Have this one, can recommend :)

Would yalls recommend it if im only after long black coffees? I personally don’t care for milk in coffee, and to me it’s another part that will probably be a pain in the ass to clean.

    • +2

Yes I would, you can make a double shot coffee with more water than normal and then add hot water using the hot water button to get to the desired volume!

Cleaning does take a while (as I typically double clean it each time) but is largely an automated process and doesn't need to be cleaned often (maybe once every 3 -6 months) depending on usage ofc.

      • Cheers mate!

If you're big on just black coffee, I'd suggest trying filtered coffee machine. For example something like this https://amzn.asia/d/iRwf9VK

They're no nonsense machines and make good, bold coffee. Simple clean up too if you use filter bags.

Any cheap one will be pretty decent. I've had expensive breville precision brewer and it wasn't as good as the one I linked. It has many features, but poor heat. Went through two during the first year and got a refund under warranty.

The only feature I specifically looked for was a timer, so I can prep everything at night and wake to my coffee for work.

          Just my 2c

          • @generalpayne: Cheers might give that a go instead, i usually will have 4-5 cups a day. Then maybe a monster , or preworkout.

            • +1

@Jimothy Wongingtons: Most models will have a warming plate. You can get ones with insulated carafes too, as the warming plate is meant to make it a bit bitter.

But most models can also brew 12 cups at once (around 6 normal size cups).

I'd recommend grabbing one off marketplace to try for $15 or so and see how you go. The breville aroma was my first one and I really enjoyed it. They're simple systems and might work for what you're after. If you prefer to go back to an espresso or similar, at least you have over invested into a filter machine. Admittedly, the taste is a bit different, but you'll find it's usually a smoother, more rounded flavour. They're not as popular since they don't really work well with frothed milk. For example, a latte is a concentrated shot of coffee and the rest frothed milk, whereas filtered coffee isn't concentrated,so you'll either have a really weak coffee or little to no milk.

            • @Jimothy Wongingtons: Pam keeping you up at night, Jim?

            • +1

@Jimothy Wongingtons: Makes ten cups but you better finish them in a few hours. Maybe male 4 cups at a time.
Reviews usually say that stewed coffee tastes horrible.

I drink a lot of black coffee, can recommend the base model of this machine - Series 1200 (EP1224) or Series 2200 (EP2221). These are all basically the same machine, but don't have the "LatteGo" milk add-on, but do have a steam wand to froth milk if you need to entertain friends! The steam wand works well.
This was on offer a few days back: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/891420

I prefer espresso machine coffee over filter coffee even for black coffee. a couple of cups of filter coffee makes me feel queezy, particularly if it's been sitting on a warming plate for hours.

    • only after long black coffees

Do you mean an espresso-based long black, or just a black coffee in general?

I'd just get an espresso machine if you only drink espresso and don't care about the milk. There are so many good options available for far cheaper than this, and you get more control over the brewing process (e.g. grind size, extraction time, ratios…etc.) than you would with a fully automatic machine. Also much simpler, less electronics, will probably last much longer.

If you just want to brew black coffee in general, I'd suggest either a French press or a filter coffee machine. I generally find that the "automatic" filter coffee machines tend to make more bitter coffee (though I'm not certain why). You definitely get less bitterness from a French press, more similar to a direct pour-over, or drip coffee.

  • My standards are dropping without a working machine. I wonder if I should abandon my plans for a new Breville Dual Boiler, and just pick up this instead? Is dual boiler really 3 or 4 times better than this?

    • I wouldn't say 3-4 times better, it's definitely a luxury compared to this value offering. I have the single boiler and if mine broke tomorrow I'd buy this Philips one.

Thanks. Had a BES870BSS for years. Probably broke down maybe a year back now. Is likely cry if I added up how much I'd spent on take away coffee since then so I should make a move soon. Regret not jumping on a recent deal here direct from Breville but I think it was during a week that we were hemorrhaging cash on things like 4x international return flights. I'll keep my eyes peeled though 🙂

        • Have a peek on FBMP, sometimes a diamond in the rough pops up.

