Read the source code before running.

    • I was wondering if they are giving away Windows for free now. This thing is $189 which seemingly barely covers the cost of the hardware. Only the suckers pay for Windows?

I'd blow it away and install Linux anyway.

      • May not be 100000% legit Windows…

  • +1

Wow. As a Mac mini user, would love to have something like this as an easy way to flick over to windows from time to time.

Shame the USB-C is power only, eliminates the option to have a dongle/dock and quickly switch between boxes.

  • Are these mini-pcs a viable alternative to using the typical google TV/fire cube/nvidia shield pro to play videos and kodi etc from?

    • +2

Yes but if you are using streaming services you can't get 4K through a PC so these are only suitable for pirate material.

      • Why can't you get 4K through this?

        • No streaming providers offer PCs their streams in 4K. Some of them will give you 1080p but others max out at 720p. It's to do with rights holders and the stupid DRM agreements they make.

Edit: Apparently Netflix will do 4K on PC now if you are using Edge browser with an HDCP compliant videocard + display and you have installed the 99 cent HEVC addon from the Windows Store. Not sure about other streaming services though.

streaming services you can't get 4K through a PC

Do you strictly mean DRM-wise? Cos the hardware and port should be able to output 4K just fine right? I'll only be using kodi and browser lol.

        • Yes DRM wise, your hardware is capable of it but no streaming providers offer it for PCs. Can't view 4K Netflix/Disney/Amazon on browser or through their windows store apps.

If you are using Edge/Safari some providers will give you a 1080p stream but on other browsers only give 720p as the max.

It's crazy how backwards paying for legal access to stuff is still, drives me nuts. Have to buy a streaming box and connect to your 2nd screen as a different input to get it in decent quality while using your PC.

Edit: Apparently Netflix will do 4K on PC now if you are using Edge browser with an HDCP compliant videocard + display and you have installed the 99 cent HEVC addon from the Windows Store. Not sure about other streaming services though.

Yes. I use one of the 3x intel n100's I have at home as a KODI media player.

The intel gpu has hardware decoding for just about every main CODEC including AV1. I use an intel n100 running LIBREELEC (a cut down linux o/s which boots direct into the KODI media player) and it plays everything fine, even really high bitrate 4K UHD blurays on a native 4K OLED screen.

The main caveats with using a mini pc for media playback

1 - buy an air mouse ($20-30) as the mini PC does not support HDMI CEC control (uness you build/buy a dongle to allow the tv remote control to also control the mini PC).
2 - you cannot play Dolby Vision files (no licence), but it will auto convert DV to HDR10 IF the DV stream has the HDR10 info in the stream.

I pass through audio to my AVR via HDMI / EARC.

      • Coupon has ended but I'll keep this info in mind.

        • +1

if you need Dolby Vision support (also 4K streaming) then I'd suggest looking at the same price android devices (you can still run KODI and jellyfin/plex clients on them).. I don't have one (though I am tempted to get one for testing) - an amazon firestick tv 4K may be a decent enough device - especially when it's on sale for about $50 AUD.

      • It's been a while since i've used Kodi.

I'm currently running an Emby & Plex server. Would it be possible to connect to Emby or Plex via Kodi? or boot to either of the 2?

Hoping for it to be a strong replacement for google tv's etc, but want it easy enough to use for my less tech savy family members (with the exception of the initial setup which i can do)…So something as simple and easy as a google tv but without the ads.

  • Would this run Minecraft?

    • yes, it can run GTA V at 1080p/30fps, so it will handle Minecraft

  • Curious, has anyone run these off a USB C monitor power cable?

  • For anyone confused about the $50 discount, it applies on the checkout page.

  • +1

    $50 discount code expired?

    • It applies at checkout…

      • Not any more. Code has gone.

  • Where exactly is the coupon?

  • I really needed this little pc… always late to the party

  • +2

Did anyone else just have their order get cancelled due to an apparent technical error? I got notified just 10 minutes ago.

    • +1

      Yeah. me too.

