Kmart - Homemaker Capsule Coffee Machine (Nespresso Compatible) $29

1580

I've been wanting a Nespresso compatible coffee machine for months, but didn't want to fork out hundreds for a George Clooney-endorsed one. Kmart's currently having a clearance of their homebrand Homemaker brand Capsule Coffee Machines in-store for $29 - which is quite a saving when you compare it to their price of $89 back in August.

Bought at the Robina Kmart this morning, and they seemed to have a dozen or so in stock. Unfortunately it's not available on their online store.

As for the coffee - it's good. Better than the drip one in my house, and a ton better than instant. I tried it with Piazza D'oro pods, which are currently 2 packs of 10 for $10 at Coles.

EDIT: If anyone is interested at how it looks, here's a photo from the Kmart website. Build quality is pretty solid with what appears to be stainless steel on the outside, and unlike one of my friend's machines, it doesn't leak.

EDIT 2: Some are reporting that the machine is marked as $39 in-store but scanned as $29. Be sure to double-check before you buy!

Image on Shelf Normally $69, marked on shelf.

(This is my first submission to OzB, everyone - any tips for improving this in future?)

I tried the piazza D'oro strength 10 surprisingly it is not that strong, not bitter too - definitely recommended. Btw I'm not a strong coffee drinker. They're on special on woolies at $5/10 pack on sat - maybe still on now

Don't know whether to buy this or wait for my free Nespresso machine from AMEX

We bought one for the office a while ago when it was $69 and they work fine. I can guarantee the office works cafe vergnano capsule ($5.99) works as they are nespresso compatible. Coles cafe d'Or capsules ($4.99) also works as the original nespresso capsules. Do not use Aldi or MAP/Caffitaly capsules as they will leave some grounds but will not destroy your unit.

I have held back buying one for the house as I have a year's supply of ground coffee but at this price, I think I will buy one as the wife does not know/want to learn how to operate manual espresso machine.

  • Thanks for the post. Have been thinking of buying a coffee pod machine for a while.

I just found 2 articles about refilling pods which were interesting. The first wasn't too promising using plastic refillable pods from Ebay but the second looks worth a try.

The second article says to remove the metal lid of the Nespresso pod after use, rinse it then fill with 1.5 - 2 teaspoons of ground coffee and cover the top with foil. The first article says ground coffee at 3.8 works best.

We have a lot of coffee beans in our house so it would be good to use them up.

Maybe the Piazza D'oro ones could be refilled if they are the same as Nespresso ones.

If anyone tries this please let us know how you go.

We haven't bought the coffee machine yet.

I don't get the point in using 3rd party pods. Sure you might save a bit of money but imo the Nespresso pods are superior. And refillable? Don't get me started, isn't the whole point of the pod system is to avoid in dealing with the mess of ground coffee?!

      • +1

I don't understand the refillables either, but if I like the taste of the non-Nespresso branded ones than who cares if they aren't Nespresso? I didn't buy a Nespresso branded machine either :)

      • After trying many 3rd party one, the Nespresso pods are still the best tasting.

        g

    • I have tried refilling the Piazza one just for laugh and it actually works but only for small cup. For large cup, it basically stops half way.

  • Just bought one from Kmart Broadway nsw, plenty left over there. An excellent deal, thanks OP!!!!

  • Just got one from Kmart Chadstone, heaps in stock, sticker price was $39, scanned at $29 :D

  • Got one thanks… plenty of stocks @ Helensvale, QLD

  • Plenty of stock at Belmont Forum WA

  • Are there any chocolate pods available?

    • Nespresso has Variations once (or twice) a year. They had chocolate once but they don't usually repeat blends (except for Kazaar).

  • Approximately 30 units left at KMart on Burwood Highway tonight.

Was wondering if I should get one and decided to get it. $29 is pretty cheap, Slightly more than a round of drinks for the mates.

  • Thanks OP bought 1 from Eastgardens nsw plenty left 20+, tried it with Piazza D'oro strength 10 it was excellent .

I noticed a bit of water/ coffee drip after removing the cup and there's also a some residual water in the bin after pod is ejected. It's no biggie, I can wipe it off - but is it normal for this machine?

    • +1

The $500++ units do that also. The design caters for it though. "nature of the beast"

For anyone after a cheap milk frother, I have followed the advice provided on ozbargain many many months ago and used a standard coffee plunger. Just poured the milk into a mug, heat it in the microwave for under a min, pour into the coffee plunger, a couple of presses on the handle and you'll have some beautiful dense froth :)
    http://food-drink.helium.com/how-to/9699-how-to-make-frothy-…

    • cheers macca!

