Great snack for vegetarians / vegans / anyone looking to reduce consumption.

I enjoy the taste and buy these regularly. Takes 7-8 minutes in an air fryer.

Doesn’t seem to apply to every Coles. Make sure you select a location on the app.

If you’re in Tasmania, Coles Glenorchy and Eastlands has it on special.

      Technically it’s chick’n!

    • +17

'Plant based' is part of the name

    • +27

      No popcorn either.

      • +13

lol exactly what I was going to say — strange that popcorn isn't a problem at all 🤷‍♂️

    • +14

      Dont eat buffalo wings then😅

    • +10

Popcorn chicken also doesn't contain popcorn. How come you're not complaining about that?

    • +10

Care to educate on the ingredients that are giving you a heart attack?

        • +7

That's not how it works. You're the one making the claim.

            • +8

@xxJAGUARxx: Go look at the ingredients list on some regular chicken nuggets. You'll find they have a long list of ingredients as well. This is typical of any processed food. And yes, they're all at least somewhat unhealthy. This isn't a health food and doesn't advertise itself as such. It's just a meat free alternative.

    • +25

Based on research(TM) I know that snowflake meatcucks generally want vegans to die.

Well here's your chance - stop policing our food and just let us kill ourselves with our fake poisonous try-hard attempt to be like you.

      • meatcucks?

        • +2

Is that what it's call when I watch someone else eat my meat?

        • +1

          meatcucks?

          Like these

        • +2

          Just had a heart attack

Seems like you have the problem, not others.

    • -2

Eating meat is extremely healthy, and there's no shame in making a choice based on your beliefs.

Processed stuff is a different story.

      • -4

Thats all im trying to tell them but as always they get super offended.

    • +2

Your heart attack should have been over the unit price.
      Fry's $12.50/kg (normally 25/kg!)
      Coles Faves $12.50/kg everyday
On that alone, I know my preference.
Frys vegan sausage rolls were nice, but given the price I'd rather have a sandwich.

Now, as for nutritional data, the deal product is comparable — in some cases better — than the real chicken stuff.
      Fry's per 100g
      Fat - Saturated: 1.3g
      Fat - Total: 8.6g

      Steggles Southwest Pops per 100g
      Fat - Saturated: 2.1g
      Fat - Total: 15.1g

      Coles Southern Pops per 100g
      Fat - Saturated: 1.6g
      Fat - Total: 12.4 g

It's a similar story for fat values compared to others too. Sodium and other stuff is tit-for-tat, but overall they're mostly comparable.

    • Now, what ingredient(s) exactly are giving you grief?
Because comparable products (see my other post) have lots of scary sounding things for the coatings or marinades too.

What can I say? It's a scary world. Tend your garden and be happy!

    Total scam!

    • +4

More likely to be stabbed by kids than scammed.

      • +2

        Not in Coles.

        • +1

Just outside. Seems the latest was only yesterday.

    • +3

      They be trick'n us!

  • +3

Everything is plant based if you think about it

    • +2

      And plants are planet based!

    • +1

“Everything is energy” based. Without the Sun (our main energy source) no plants, no atmosphere, no liquid water (everything frozen), no life as we know it in general

The few plants that survive without sunlight that are the exception get energy via chemosynthesis which essentially is using the Earth’s core energy/heat from chemicals so maybe we wouldn’t exist without the Sun but there’d be simple microbial life at the crust/seafloor

But thinking even further tho the Sun is what formed the planets through its + their own gravity…

So no Sun = no Earth, no life, no nothing!

That leads me to think fundamentally gravity is what started all this. It’s not “everything is gravity” tho like life on earth.. but gravity started the chain reaction. Makes me think maybe God is Gravity idk 🤷‍♂️. He decides what comes together and the rest just happens naturally, if he even exists… I’m agnostic anyway for anyone wondering, I’ll always be on the fence until I see him myself🦉

      TL:DR;
Everything is energy and that’s all there is to it

Sorry not sorry for the unsolicited thinking/research 🤭

The Fry's Schnitzels are awesome but I'm not a huge fan of these.

    • +1

Their frozen burgers are fantastic, though I'm not sure I'd bother with this kind of stuff.

    • +1

Their original range with the Asian Spiced Burgers, Sausages and Hot Dogs was really good. We sadly don’t get them here any more.

    • +10

      ok

    • +5

      Peanut butter ok?

