Creative "Outlier Free" Wireless Bone Conduction Headphones $59.95 Delivered @ Creative Store

390

Virgin poster here.

My kids decided to start using my shokz headphones while on the trampoline, so was looking for some non-temu bone conductive headphones with an ok rep.

Officeworks selling Free model online only for $99, so could save a few extra dollars with price beat.

It looks like the whole bone conductive outlier series are on sale

IPX5 and 10hrs bluetooth battery, worth a shot for me if they sound OK and last

I have been using bone conductive headphones for years when exercising, I know they aren't for sound aficionados.

From a first pass it looks like the models are called Free and Free +, is that what’s confused you?

      • +5

Well, you are much better than me if you got it on first pass. Model naming was one of the things, two prices with one link was another, space between Free and + instead of Free+ indicated it was not a single term, but that + sign was used as substitute for "and"

        • +4

If only you were dumber it would have made perfect sense

    • +5

Best I could think of was adding inverted commas. It is weird naming hey

  • +6

Free model and $ seems like an odd combination

  • +16

These are uncomfortable compared to shokz. Yes I have both

    • +7

Thanks for sharing your experience, can you provide more details please? Is it that material is harsh to the skin, or that band is too tight over the ears, behind the neck… side pressure? Are they more suited for smaller or larger heads?

      • +3

Hurts where it touches my ears. I feel the need to take them off after a bit. Regret buying them

        • +2

Hopefully not as bad on a child's head. Thanks for the heads up. I only bought one just in case no good

        • Which model of shokz would you recommend?

          • +2

@DeToxin: I own quite a few headphones including a pair of the Shockz openrun pro's and I love them (it's my only pair of bone conduction, bought them after a friend let me try theirs).

Now the sound quality is okay but it's not up there with the rest of my headphones. They are comfortable though, easy to wear for a long time, great for calls, great when you don't want to block out the noise of the world around you. Charges fast, battery life is decent, charging is propriety which sucks but the magnetic clip thing in their cable does work well and it's probably a bit more durable in the long run so probably work the trade-off and you can get decent spare cables from aliexpress for about $6. The Shockz have become my preferred headphones when I'm outside of the house the only place I'd still wear my galaxy buds 2 is on places like trains and planes where i want that noise canceling. You can always pair the shockz with a pair of decent ear plugs though, because they are bone conduction that actually makes the sound louder. Basically as the shockz are completely open the sound feels more like it's in the room with you than you are using headphones and there are times where that is definitely preferable.

            My current headphones:
            Over-ear: Sony WH-1000XM5 and XM4 (ANC no longer works properly) and Audio-Technica ATH-M50xBT (v1)
On the go: Galaxy Buds 2, Shockz openrun pro

            • @AlmightyGaz: Thanks for the detailed reply, I've been wanting to get a pair for my bicycle commute each morning. Might have to test them out in store just to check they don't give me a tension headache as some people have commented

        • +3

Same with aftershokz… Gave me tension headaches. Likely due to fat head.

      • Username checks out

    • +2

Same here. I have the Free Pro+. Much less comfortable than any Shokz I’ve had and the sound is acceptable but not as good.

I’ve tried these and a pair of Lenovos as an alternative to Shokz, because my warranty experience on my first pair of wireless Shokz was so bad. But I keep buying Shokz because no other bone conduction headphones are as comfortable or sound as good.

These also have a weird rubber plug for the microphone hole to keep it dry, which doesn’t fill me with confidence.

Fine for kids on a trampoline, not a replacement for Shokz if you’re running or riding or on a call.

    • Same - I don't use them much due to discomfort.

  • There are a few good bone conducting ones on amazon. China brands but got good reviews.

    • +3

the review system on Amazon is broken… I'd take any reviews with a grain of salt on that site.

    • +23

Not my fault they named the model "free". Have reworded. Thanks for the neg

  • +6

I broke my Shokz cos I left them in my panniers :-( Must have been unlucky weight distribution.

But I got some cheapie Xiaomi ones from Aliexpress for like $20.
The sound is decent enough but if you need to use the microphone, you can forget these.

I thought for kids, it's more than adequate.

    Was this
    https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005007016727246.html

but there are other sellers too.

    • I almost bought a pair from a different store also claiming it was genuine Xiaomi. I am not sure Xiaomi actually makes bone conduction headphones? Can anyone confirm?

      • I cant tell if they are genuine or not but they are bone conduction. I can close off my ears and still hear.

But the microphone is shocking, figuratively speaking.

    • +1

Also have these, not tried the Shokz as I did not want to commit that much money yet. My understanding was they were not actually Xiaomi even though they were advertised as 'certified brand' by AliExpress, but they seem reasonable enough though the plastic is clearly budget.

Only issue I have is my ones do not auto shutdown, so if I don't remember to turn them off the battery just runs flat.