  • Just brought one from Kmart cranbourne vic and there was about 35 left at 9am

  • Got one today (heaps at this store) at Penrith store (NSW) works well as our automatic machine died just before Christmas and was still in warranty so we are waiting for a refund before (maybe) getting another. Much better than shudder instant coffee!
    Thanks for the deal :)

  • just picked one up from southlands (VIC) - there were still about 8 on the shelf

  • Thanks OP, picked one up from Burwood NSW today, to use at work.
    There were about 30-40 left

  • Got 1 at Tuggeranong ACT today… about 10 left on shelf BUT the damn thing leaks :(.

Have to go back and swap it over, as it pee'd all over my benchtop.
Still worth it for $30, but I'm hoping the next one works ok.

    • Mine is also leaking. If I empty the water tank them it is okay.

  • YAY! I got 1 @ Footscray VIC whilst I was down there shopping yesterday afternoon. They had about 16 left. Mine does not leak one drop, and it makes coffee using the nespresso pods fine, faultlessly and quietly (I could not even taste the difference between its coffee and the branded nespresso delonghi essenza machine of mine—which was close to $200 =). And both of the machines look quite similar too, same specs even… 19 bar italian pump, auto off, variable extraction volume control by holding down the button, very similar drip tray assembly, water tanks.

  • Kippa Ring had about 30.

  • are they good machine's though?

Do different machines have different features?

    • They are a basic machine. The more expensive ones do things like additional cup sizes, automatic loading/ejection, come with milk frothers etc

  • can anyone comment if this is available in WA as well?

    • hi dr_rusko
confirming the same offer is also available in WA

  • +1

Machine is quite sturdy and better than expected for the Homemaker brand - a lot of their stuff is touch and go but this is a solid unit and doesn't feel cheap by any means. They obviously have a plethora of Chinese suppliers for their equipment and I'm happy to say they've chosen a decent one of their coffee machines - clearly not a long term venture though as they're running these out the door.

I can't compare to more expensive machines but others have commented it's very similar. I'm getting good results with Nespresso compatible pods (non original) and will be eager to try them too.

I would say that if I had paid around the $200 mark for a similar machine I'd be a little disappointed especially with the ongoing costs associated with pods. Will probably get some refillable pods once in a while and use Lavazza ground coffee with it just to see how it comes out.

Better experience than the drip machine and much easier to clean. Still think for large quantities of coffee the drip will be more efficient but for one or two cups this a good choice.

I only have gigantic mugs so they don't fit under the machine as expected, does anyone have a link to a cheap set of suitable coffee mugs? I'm thinking Ikea will be a place to check out but I've never looked for them so any suggestions welcomed.

Bought Piazza D'oro pods from Big W for $4.56 per box special till 02/01/2013.

Tried one of the coffee pod, the coffee was weak.

    • Which ones did you get. They vary in the strength of the flavour. I have a couple of variations of the 7 and they are strong enough for me. Maybe try a 10?

      • I tried the 4 yesterday, today I tried 7 or 10 taste much better.

  • Bought the original capsules at Nespresso shop. Try a free one inside the shop and prepare one at home with this machine, really can't tell the difference. Great bargain!

  • Doh. Only after a few days, mine appears not to work anymore. At least there is a return policy!

  • bought one of these on the weekend and i must say i am quite surprised at the quality of coffee that it produces. Used the Piazza D'oro pods (level 7 i think) and it came out a treat - nice crema as well.

also there are plenty left at Bankstown Kmart

  • Just bought one from Maddington WA had 4 on the shelf, mine doesnt seem to leak and if it does I think it needs some lube on the seal.

Price has $39 on the ticket but scans at $29.

One Problem, you need a SMALL cup grrr I bought the Piazza Doro Coffee on special at coles 2 for $10 (was next to Kmart, not driving BigW for a few cents cheaper)

    • Some people say they are noisy 0_0 um mine is quiet, very quiet, its not hugely powerful but lol its $29, make a few coffees and you get your moneys worth easy.
We bought it for work perfect for that :D My missus sometimes buys the milk Coffees but this should work out cheaper and nicer (with real coffee!!!)
The Piazza D'oro pods (level 7) are perfect for this machine I think.

  • Bought one from Casula Kamrt they have plenty left.
Are the Dolce Gusto Pods selling at Coles compatible with this machine?

    • No, only Nespresso and Nespresso compatible ones.

  • Didn't like the shiny stainless steel finish. Leakage is a worry. Maybe I could raid the office for Nespresso pods!

  • Got one in Sparkly Bear K-Mart in Brunswick a couple of days ago. They were still ticketed at $69, and there were about 15 left…

Grabbed a pack of Piazza D'Oro for $5 in Safeway too.

