Anyone has any luck taking the blade out to sharpen it? It doesn't come out easily and the widest opening setting doesn't allow access to the blade for even a tiny sharpening stone. Hate to throw stuff like this out that could otherwise last for years.

I have the more expensive version and it’s the first OXO product that doesn’t work. The blade is dull out of the box and will not even cut onions cleanly.

    • I agree. I usually love OXO stuff, but this was a miss. The standard Benriner Japanese mandoline I got has been going strong for years.

      • Woah. The Japanese ones are $50 ~ $100! Better get it on CCC and watch it

        • Benriner owner here … While the blade is easily removable, properly re-sharpening it might be too involved for most. Unless you're already "invested", I suggest buying half a dozen OXOs instead

I've found mine very sharp and very good for the price.

      • Can confirm. Cut the tip of my thumb off with it.

Always use the guard handle btw

        • Literally my biggest fear with these and the only reason i don't own one lol

          • @Denaz: Oh yeah it was rough. The skin has healed but it’s still rough to touch because I think there’s exposed nerves or something

      • Which one? The handheld, like in this post, or the traditional one (which is what johnliew is mentioning)

The reviews on the handheld one are pretty stellar, the real question is whether or not you need the Kevlar gloves.

Sorry and I forgot to mention that the blade on my model was not removable.

  • Just get a food processor

    • Agreed.

    • How do you make scalloped potatoes using a good processor?

      Or finely slice and onion?

        • I've got a larger Kenwood food processor, the throat is too small for even a medium sized potato. Plus three different thicknesses on the oxo, infinite on a benriner…

          • @Fullhalter: I just can't go back after having a food processor 2bh.

Enjoy your manual slicer I guess, just not for me

  • Cheers OP, never used one due to my fear of losing a finger… but at that price i can afford to lose one or two

    • I used it today, but also ordered some cut resistant gloves.

I don't think any gloves are necessary tbh, you use the guard thingy when required.
