Sony PlayStation 5 Pro Console $1198 & $119.80 Back as Gift Card + Delivery @ Harvey Norman

620

One day deal only. GC is only valid for a month. It's not easy getting 10% off console prices, so this is ~$120 discount that can be used to buy games / peripherals. You should also be able to use already owned gift cards for the initial purchase.

Please don't go off on rants about how Gerry drinks the blood of Satan, or nobody should ever pay this much for a gaming console. I've heard it all before but IF you are among those who want one of these it seems like a very solid deal to me. If you're not in the market for one then that's just fine, I really don't need to hear all the reasons why.

The one reservation I do have is that stock levels seem a bit tricky to be 100% clear on. If you're unlucky they may need to order the console in or get it delivered to you which would delay things by a day or two.

Holy heck, is that how much a PS5 Pro costs? For a marginal benefit of improved resolution and frames, while missing out on having a disc drive requiring re-purchase of your games library or 'optional' purchase of a further disc drive? Complete madness. I'll upvote deal for visibility but damn that is a lot to pay.

      • +48

Eh, it's a fair comment. May convince someone to look at PS5 Slim instead which is better value for money.

          • +4

@MEGASERVE: cheaper = badder, wow where do you want your nobel prize

        • +18

Absolutely a fair comment, Im still wondering why I purchased a PS5 as it was definitely not ground breaking tech from the PS4 Pro I had.

          • +1

            @BatmanAU: …to play Gran Turismo 7.

            Oh wait…

          • -8

@BatmanAU: It is a fair comment that Toyota Driver would say about a Merc lol
I can see the issue here, most spend years to buy their PS5 with all the discount codes and all, and for them getting a PS5 Pro would take light years :)

And I'm still on PS4, as I don't play many games.

            • +2

@boomramada: Ahh commenting on a PS5 thread and making judgement having not even owned one, nor playing many games.

So keep waving your fist at those kids playing noisily across the road and leave the discussion to those who own the products.

          • @BatmanAU: Diminishing returns

          • -1

@BatmanAU: There are over 100 PS5 games, supporting 120hz, this is what the PS5 is for. Try harder next time!

            • @Justin9mm: I said it wasn’t ground breaking from the PS4 Pro champ, but good try for a Friday, Gold Star.

              • -1

@BatmanAU: That in itself is ground breaking for a console, and get your own comeback, what are you 12!? LOL

                • @Justin9mm: Wow, you’re easily impressed.

                  • -1

@BatmanAU: You still here? Why not go play Spiderman which you got it as a free copy with your Ps5? 😉

        • +1

Some how he upvoted, so it seemed unnecessary lol

      • +5

Very fair comment, i thought exactly the same thing when i saw this.

      • +1

        Oh the irony

      • +6

        How is it unnecessary?

Spending $1k plus on a console and being forced to buy expensive digital games is not a bargain.

        • I’d happily pay $1k IF it came with a disc drive included in the cost.

You can probably get a better PC for that price, but the PS5 Pro is the most powerful gaming device that can still play games on physical media.

Other than that, modern home consoles don’t have much going for them, and I’d jump to PC if they all go digital only.

        • Except you're not forced to buy digital games, as a disc drive is available?

          • @magic8ballgag: Can you share a buying link to the thing? cos availability looks non-existent.

Consumers are already paying more than $1k. It's not expensive for Sony to include it in the package. It's reminiscent of the HD-DVD drive add on for the xbox.

          • +1

@magic8ballgag: It’s (somewhat) excusable for a mid-gen Pro version, but if the PS6 comes without a disc drive by default, it will signal to publishers that people will buy digital games only, which will accelerate the decline of physical media on consoles.

Turns out your comment was the unnecessary one.

I agree with you except upvoting for visibility. Bury this shit.

    • THIS! I thought it was a typo, having been lucky enough to score a PS5 Disc for $500 during a eBay flash deal. $1k in this economy is outrageous.

    • +3

60FPS without having to drop to 2010 era resolutions is nice I have to say.

It's definitely expensive for what we are used to paying for consoles, probably back around the PS3 launch price + inflation, but just look at how much GPUs have gone up in price over the last 10 years.

    • +1

PS5 will be five years old this year. A generation is what, six years? So we'll probably get the PS6 next year.

      • +3

PS gens have been 7 years, so probably PS6 late 2027

      • +4

No way we'll get the PS6 next year. Not a chance.

Last gen was 7 years and this generation is likely to be longer than that.

        • Agreed, even the PS5 launched 4y after the PS4 pro

      • -1

There is zero chance for PS6 to appear next year. Best bet at least 4-5 years away. They will need to make money off PS5 pro that just came out to make it worthwhile.

This is the unfortunate result of Microsoft giving up on the Xbox in 2013 and PlayStation having no competition since. I'm still so angry about the Xbox One. What a waste.