  • Got the last one at Kmart Southgate just now, then went to Coles and bought 2x10 piazza d'oro compatible capsules for $10 and i saw that Coles sells exactly the same coffee maker in red color(but i couldn't see the price)

    • +1

Yeah I saw the red version at Coles yesterday for $99, the exact same colored version at BIGW including its milk frother and the huge stand for both of them for $199. And the nespresso shop sold a matt plastic finish machine branded delonghi nespresso which looked 99% alike to this one for $279 dollars.

  • Question about milk frother, is it required? I am only used to drinking instant and I just pour cold milk in after the hot water…can I just do the same with this machine?

    • Yup. Frother only required if you like your milk fluffed up. Frothed milk takes up more room with less milk and can make the coffee feel creamier.

  • Questions for anyone experienced with this machine:

    1) how many times should you have to press the button on the right to fill a cup (which is already quite small just to fit under the dispenser)?

    2) if sometimes no water comes out and the noise is louder, is that an indication of a faulty machine?

    • +1

      1) I pressed and held down the lungo (big cup button) until it dispensed the amount of coffee I wanted which was 1 full cup of maximum size that could fit under the machine, and let go of the button to stop the dispensing. After letting go you would have reprogrammed the button for the machine to know to dispense the equal amount the next time you press the button. Note you could do the same to the smaller cup button. Short answer: Once whilst holding it down to reprogram the button.

      2) See how much water is left in the tank, is it above minimum? Is the water tank fitted correctly within the groove? Perhaps try to press and hold either buttons (without the capsule) to see if water is dispensed correctly whilst you have sufficient water (between max and min levels). When I use mine, it is only loud during the few seconds at start of dispensing the coffee.

      I hope that helps. =)

      • 1) I looked at the programming (hold down button) instruction but it seemed to be suggesting that the default level of water being dispensed was the "optimum" amount for a capsule. It's a very small amount of water.

        2) The tank was close to full but below Max. This was with no capsule, ie. just to rinse the machine as per instructions. As for noise, I suppose it's very subjective, but I've now tried 2 machines and both are what I'd call loud, kind of like a dentist drilling. Also with both machines, the cup shakes/vibrates while the water is being dispensed and moves around. Is that the same with yours?

        • Mine does vibrate the cup at the beginning with that sound and that may have caused the cup to move a teenie bit—but it does quieten down after a few seconds with less vibrations.

        • NB: I've just read that Nespresso have said, "The Nespresso Grands Crus capsules contain between 5 grams for the Espresso range and 7 grams for the Lungo range. Our Espresso coffees are designed for maximum enjoyment in a 40ml cup, while Lungo coffees are best enjoyed in a 110ml cup." … So yes it seems they are talking about small lungo cups - and it means the Kmart machine is actually dispensing approx the right amount for Nespresso's recommendations.

        • mine is very loud too, vibrating and shifting the cup when dispensing water.
I bought a box of Piazza intensity 7 from BigW to try, not bad coffee.

        • Mine is the same, it is much noisier when just running water through it (without a pod), I would describe it as a 'clunky' noise, but when a pod is inserted it is much quieter.

I have noticed that the coffee comes out pretty slowly, not trickling but not far from it. Is this normal?

I am used to a big cup of coffee but with this machine/pod system it only works for small cups. I tried to add more water and it turned out too weak.

        • +1

yes I think they probably all vibrate the cup, unfortunately - if anyone has one that doesn't vibrate the cup, please post.

As for the volume of coffee, that is another thing that may not have been very fleshed out in this Thread.

          Nespresso say:

"When brewing an espresso capsule it is not recommended to run more than 40 ml through any one capsule as this will result in negative (bitter) aromas in the cup, known as "over extraction". If you are interested in a larger cup of coffee but not necessarily a stronger one, we encourage you to try an "americano", which is an espresso shot with hot water added (eject the capsule and brew a "blank" shot)."

"Furthermore, you may try our lungos range. Lungo, which translates to "long" in Italian, refers to a style of espresso which is larger than the traditional 40 ml size. Our lungo capsules contain 20-25% more ground coffee. You can thus brew a taller cup of espresso with a single capsule. A traditional lungo is poured to 110 ml. Lungos are also recommended if you are looking for a more substantial amount of coffee."

So this machine, if used with Nespresso caps, is really for espresso shots or smaller cups of coffee. If you want anything over 110ml (which is still small) and want to avoid over-extraction (and possible bitterness) you should either add water or warm milk.

        • Thanks for that maverick, clears it up for me :)

        • btw, if you want to stop any vibration, just place a folded paper towel under the cup

  • $69 at kmart woy woy (nsw central coast)

    • Weird… Did you check using the self-scanner to see what price it scans as?

