL complaining that it's waking too often.

    • How long does the battery last? Are they replaceable?

      • You can buy a spare battery to swap over. Doesn't take long to swap it over.

      • It depends on your settings and where it's placed. If you only have it wake up when the doorbell is pressed, then it'll probably last a few months easily. If you have it pointing it at a busy street and having it wake up at the slightest motion, you could probably run it down in a few weeks.

        • Most importantly not sure if you need a hub for it

  • how does this compare to Ring? I have been eyeing for quite sometime and just haven't been able to pull the trigger.

  • +1

    Been watching too!

Anyone got a microSD card recommendation?

  • +1

Varies comments about this product on a previous deal.

  • Can I live view or see the event alerts remotely using their app without any subscriptions? If not, which one do you suggest?

    • Yes you can, well with the other hub cameras I can.

  • For what it's worth I had a Mubview video doorbell which was more trouble that it was worth. Too much lag and then the battery would need a recharge every 3 or 4 months as did the chimer. Borrowed a Ring to try but still the lag issue. Ended up buying a $20.00 doorbell without the video and with a chime that plugs into the wall socket. Sure the chime doesn't boast 200 ring tones but it works.

  • Is there any Anti-Theft Doorbell Mount available for this? I can see cases available for Ring and other doorbells but not for Tapo.

  • I think it's ok even if you get hacked the camera is facing outside with recordings of courier ppls rather than yourself. Just make you sure you isolate this one from your main home network

  • Thanks OP. got one. Looks like it has good reviews.

  • +1

Was $119 at Bunnings before. I can hold for the upsized cashback at least.

  • -2

I have this and it sucks. I miss heaps of deliveries where there's nothing on the camera but there's a box at my door. But it will catch people walking on the sidewalk and even thinks a bus is a person now and then. Awesome.

Regret it. Also, hugely tied to their paid subscription. Picture notifications are a paid feature.

    Deeply regret the purchase. Avoid.

    • Wow ok

    • I'd check your settings

      • +2

        Yes. It's surely the settings.

        Buy one. They're great.

        • Using it for a year after replacing a google doorbell. My hub is 15m away diagonal on the second floor through double brick so our experiences are different. Only criticism it's ugly and the chimes suck but it's bread and butter belongs in the top tier for a unit that requires no subscription and costs this much. Did you go for a replacement or give up? What do you use now?

    • Like almost every security camera it's a motion detector not a person detector and you can adjust it to not detect things like flying pigs.

I'm not subscribed and I have no trouble getting videos. All it takes is a cheap SD card installed in your hub. Does exactly what I want.

      • As I said, rich notifications (with pictures) are a paid feature. Reolink cameras detect people and pets easily.

Lotsa people butthurt that their favourite doorbell - that has no AI detection, has crap battery, restricts features to push toward an expensive event based subscription service and goes so far as to reset the damn chime settings after a firmware update - is being criticised in a public forum. Oh, the horror.

It's a crap product. I'm trying to help others to avoid it. I'm glad you're happy with yours - the fact that it records events to an SD card in the hub isn't high praise but if you're easily pleased, that's great!

  • used this for almost 6 months and its only now at 24% battery. the battery lasts forever if you set it to activate on the set zones rather than having it on all the time. best purchase ever.

  • +1

    Paid $150.45 last year

Charges via old style micro USB charger cable

Takes a fair while to charge, comment above said 8hrs and that would probably be right

There's a fair lag from when button is pressed, to accept and then start talking, often the postman is already heading back to his van by this time

    • Lag is massive.

    • Micro USB that's ancient 10 years old tech from 2013 on phones

      • I have a special little charger set aside for the fortnightly recharge of my doorbell. It's an overnight thing cause it takes forever.

  • How is this one compares to reolink

  • What happened to the good old ding dong ringers,?

    • Ditched

    • +1

Many recent door bells are unreliable if feedback is a guide. Ours threw in the towel after a few years and I looked around for a replacement. Gave up after reading a lot of user comments and searched for a decent video camera and chime which doesn't need third party interference. Landed on this. Only 3 months in but doing the job perfectly so far.

  • I went to Amazon and this doorbell is selling for $239.
