Wish to Relocate to USA. Any Suggestions?

My wife and I are Australian citizens, in early 30’s and seriously considering relocating to New York. We are in a position where if either of us gets a job in US, we can wrap up everything here and move within a month. I work in Asset Management in Investment industry, and my wife in Digital marketing.

Primary reasons to move:

  • 50x more career opportunities for me and probably 10x for my wife
  • Higher pay
  • my strong belief that US economy will become much more resilient and strong in coming years
  • NY lifestyle (lots to do, nightlife etc.)

It’s still early days, but I have been looking for work on East coast but the biggest challenge I am facing is the recruiters don’t understand what E3 visa is and don’t want to sponsor anyone from overseas.

On the other side my wife is still contemplating if it will be a good move for us? She is 80% convinced but due to remaining 20%, haven’t started applying for jobs. Her entire extended family lives on East coast and suggest we should move there too.

Could anyone please share their views if:

  1. It’s a good decision to move to New York from Sydney?
  2. Any suggestions on how can we break into the job market there?

Thanks for your time.

        • Everyone loves to compare with crazy USA. What about Switzerland? Similar high levels of gun ownership.

No we would not have taken on the US's gun culture. The US had that culture decades before Port Arthur. Australia never did. A once-off lone gunman with mental health issues event does not represent the whole country.

  • If you are rich, USA is a level above heaven, if you are poor it will be worst than AU.

Don't listen to the haters OP, I think it has some good potential. Try to get job sponsorships, that would be the quickest. OR, go the Russian route, come on a working/holiday visa and just have a kid there.

If you are going to New York, on landing, chuck away all of your documents and passport and claim asylum for undocumented immigrants. As a sanctuary city, it will be a much easier process and you'll get accommodation (often in a very high end hotel) and money whilst you are processed.
Same if you want to go to England.

  • one thing people are not aware of, once you become a US citizen, you will need to do US income taxes for the rest of your life, and if you move away they only go up to a certain amount the reciprocal tax agreement covers and then they will charge income tax on anything above that.

and if you want to renounce your citizenship then they asses all your assets, income and potential income to determine if they let you go, or they consider you a 'covered ex patriot' - if you are covered then you will still need to pay taxes