      • What was wrong with it?

        • +2

They advertised it as a box for watching American football on TV, and not a videogame device, so everyone rightfully gave up on it.

          • @MrMcHairyHead: That is a long time to be angry. I agree, when I got into gaming a few years ago, the Xbox seemed a bit more obscure, so I naturally got into the PS4 system.

On an unrelated note, currently I use my PS5 to watch movies/TV shows on Amazon Prime because the PS5's Prime app runs so much smoother than TV's native Prime app.

          • @MrMcHairyHead: I think all of gaming kinda fell off after the PS1/N64 era, definitely by the time the PS2/GameCube era was over.

    • +2

This is what I came here to say - holy hell this is expensive! You could get an RTX 4060 gaming PC for the same money.

      • I mean, you can, but then you need $180 for a Windows licence, you need a mouse and a keyboard, probably want a monitor.

And at the end of that, you have a PC, not a console.

Edit: Not saying a PC is better or worse than a console, but they both provide different experiences in terms of ease of use, options, versatility.

        • +5

          ever hear of Steam OS?
          ever hear of Windows keys?

aint nobody ever paid $180 for windows.

          • @raybies: That's what it costs on the link above to add an installed copy of Windows 11 Home to that 4060 equipped gaming PC, so I went with that. If you want something you can plug in and it'll (mostly) work, that's what you'd be charged.

What I know about SteamOS after a minute on google is from their website: "Users should not consider SteamOS as a replacement for their desktop operating system."

If the comment above had talked about buying a SteamDeck instead of a Switch I'd say you had a point.

            • +1

@McFodder: If anybody pays $180 for windows they need to hand in their Ozbargain badge.
Add the world's cheapest mouse and keyboard, get an xbox-like controller from somewhere and get it to boot into Steam Big Picture mode, you basically have the most backward compatible console of all time then

              • @Gorby: It's years since I've set up a PC - if you source a key elsewhere what would you pay, and then how long to get it activated or installed?

                • +2

@McFodder: Installed is pretty quick off a usb. Like an hour to download and install I guess if you didn't have it ready?
Windows is free if you just don't activate it (and you live with the watermark of shame).
If you already own a Windows 10 key somewhere then that's transferable (in many cases) and the upgrade is free.
Otherwise pick your price starting from $7 odd to buy a third party key that fits somewhere along a sliding scale of dodginess.

            • +1

@McFodder: the general hardware release of Steam O/S is due this year and I'm tipping it'll be a major replacement for all those windows 10 gamers being left unsupported (plus the majority of gamers on steam run windows 10 already). Steam o/s is linux based and pressing f1 will bring up a normal GUI desktop where you could run MS Office in your browser, youtube etc. so it may be a legit replacement desktop o/s for a large number of users. The drawpoint for steam o/s of course is the 6' interface designed to be used on a tv, with a controller (not keyboard and mouse), same as the console home menus etc.

              • +1

@gizmomelb: So would you run it on a PC without needing a Windows install once it hits general release?

                • @McFodder: yes, it steam os has desktop mode as well - https://youtu.be/tdR-bxvQKN8?t=788 though it is locked down and limits to only allowing apps installed via flatpak. Though for the vast majority of users - install discord, vlc, firefox/chrome and 7zip and you can do all your web browsing, email, O365 apps etc. via browser as that's all they ever use.

            • @McFodder: SteamOS is not a desktop replacement; it's an OS designed for gaming.
I personally use Ghost Spectre Superlite or Windows-X-Lite on my gaming machine. I’m not even asked for a key, and I frequently wipe the boot drive.
Installing Windows takes about 6 minutes, and running my fix-up PowerShell script takes 20 seconds.

Back when I used a PS4, every single time I had an hour a week free to play, I’d need to update the firmware and then the game—rinse and repeat.

Now I can spend my 1hr aimlessly looking for inscriptions in Indiana Jones :)

              • @raybies: So it doesn't solve the need for a Windows installation for most people then? Sounds like you've got it down to a fine art, but most people won't be that tech savvy.

Since getting my PS5 I'd say I've had a system update maybe every 6 weeks or so, and most of these are minor and done in a few minutes. Game patches obviously depend on what you're playing, but what you're saying sounds like me when I turn on my gaming laptop - friends decide to play something I can't join them on on my PS5 so I start up the laptop and need to update Steam, then the game, then discord, and that's if no Windows security updates or updated drivers have been found.

                • @McFodder: Windows installation is faster than the firmware update Sony forces on you on day one (based on my PS4 experience).
With AI, there’s no excuse not to implement more sophisticated scripting these days.

Most services, like Defender, Updates, and their dependencies, are stripped from my gaming machine. I simply wipe and reinstall the latest build every 3 to 9 months.