    • I bought these and they lasted 2 weeks before dying and not powering up

      • Fingers crossed. I've had this about 3 weeks so far.

    • +1

if the wires are intact you can easily repair Shokz with Selleys instant set super glue, they harden stronger than the plastic. I just put a nice blob where it snapped, holds firm good as new

      • Did yours snap too? It is still functional. Just doesnt stay on your head cos of the structure integrity.

I'll have to give this a go.

  • +2

I can’t understand why they want to use these on the trampoline. Is a speaker not sufficient? Or can they just jump and enjoy their time without (choppy) audio due to their jumping? These type of headphones work on vibration and there is a lot of external noise from jumping up and down.

Creative also have the Outlier Free Mini for smaller heads and that's currently $49.95 on Amazon.
I previously had the Outlier Free+. It was previously down to $69.95 on Amazon. I found that the curved part that goes over the ear was not durable (at least compared to Aftershokz Openmove) and Amazon was able to process the return after they broke. I did like the ability to make adjustments to the location of the transducers though.

Which Bone Conduction headphones have decent microphones for work calls?

My wife has banned in-ear headphones due to concerns about my ear health. Am finding Bluetooth connections with my Sony XM4s to be a fiddly when it comes to my work laptop. Also concerned about being super loud when speaking with noise cancelling headphones on!

    • Try openear, I can't go back to in ear, I have TrueFree Openear, it is so comfortable.

      • Thanks, this is at an all time low at the moment by the looks of it. How did you choose this versus the cheapest Amazon generic one?

        • I bought the Truefree O2 today, they have extra 25% off on top of the discounted price for a short period of time, final price $45, very light, lighter than the old Truefree and multi point connection faster.

      Highly recommend Shokz OpenComm 2

      • one vote from me for OpenComm2. I used it for a meeting while I was on Sydney Metro. The other end could hear me clearly.
However, being an open ear, sometimes it's hard to hear the other end when I'm in a noisy env. Also, it has no auto-turn-off. Furthermore, controlling is not intuitive: you need to press the same button for 5 seconds to turn it either on or off, so I usually got into the situation that I turned it off when I needed it for a call.

        • Yeah, it's not really suitable for loud environments (on the user end), which some people find that it defeats the purpose of open-ear and work (for most, it's to hear traffic when walking/exercising, or suitable for hearing impaired users). For me, it's more because in-ear hurts my ears and over-ear hurts the top of my head from the band. Open-ear is perfect for me and Shokz products have been very comfortable for long hour usage.
I often forget to turn mine off and yes it doesn't auto turn off, but I find that the battery drains VERY VERY slowly when it's not playing anything, so no issue there for me.
I usually do a quick press when I put it on. It will tell me the battery level which means it's on. If it doesn't say anything, then hold to turn it on.
          Overall, I have no complaint!

        • Thanks for the recommendation. That looks like a pretty serious microphone - not sure if I want something of that style but interesting.

  • Looking for a pair for swimming and the free pro plus are down to $169.95 from $254.95.
Are these worthwhile? Or should I go for the shokz openswim pro for $230?

    • +1

FYI they're only $139 on Creative's own Amazon page vs $169 on the website.

I just picked them up from Amazon.

I can't imagine the Shokz are twice as good for twice the price, these should do the trick

    • +1

I got a pair of swimming ones from AliExpress (called Model:S10) - $35 bucks delivered, mostly positive reviews, using for swimming and running, good clear sound, BT and MP3, LCD display. Doesn't hurt my head (and I've got a big one). Sound changing when going in/out of the water, but it might be all of them.

  • Looks like doesn't have good review in terms of product. People prefer shokz but those are $150+.

Looks like recommendation is to give it a miss

  • Have you guys tried earphones like these? They aren't bone conducting but they just hang outside the ear hole and pump music. I've been using these ones for a couple months and they are great! I've absolutely forgotten I've been wearing them a couple times as they are super comfortable. Just thought I'd put it out there. Obviously bone conducting are pretty different.

    • I have a cheap bone one, like $20 on promo, looks the same as the one posted here.

It is OK, but I don't like bone conduction, don't like the vibration, open ear is what I prefer now, but outdoor calling still need in ear

      • The ones I posted aren't bone conducting. They are surprisingly loud too for what they are.

    • The style you linked is called 'open ear'.
There was a Bose deal posted here last week - significantly more expensive though and OOS now.

Price just went up to $79.95 now for me.
When price was $59.95 when I checked earlier today.
Just make sure of the price before checking out.

    • i bought it earlier for $59.95, i just rechecked now and it's $79.95….they must have changed it

  • Shokz openrun 2 out of 3 stopped charging within the first month of usage.

  • I bought a pair for my son on Amazon for $62.95, minus $5 promotional coupon (for order over $59) it's cheaper than this. Also bought the mini version for younger son who has a smaller head from Amazon too.
