Shamelessly copied from Clear’s deal

The WTR Pro is a more powerful than the usual NAS drives in that it has an AMD Ryzen 7 5825U 8 core, 16 thread CPU paired with AMD Radeon graphics. For video output there's a HDMI 2.1 port, DisplayPort and a full feature USB-C port with 4K video out and PD100W input.

Featuring 4 2.5/3.5" SATA bays (not hot-swappable), 2x M.2 NVMe Gen3 x4 slots and an M.2 WiFi slot that can be turned into an additional SSD slot. For RAM there's two DDR4-3200 SODIMM RAM slots with support for up to 64GB and for connectivity there's two 2.5G LAN ports.

In terms of I/O they've opted to add the ports to the side with 2x 2.5G LAN, 2x USB 3.2, 2x USB 2.0, DP, HDMI, USB-C, MicroSD card slot, 3.5mm audio jack and the DC port. On the rear there is a large 120mm fan to keep the system cool.

While barebones it still comes with Windows 11 Pro and you can install any other OS like TrueNAS, XPEnology and more.

Tips and tricks:

The WiFi slot can be used as an M.2 NVMe x1 SSD slot and Aoostar may bundle a 2230/2242 sized SSD adapter to convert this. If they don't you can pick up adapters like this cheap or with a bit of effort fit a normal sized 2880 SSD.

Fan settings can be found in the fairly unrestricted BIOS under "/advanced/hardware monitor/system fan". Since it uses a 4pin connector you can swap it out for another. Fan modes:

  • Fan off (0x70) = 30
  • Fan start (0x71) = 35
  • Full speed (0x72) = 80

    • Nope they don't

Any 6 or 8 bay options?

  • I bought one it looks great 👍

I am wondering if this would be suitable for a home data backup device or is it an overkill? Wanting to have some redundancy for our photos and videos of the family. Do not want a media server or to run VM's, just data backup. I guess the other option is to pay for web data storage, would this be better solution for our requirements? By the time we buy the unit and at least x3 red drives, it may be cheaper. I have some basic understanding of NAS drives but my knowledge is diminishing as time goes by with the advancement of technology and solutions. Thanks for your help

    • I'd love to know this too!

    • +2

If you want purely backup there are probably cheaper 2bay solutions like the asustor 1102. Sips power and ready to run out of the box (add a couple of reds) doing Time Machine backups, network shares, cloud sync etc.

If you look at the service life of HDDs and the unit itself, cloud is almost always cheaper but the data is not really yours anymore.

      • Thank you for your assistance and I'll have a look at the Asustor.

Are you going to keep another copy off-site? If not I think something like Crashplan would be better. All copies of data at one location is a big single point of failure.

      • +2

Good question, in theory yes but I know that bad habits can occur and especially if limiting the number of drives to buy. Had not heard of Crashplan before but they look very interesting. Even for the short-term until I get a more permanent solution. Historically I never really contemplated cloud due to upload speeds but that has changed so much in the past few years. I'm old enough to have relied on 14.4kbps to upload files and thought that 56kbps was lightning fast. Oh how times have changed. Thanks for information

  • can this thing operate as a desktop pc as well? either with Windows Server on it, or could i install it into a proxmox box?

    • yes

They will introduce a new product in April, the WTR Max W/ 6HDD, 5SSD, AMD 8845HS, ECC memory, OC Link, USB 4. https://www.reddit.com/r/DataHoarder/comments/1ikjoeq/aoosta…

    • This is the one I want. Hope we can get a good price on it.

      • Price is about AU$900

        • Yeah. Hoping to get some discount codes though.

    • Waiting for this one too before upgrading my NAS.

  • It has windows os and hdmi output and usb ports, igpu. So i guess yes?

  • Can you run these Ryzen models with one stick of ram?

    • Yes. Obviously running dual channel RAM is going to give you better performance, especially around the iGPU.

      • Thanks. Ordered mine Monday night and received this morning :) RAM is due from Amazon this afternoon.

I ended up getting dual channel but may switch to one stick for future upgradability

        • Crazy fast… must be from local warehouse

Lucky. I ordered mine at about 4am on Tuesday and it still hasn't even shipped yet :-(

Looking forward to it replacing 6 separate boxes in my office…

  • None of the codes working for me :(

OZAU70, AUAS70 -For security reasons your request can't currently be processed
CLEAR40 - This coupon code is for single use only

Haven't bought anything off Aliexpress in a few months!

  • Was going to wait for the 6 bay ones but decided to swing back to this,

I noticed it charges tax at the checkout was that the same for everyone as thought it would have been mentioned in price if that was the case so just checking?

  • This is marked as out of stock but is still available for purchase?

    • +1

Was out of stock at that time, I’ve removed the label

    Anyone else get:

Expired Seller failed to ship your order on time. A full refund will be received in 3-20 days. ?

    • +1

I saw that mine was getting close to that point so used the option to extend the delivery time by a bit rather than having it automatically refunded…

I think that someone said that they had heard from the seller that they were out of stock but were expecting more stock this week…

      • Just noticed expired message. But didn't see option to extend the delivery time. :( Now its in process of refunding.

  • +1

    I messaged the seller and asked if there was an update and they said;

"No, the previous batch of goods had problems and was returned. The next batch will arrive on Monday, sent by DHL, and is expected to arrive on April 6-10."

So press the extend time button and wait if you still want the item.

The problems with the previous batch remain a mystery but hopefully it's an indicator of some good quality control on the sellers end occuring prior to dispatch.

      Latest update;

Expected to ship Tue/Wed this week via DHL. ETA 3-7 days to Australia.

    • Not posted yet. It is a sad day for sure.

    • It has shipped! With UPS and scheduled to arrive Thursday.

Thanks for coming on this journey with me.

To the person who negged me, cheer up sunshine :D