    • Thats the kambrook one, not capsules, i think

Emohome 4th generation reusable pods (with stainless steel filters) can be found on eBay and Aliexpress. I grind my own beans and have found it takes trial and error to get the right grind setting and right amount of tamping to get a nice crema.

    Advantages
    - can use any coffee flavour in them
    - environmentally friendly

    Disadvantages
    - limited use as they start to melt
    - need to let the pod cool if making 2 cups of coffee consecutively
    - trial and error to get the taste right (too little coffee and the water runs through the pod too fast, too fine a grind and water trickles through)
    - manufacturer states that you can reuse the pods 30 times, this maybe optimistic
    - bit fiddly to refill

  • Pods at Woolies are no longer on special as of today, just as I was about to buy some :( where is the best place to buy them at regular prices?

    • I got mine from Coles - Piazza D'oro 2 boxes for $10. Not sure if still onspecial, but mnormal price is around $5.50 I think anyway?

  • Kmart Kurralta Park had close to 100 of them this morning @ $29 each.

  • So guys how does the Nespresso caps taste in this machine compared to the delonghi machines?

    • +2

I also have a nespresso delonghi essenza machine as well as this and they make coffee with the exact crema, texture, taste, aroma with the same nespresso capsule-I just can't get over the fact for the price I payed for the delonghi I could have bought six of these machines.

  • Thanks for the post purchase from Westfield Southland, VIC and there are a few left.
Also visited Chadstone and they have plenty.

  • Bought one from southland last sunday. Thanks OP
Using a coffee plunger to make frothy milky sorta works (I guess).

  • Ikea sells a $3 milk frother, runs on AA batteries. Watched a few youtubes and it works at least, not sure how well though.
    http://www.ikea.com/au/en/catalog/products/30191649/

  • Thanks OP got one from Chatswood. Tempted to get two for gift/whatever but stick with one. The guy tried to convinced me a machine at this price will break quickly. Whateva…..

    • for the first time tried a pod coffee at home bought piazza level 10… YUCK!!!!!!!!! I hope nespresso taste better than that!!!! Now I have to cope with the other 9 :((((

  • +1

We bought the $29 milk frother from Woolworths…

Pod machine is running great and for the price wow.

I bought a heater part for my Delonghi coffee machine not long age and that cost me $100 lol

    • Did exactly the same for the milk :D
the frother isnt great, but get what you paid for

  • Bought 2 last night. Might give one to a friend or keep it in the office.

I got the '7' and '10' Piazza D'oro pods for a test. Can't say im a big fan. Will try grabbing some of the officeworks ones tonight.
The machine itself is certainly worth the $29 i paid. Hardly a risk at all.

Do people have experiences/opinions with the other misc. online stores ie. espressoland pods etc?
Finally, do you need to be a member to buy nespresso pods or can i just walk in and buy directly from the stores?

    • anyone can just walk in.

  • I got one from chatswood.
There were plenty of stocks, 30 or 40.

  • Just picked one up from Kmart at Marion shopping centre.
Got some pods at woolworths; if it's any good it will pay for itself after the first pack of pods.

  • Got one from Kmart Northland Shopping Centre.

  • Espressoland pods work fine and taste good too - ask nicely and they may give you a few freebies of other flavours with your order.

Other places to buy D'Oro pods is eBay. Nespresso pods don't seem to be very competitively priced on eBay though - it will take some hunting to find a good bargain.

  • They have only 8 left on display at KMart on Burwood Highway.

  • We have a Nespresso machine - can this use the Dolce Gusto capsules?

    • No, they are different and have different machines for them.

  • I much prefer the Cafe Vergnano officeworks brand to the Woolies D'Oro pods.

  • Does anyone know if they have any stock left in WA?

    • Quite a few at Warwick, got one today.

  • Still heaps at Kmart Broadway (NSW) yesterday. Like they had new stock brought in.

  • Are these selling for 29 dollars still?

    • I think so If you can find any, I havent seen one on the shelves for a while.

  • Got one from Tuggeranong(ACT) Kmart for $29 today. It seems they have got new stock now.

  • There is about 30 units at Kmart Shellharbour, if anyone is interested. I just bought one home, and am VERY pleased with the quality.

  • Bought one to taste test ours against the opposition. Can't say I'm a fan of pods in general but i do have a commercial espresso machine at home and work so a bit biased.
5g is a miniscule amount of coffee, a single basket is generally around 7 and a double is 14but can be up to 21! That said this machine is excellent quality for the price, especially compared to the crap that kmart normally passes off for home maker.
