IKEA Wardrobe Question - Any Experts Please?

Hey guys,

Wondering if anyone here is familiar with IKEA products…

We're looking to buy these wardrobes:
https://www.ikea.com/au/en/p/kleppstad-wardrobe-with-2-doors…
https://www.ikea.com/au/en/p/kleppstad-wardrobe-with-sliding…

The problem is that we don't need anywhere near that amount of hanging space, and we prefer to put in more shelves.
Is there a way to tell by either products, how many more shelves we could add? As I can see that you can buy more shelves separately…

Thanks so much!

"My human colleagues are not available at the moment.

Our Live Chat operating hours are Monday - Sunday 7 am - 9 pm AEST and we are available on the phone Monday - Sunday 9 am - 8 pm AEST."

          Weird, will try tomorrow…

At the same time ask Ikea how many parts there are to assemble and how many hours it takes to assemble a wardrobe (think 3-4 hours)
and how long they will last given they are never assmebled properly and fall apart as soon as you try to move them!

      Never ikea for me!

      Ive learn't my lesson

        never assmebled properly

sounds like a case of user error

Doesn't look like they have any holes for extra shelves, other than what they have on offer.

Why not go with the pax range that allows for unlimited shelves?

    • Thanks for this, appreciate your help! So anything within the PAX range allows for unlimited shelving?

      • pax units have holes from top to bottom, so yes you can have near unlimited shelves.

I take issue with you saying that a wardrobe can have an unlimited amount of shelves. Can I really fit 3,452,188 shelves in there?

      • As long as you have the "TARDIS" model of wardrobe, yes.

Can I really fit 3,452,188 shelves in there?

Yes if you try hard enough, if you can't get 3,452,188 shelves in there, then you are a failure.

    Avoid like the plague!

Had this wardrobe years ago… Have a look at Step 17 in the instructions. That's a cardboard back!

    Hence the price

The thing has no structural integrity and becomes a laughing stock any time it needs moving

    • Back panel:
      Fibreboard, Printed acrylic paint

      • Yeah but many overlook it. It's not until you go to build it that you wonder where the missing piece of wood is and then realise

I've braced some ikea cupboards and storage units from the back and they come up decently solid.

Also got a few sets of wire baskets in their flimsy metal frames braced on the back and with a top shelf (melamine mdf sheet) and apart from the shelf being very useful it's also rigid and much heavier now. Use it every day, no problems.

          • @fantombloo: What do you use for bracing?

I made the mistake of buying Besta two drawer unit and it wobbles like jello. IKEA's answer is that it needs to be attached to a wall. Even if I was willing to go drilling into the apartment double brick walls (which I'm not), it still would not be possible because the presence of a skirting board means that the top of the unit is nearly 10cm from the wall.

I, like most people would, was assuming that if I buy a piece of furniture it would be able to stand on it's own, not require a house wall to hold it up.

@peteru: For the cupboards I just used some masonite triangles (edges probably around 30cm) in the corners, straight into ends of the panels with wood screws.

Check the online documentation - it clearly shows markers for additional shelves. The additional shelve is even mentioned on the product page.

You can see from the pics that the sliding door version has holes for one more shelf on each side. The cheaper one does not.

My house is full of PAX wardrobes, which are very flexible. Of course I did not pay full price, which is a lot.

    • Lol thanks! Any suggestions how to avoid full price, besides for using discounted gift cards?

      Thank you so much

Nothing short-term, except look on Gumtree and facebook.
I got a lot of stuff at clearance prices, and from the "as is" section when renovating.

I tried to assemble an ikea wardrobe with, honestly, hundreds of parts & a single-sheet instructions a while back. Many hours later, not good.
My mother said ‘get Sorenson’. Within 2 hours of his arrival & $85 later it was perfectly done. When I sold that property 2 years later, the contract stipulated that the wardrobe, in situ, was part of the purchase.

    • Thanks for the recommendation :)

All the above. PAX is definitely configurable however you want. We booked a free in store consultation which was very helpful, as there are so many different options it can get quite confusing. I suggest you look at some of the very good YouTube videos on IKEA wardrobe assembly, particularly PAX, before you buy to get a better idea of what’s involved.
Once you’ve assembled and installed the carcasses, you can add and swap around shelves and drawers as you wish.
I put in 4.5 sets of pax with eight sliding doors. They are bolted to each other, and to the wall. You may need to level your floor before you start. I had help from a carpenter friend who had the same PAX sets. Took us two days. The .5 carcasse was one he cut down to fit a narrower space.
If you have reasonable assembly knowledge or get help from someone who does you will be fine.
Left over parts at the end are a red flag!

  • I just designed a PAX wardrobe using their online planner tool.

You can customise the design to what you want and add accessories such as lighting, storage organisers, and belt/cap racks. Once you're happy with the design, it will add all the components to your cart and you can choose delivery or pickup (I got free delivery as an Ikea Family member). The planner tool will also tell you which holes need to be used for heights of shelving when you do put it together.

It took 2 days to put together with 2 people and the instructions were fairly easy to follow (though some I had to reread twice). Overall I'm happy with the outcome. It's true the backing is flimsy material but in reality, its just there for show and not used for weight bearing. I'm sure I could get better quality from a cabinet maker, but at three times the price I'm willing to forego a bit of quality and it still looks great.