  • +1

We have this one at work, really not a fan of the frothed milk it makes, its very very airy and big bubbles. I might just be too picky though

    • Yeah seems like there's not a lot of customisation options. But I guess they need to up sell you to the more expensive machines somehow :)

  • +2

Hmmm this or 3 years of Nescafé Vanilla Latte sachets for the same price?

    • +1

I wouldn’t take 3 years of coffee sachets if I was paid $399

  • Would this be sufficient for a few years? I was saving for the next Breville Oracle sale.

    • +1

Yep. Mine has been in service for about 5 years with daily use.

  • Regarding the 90 days money back guarantee:

    • Thanks, removed the link now.

    • Return postage will cost a bomb though for such a large and heavy item

  • Is there any easy customisation to make flat whites/lattes with this?

  • $16 cheaper than previously, nice.

    this or bambino plus?

    • +1

I was about to ask the same question. Only problem is that the bambino plus is going for $500 at the moment, even though it's lowest is around the $400 like a few months ago

      • +2

I swapped from bambino to this.
I think this is much better value and would only go for the bambino if it was around half the cost of this.

        • Bambino standard or the plus?

          • +1

            @original15: Standard
I should say on a good day coffee from the bambino would be better than the phillips, but I'm probably not skilled enough in its use (and was using pre-ground coffee) so my results from the bambino were very hit and miss. The phillips is just so consistent and much more convenient.

            • @tomlikesbeetroot: Appreciate this detail, thank you
Planning on getting a small machine for my folks, old man would use a self frothing milk function so was curious this vs the plus which has that feature

              • @original15: The milk on this is very frothy cappucino style, no other options.
I don't mind it, but if you prefer flat white then this might not be perfect.

                • @tomlikesbeetroot: I should have pulled trigger on the bambino plus before Xmas
Now to wait forever for a good deal

  • Showing $494 for me??

  • +1

Have a read on reddit, some people think it produces watery espresso due to the small puck size

    • +1

I concur. The espresso is acceptable but absolutely lacks any body.
I like the machine and does a good enough job for our coffee needs and it's quick and reliable, but I'm secretly hoping it will die at some point so I can spend big on something that gives a really nice espresso…

    • +1

It’s absolutely fine, just adjust the grind size setting to 1-3. You get significantly better results.

  • Available again.

  • How is latte or cappuccino on it? I like milky cafe like coffee?

    • I would like to know too

  • i use this everyday.. can recommend this highly !

  • how is this compare to capsule coffee, such as nespresso?
i assume long run would be cheaper?

    • +1

I think so. If you buy cheap beans which cost about $15 (medium roast from Coles or Aldi) you would get between 100-142 coffees. So 15c a coffee or even less. I think capsules are much more expensive.

    • I think it is cheaper in the short run as a Nespresso costs more with auto- steamer cost more.

  • +1

Anyone using this one? I need some advice.
If drink coffee 1-3 shot a day would you recommend this or just stick with capsule coffee machine?

    • +1

Hi, I bought a 1200 one about 3 weeks ago (very similar but the milk frother is separate). We love it in my family but there are 3 of us using it. So it really depends on how many coffees. We probably make beetween 5-10 coffees a day. Loving it so far, very good machine.

      • Hi Fozzie, Thank you so much for your opinion

        • You are welcome. Bear in mind if you buy coffee beans at around $15 a kilo depending on strenght will cost between 10-15c a cup. So much cheaper than pods, then think whether is worth it. Also it's a pretty big machine compared to capsules I think.

  • heard some comments online saying the milk frother creates too much foam
is there any settings to set foam level?

    • Unfortunately, no, although it makes a very decent coffee/espresso

    • Yeah it's not cafe quality foam, big bubbles. I got this knowing from the comments and pictures though. I'm having cappuccinos from it - they could be better, but good enough for me for the quick and easy factor.

  • Day 2645 of looking for a relatively cheap standalone electric milk steamer.

  • I picked this deal up.
Does anyone else's seem to drip throughout the day while off?
I catch the start-up and shut-down purges, but there always seems to be a fair bit of water in the tray when I come back for another.
Just found this article, will pay closer attention if actually leaking overnight. https://www.philips.com.au/c-t/XC000004110/my-philips-espres…
