  • Hey fellow ozbargainers, is this a good deal? My Mum's after a basic laptop - she's really only going to use it for a bit of net surfing, word processing, Excel, maybe watch the odd movie, no games. Thanks guys!

Probably a bit overkill for her.

Is portability important or will it just sit on a desk? If portability is important Stom Computers has an Acer S3 for $449 + shipping. If it's just going to sit on a desk GoComp has a Samsung 350E5C for $484 or you can get a Asus X50A from MSY for $499.

EDIT The RAM & HDD are probably overkill. The CPU is actually previous gen, so the Samsung or Asus I suggest would be faster in that aspect. And while the HDD would be slightly faster in the Sony, the extra RAM wouldn't do anything for your ma. So I say overkill, but don't be fooled into thinking it's actually better in any serious way. It isn't.

    • Aldi have a 17.3" i3-2310M unit they sold for $399 at a recent Carnegie store opening, down from $549. The larger size with higher resolution 1600x900 LCD is perfect for basic use. Was marked down to $349 three days ago but stock has since gone. Perhaps worth keeping an eye on?

  • I wouldn't bother COTD has never worked for me. Either they have 3 in stock and it goes sold out in minutes or they send you an email later apologizing and saying they ran out of stock.

  • I was looking for a nice all round laptop for my sister and found this to be a much better deal, if you don't mind pink. Better screen resolution and video card more than makes up for the smaller ram and hard drive, for ~$50 more…