@kungfuman: Why do you care? It's quite clear from the name that it's plant-based. How does this affect your life?

              • -2

@GregRust: it says chicken on the name how many people do you think or smart enough to read the whole packet? most people see the one world chicken. You shouldn't trick people into buying your product.

                • @kungfuman: Are you sure it says chicken in the name? Maybe read it again…

                  • @Never pay retail: yep if your ordering online people aren';t going to read the picture they are going to look at the name listed

"Frys Plant Based Popcorn Chicken | 300g

                    • @kungfuman: If they don’t read it properly, that’s on them. Only a fool would look at this and think it’s chicken. Move on.

                      • -1

@GregRust: F$%k no I will continue I will never move on until its remove from there website its false advertisement and Coles should be ashamed. its not any where near chicken and should never have that world ever against this product.

    • +13

Chicken chips also have no chicken in them.

Also BBQ chips have very little gas bottle in them, which is my favourite part of the BBQ. I too yelled in rage on the internet but they didn't fix it. FALSE ADVERTISING. PS I DO NOT GIVE FACEBOOK PERMISSION TO USE MY DATA

      • +9

I spend 4 hours trying to get the salt out of a chicken before learning that chicken salt is a complete lie.

Don’t even get me started on chickpea, but that’s on me for misreading it.

    • +5

It's not called 'chicken'. Clearly didn't read or comprehend the title.

  • +6

Fry's do great plant-based sausage rolls. These popcorn things are not good though IMO, they have zero flavour and require excess sauce.

    • +4

I love the sausage rolls. Filling’s good.

  • +1

so does it taste like plant or chicken ?

    • +6

Chicken obviously and that's the whole purpose all without killing chicken

    • +1

Honestly, these definitely dont live up to the texture flavour combo of chicken compared to some of the other brands (quorn) , however as a fun little treat for those who dont eat actual chicken they can be a nice change as I believe these are the only mock popcorn chicken on the market.

    • +20

Correct me if I am wrong, but i dont believe fried chicken, even of the plant based kind, is a food people eat to be healthy….

it is a misconception as a whole that no meat = healthy. While the meatfree diet is a health thing for some people, a lot of vegetarians (myself) chose to not eat meat as a moral or ecological decision.

        • +5

Mainly because it is a bunch of junk thrown together in ratios never seen in nature

That's not what makes something healthy or unhealthy. Our houses, clothes, toothpaste, medicines, etc, all qualify by those terms.

What makes it healthy or unhealthy is the amount of fat, salt, sugar, etc.

        • +3

But can't fried chicken easily be ultra processed too?

        • +2

Popcorn chicken is also ultra processed food.

      • +1

        It's also a misconception that vegan/vegetarian = healthy

        https://youtube.com/shorts/ZtbeYwazv_A?

    • +3

Nobody ever said it was healthy just because it's vegan. They're popcorn chicken. Vegan or not, of course they're not a health food.

    • +1

There are only two ingredients in that list which are harmful, the same two ingredients you would find in a chicken based version. Sunflower oil and palm oil.

  • +3

Generally love all the Fry's stuff especially the nuggets, definitely taste better than some other plant based brands. And only recently found out they've been at it for 25yrs!

  • +13

Vegan food deal on Ozbargain, here we go again.

    • +8

seriously this is a website for DEALS, we need to chill out on the politics.

      • +10

What has poltics got to do with food to begin with? Cookers (pun intended) are so easily triggered.

          • +5

@xxJAGUARxx: Thank you for your much needed advice about the healthfulness of popcorn chick'n, which we all previously thought was a health food. Strangely, I don't see any of these thoughtful comments about the food being unhealthy when it's a deal for fast food, chips, or ice cream.

          • +1

@xxJAGUARxx: I'm not vegan. If the day comes that there's an affordable alternative to meat that is identical without the suffering to animals (ie. Cultured meat) I'll be very happy. Seems people that are extreme anti meat-alternatives see part of the value of meat is that some animal has been killed for you. That is very disturbing and if we're offering advice, I'd suggest that type of mindset requires professional mental treatment.

            They get butthurt

            Ironic.

    • +8

Lol I know, so many people triggered like they are forced to eat it. First world problems for sure.

  • +7

Who would have thought chick'n would be so triggering?

  • +4

I feel like these vegan food deals need a trigger warning. Need to make this a safe space for people who eat meat.

  • Halal?

  • -3

I think I saw this on Idiocracy

    Love these
