Do Payments to DEFT Count as Eligible Spend for Credit Card Bonus Offers?

Hi, can anyone confirm if payments to DEFT for Body Corporate Fees count as an eligible purchase towards credit card spends?

I know you can pay via Sniip, but the Sniip fee of 1.5% is higher than paying directly to DEFT using a Mastercard which is 1.2%.

Specifically interested in ANZ or CBA if anyone has any experience using those and obtaining points for the payments.

  • I've done it before. No worries! Was 5+ years ago though…

    • Interesting…if they accept DEFT then rental payments can be used to meet the min spend.

As if it would be on the t&c

" Eligible purchases do not include interest, fees and charges, cash or ATM cash advances, cash equivalent transactions, gambling transactions, a purchase from or payment to a local, state or federal government or government related agency, BPAY or similar transactions (such as Post Billpay), refunds and balance transfers debited from the card account. Credit Card Product Switches, upgrades or Westpac group staff are ineligible for this offer. "

        just as an example
        from westpac
and if that doesn't give an answer then make a small test transaction to see if you get points for it not, Just wait like 3 days or so that it normally takes to show if points come from that merchant or not.

        • Which part says DEFT?

          • @askbargain: if doesnt say then means its very likely eligible transcaction.
and thus should do a test transaction

@USER DC: so your original comment is useless. no t&c mentions DEFT

        • BPAY or similar transactions (such as Post Billpay)

This is where it is not obvious.

          • @CodeXD: If you open their (I mean Westpac point 3.2, but other banks have their own versions of it) actual terms pdf you can see that by similar transactions they mean "
            • transactions made using bill payment services such as
            Government Related Payments. "

            • @USER DC: But they can argue that DEFT is a bill payment service and thus not give you points, even if it is not explicitly listed.

You are right that it is best to do a test transaction but simply reading the T&C is not enough in this case.

            • @USER DC: Is DEFT government related now?

      You're downvoted but completely right.

Everything is spelt out in their terms and conditions.

      • Which part of T&C mentions DEFT?

  • It worked for me in the past

  • If you're going to use a mastercard to pay DEFT, why not use pay.com.au and only pay 1.1% (inc GST)? Then it would definitely be points-eligible spend.

Pay is for business payment, don't you need abn to sign up?

      • That’s what I thought too, don’t you need an ABN?

  • I have an ANZ credit card and previously had a NAB credit card last year. Both were used to pay rent through DEFT, which used to earn points. However, this stopped around the end of last year, though I can't recall the exact timing. Very disappointing!

  • I know you can pay via Sniip, but the Sniip fee of 1.5% is higher than paying directly to DEFT using a Mastercard which is 1.2%.

So what is the value of the points you would get? I would assume it is less than this fee, so this scheme looks like you are losing money on it.