      • Yeah. me too.

        • Weird. When they were $179 I got mine no issues.

    • Mine was shipped

    • Yep just then. But no email just a notification in the app. What the heck

    • Yep.. very strange, considering this would hardly count as a price error!

  • -2

Shame these things are cheap but it costs $300 more if you want one with some empty HDD trays for a NAS.

    • +1

well then you're paying for the ease of the NAS case and power supply. so expected to be more expensive.

I built my own Intel N5095 based NAS for $600

n5095 mini-itx NAS motherboard from ali express (12 SATA ports) - was about $180 AUD delivered.
      16GB Corsaire Vengeance DDR4 3200 SO-DIMM - amazon - $44
Jonsbo N3 mini itx NAS case - PLE - $229
thermaltake toughpower SFX 550W PSU (total overkill for thi) - PLE - $159
6 x SATA thin cable ( ADCAUDX or similar) - amazon - just makes connecting SATA backplane to motherboard so much neater - $24

  • Ordered before this was expired.
no code anywhere, waited for it to be applied at checkout, got charged $239.99

    • +1

I think you progressed too far if you were charged….easy refund for sure.

    • That depends on when you ordered it.
I placed my order just before 12:30, and got the cancelled notification at 3:05pm, so the discount would've been revoked in that 2.5 hour window.

      • 1:19pm order was placed, i guess the code was stopped before then sometime.
I got a delivery order for tomorrow so i guess i will keep it an take a look.

  • I was polite and complained to Amazon about my order being cancelled with no reason from the seller. As well as the removal of the discount coupon but the nuc still being available to order. Amazon staff have reported the seller as no reason for cancellation was given to them as well and have asked I do the same and gave me a $50 credit for the coupon being removed

  • They have now jacked the price back up to $299

  • thanks OP

  • anyone know if these types of computers are good for daily use ? like Microsoft office - google and what about some light gaming ??

    • no offence but it's been posted multiple times in this and other mini pcs threads - I've been using my intel n100 mini PC (12GB) for the past year as a daily web browser, O365 usage, 1440p youtube viewer, email and near 24/7 torrenting / usenet downloader. Runs nearly silent most of the time, the fans will ramp up for a minute or so when unpacking large ZIP files. I bought a model with a 256GB SSD and installed a 1TB in it myself so I didn't need to copy things to my NAS quite so often.
As for gaming, depends on what you want to play but 1080p low details for newish games should run at an acceptable frame rate. Retro gaming (ps2, gamecube etc.) runs very nicely at 1080p.

      • 1080p low details for old games, 720p low details for newish games.

      • thanks for that, i do apologise im sure its been discussed in other threads but I did not see any specifics about whether its a good daily or not -

        • It's a modernish PC with decent ram and an SSD. What lead you to think it wouldn't make an okay daily?

I used to do tech support at a school but because I was employed directly by the school I wasn't given a computer, I just took in an old Intel quad core desktop, upgraded the ram to 8gb and put a 500gb crucial mx500 SSD and it was great as a daily PC. That PC is like 15yrs old now and still was quite snappy for just web surfing, windows remote desktop and word/outlook tasks. Basically any PC with an SSD is suitable for it.

        • the last few businesses I've done I.T. support for are generally running equivalent spec (but older) intel NUCs with 8-16GB RAM (mostly 8GB) and 256GB SSDs for retail POS, email, web inventory duties etc. They run O365 quite fine, but don't expect too much if you like having lots of tabs open.

  • +1

If you chat with em nicely, you might be able to get the same price $189 (they will issue the difference in credits) after you purchased with today's price.

    • Don't believe Amazon agents when they tell you this, you do the order but you will never see the credit and if you contact them later and say you were previously promised in a chat they will just deny it and say there's nothing they can do. Only resolution they offer is for you to return the item.

      • +1

Let's see what will happen. I had similar issues before and it was solved easily. Maybe coz I'm with Prime?

If they deny the chat, can't you provide the chat history or at least screenshot it?