The PowerShell script sets up my registry, drivers, desktop, shortcuts, and taskbar items, enabling me to use shortcut keys like Win+1, etc. This also shuts down the PC and triggers a webhook to cut the power, allowing me to turn it back on with voice control.

It can literally all be done while brushing your teeth.

            • @McFodder: If you have to Google all this then maybe sharing your lengthy opinions on the matter is not at all helpful to other people.

              • +1

@The Maestro: Someone suggested a PC as an alternative to the console in this deal, I think the fact there's a fair bit of knowledge needed to make it competitive is worth factoring in when not everyone has been in the PC space for years.

        • +2

Mouse and keyboard are like 10$ and you can play most games with a controller on a TV. I play plenty of PC games that way.

      • +1

Different markets though. I would be far more likely to buy a PS5 Pro for gaming, than a PC, because I don't enjoy gaming on PC, i like the "it just works" approach of a console. I used my PC for gaming for the first time in many years recently for Indiana Jones, and am very keen to never have to use it for gaming again. I have owned a PC more capable than my PS5 for the whole four years I have had it, but PC gaming just isn't for me, so I use the PS5.

        • +1

Did you use a controller with your PC?

          • +1

@BatmanAU: Yes I did, and the controller experience mostly worked well, it's not about the game itself, it's about the friction before hand. Driver updates, settings tweaks etc, it's a lot less "it just works"

            • @witheredcouch: Yeah definitely a lot easier pressing the on button and bingo you’re on. I find at least you can use the PC for a huge variety of other things, but I’m like you, I prefer the ease of the console as I have both anyway.

            • @witheredcouch: that's my experience with my PS5 - every time I go to use it first there's a system update, then game updates and by the time they apply I've lost interest.

              • @gizmomelb: you need to set your ps5 to auto update in rest mode, that way it does it automatically, but yeah, i know what you mean, i don't understand how you can buy a game on day 1 release, take it home, and it already needs an update before you can play it

              • @gizmomelb: As mentioned by the above poster, it updates during rest mode. Disc games till unfortunately need to update, but in those cases i get my partner to put it in while I'm at work (she works from home), and by the time I get home the update has auto installed.

I also find being able to decide I want to play a game, pick it in the app, and by the time I finish work it is downloaded and installed on the console, ready to play, no waiting for updates.

    • Don’t forget it has a really bad exclusive games library. This generation has been an unmitigated disaster for Sony, all stemming back to the scalping kerfuffle and no one being able to actually buy one for a good 18 months.

    • This is still cheaper than building a PC similer PS 5 Pro. Here is a example, https://www.newsweek.com/entertainment/how-build-ps5-pro-equ… And this is in USD.

So he didn't? Genuinely don't know. People seem to hate him here but why…

          • @DeToxin: everyone bludged off covid, if you were eligable to get any money, you would of taken it, don't pretend to be high and mighty

            • @Qazxswec: The only equivalent situation I could think of for me is, if I somehow managed to get jobseeker payments even though I was able to work through the lockdowns. In which case I definitely wouldn't take that money.

And now he is sulking about Temu and Shein!

  • +24

Hold off if you're not in a rush to get one. These didn't sell very well judging by the fact that at no point since launch did any Australian retailers run out of stock, including Amazon. Even now, if you check your local EB and JB stores, you'll see most stores have stock.

I reckon Sony are going to want to drop prices soon to get these things moving.

    • +5

Not sure if they can while the YEN/AUD are where they are.

      • +3

Better than stock sitting there unsold.

        • Not necessarily, but with Sony you might be right as they could just cut prices on the PS5 Pro, then raise prices on another product to cover it.

          • +1

@BatmanAU: If PSVR2 is any guide they discount hard on abandoned hardware

            • @Gorby: Never owned or used on, but wasn’t it the lack of games that killed the PSVR?

              • @BatmanAU: Chicken and egg, lack of games, lack of players, take your pick

        • +1

Yep the Money is In the Digital Market Place , a sweet 30% of every digital sale. Let PS5's out there means less of an audience that you can monetise. People need to avoid this PS5 Pro, only then will Sony respond to reducing its price to meet the market. Also not having an Optical drive is a real K0K blocker. Just wait it out folks theres no need for anyone to buy this right now , it needs to come down to the 700-800 AUD mark (with Optical drive) to be worth peoples money and time

          • @H3R34TH4C0MM3NTS: If you're waiting for it to be priced lower than the Slim is currently, while most consoles are getting price rises, I think you'll be waiting a long time.

    • +2

Well said. I knew this wouldn't sell out and called it before launch day. The price is a piss take to say the least.

      • +1

Just like their game catalogue and tier pricing

    • +1

PS5 Pro is outselling the PS4 Pro during the same time period. Beyond vocal ridicule from general public, it's selling fine for the target niche market & exceeding Sony's expectations. Same as the Portal.
