Sony PlayStation 5 Pro Console $1198 & $119.80 Back as Gift Card + Delivery @ Harvey Norman

620

One day deal only. GC is only valid for a month. It's not easy getting 10% off console prices, so this is ~$120 discount that can be used to buy games / peripherals. You should also be able to use already owned gift cards for the initial purchase.

Please don't go off on rants about how Gerry drinks the blood of Satan, or nobody should ever pay this much for a gaming console. I've heard it all before but IF you are among those who want one of these it seems like a very solid deal to me. If you're not in the market for one then that's just fine, I really don't need to hear all the reasons why.

The one reservation I do have is that stock levels seem a bit tricky to be 100% clear on. If you're unlucky they may need to order the console in or get it delivered to you which would delay things by a day or two.

Arguably the gaming population is bigger in 2024 than eight years ago in 2016, so this aligns with expectation.

      • It helps that Microsoft is dogshit so Sony has a monopoly and can dictate their prices at will.

    • they did run out of stock a little, i couldnt get one from my local store, but i got one close by, but yesh, nothing like the ps5, not even close

  • +8

not sure if fair price today, but in 2008 paid $850 for the ps3 metal gear bundle :D

    • wow

    • Old PS3 was a masterpiece though and it shows. I can sell my original PS3 right now for $600, can't say that about many other retro consoles.

      • +3

how can you sell it for $600 when theyre $100-200 on ebay?

        • +3

The original launch PS3 played PS2 games, which is very desirable vs using an upscaler etc

(They also had various hardware fault like the YLOD / dead disk drives which makes survivors worth more. )

      • +5

PS3 original launch 60gb is the climax of console tech with rich feature sets.

Every console prior and after it is not even close.

        • Sadly the price was too high for the economy at the time, which Sony couldn't have predicted.

Had it been rewarded with good sales, console development could've permanently changed for the better

        • +1

It was also unnecessarily complicated which is why it’s hard to emulate and future consoles haven’t touched the PS3 library

      • what?? no you can't, ive got an original ps3, it aint worth sh*t!! if it is, i'll tell you what, you can have it for $300, i'll let you double your money

    • You know what's crazy, I'm pretty sure the PS2 was like $750 at launch in 2000!!!

    • A basket of goods and services valued at $850 in calendar year 2008, would in calendar year 2023 cost $1,245.35

$999 with the disc drive and I MIGHT consider it.

    • +1

      @FujinShu this is the way.

It’s straight up disappointing to be locked into the pricing of digital store games (which can be revoked at any moment and cannot be resold) — not least to leave your games library behind and/or have to buy a disc drive to restore functionality.

  • Gaming PC would be cheaper.

    • +4

not really, but PC is more versitle

    • If you're not into PS exclusives, many games are on PC. Plus if you desire PSVR2, now there is a PC adapter

      • What PS exclusives are left?

        • +1

One comes to mind are the Gran Tirismo series

    • +1

      Hmm with nvidia 50 series?

Absolute waste of money for some extra pixels you can't see on the 4 exclusive games

  • +10

I got the ps5 pro a few months back. It is overpriced and around x2 price of a ps5 slim but not double the performance. Also you need an Oled tv with 120hz VRR to take advantage of the upgraded performance of the Pro. Like most higher end hardware, there is diminishing returns at the top end.

    • Upvoted for your feedback.

What’s your thoughts on having to use the digital store?

Did you end up buying the disc drive in order to preserve your games/watch movies/buy games at a more affordable price outside of digital store?

For me that’s the most painful part of the decision Sony have made here, feels anti-consumer and anti-gamer tbh.

      • +3

I'm not the op, but I specifically waited til EB/JB started getting stock again (in the last week) normally without some paywall. I pre ordered in store at JB a week ago, got a text the next day, bought a PS5 Pro after trading in an old unused OG ps4, 3 games i bought cheap from CEX (worth for the tradein bump at EB) and my own PS5.

The PS5 is still a solid console, and unless you need/want the best possible experience you can get for a PS5, stick with the base console. But, I've bought pretty much all PS consoles at this point, including the Ps4 Pro, so It's just something I'm happy to do. It's certainly a luxury purchase, and is not considered good value in the slightest.

        • +1

Yep definitely a luxury purchase. I mean the performance upgrades are definitely there with upgraded graphics and smoother frame rates (with the right games only) but value isn’t there. People who buy high end electronics don’t always look at value anyways.

        • +2

I've actually been overjoyed with the Pro.

I wanted to trade in my Disc PS5 for it because I've never been able to afford the best console of a generation, and for once I felt that I was able to.

But I agonised for ages because all the scuttlebutt (see this thread and the rest of the internet) was that it was a weaksauce overpriced offer from a cynical company seeking to fleece its customer base.

One day a couple weeks back I just decided to go for it, and honestly I don't think I could be happier. I don't think it's dropped a single frame since I've owned it. It's the most stable console, in terms of performance, that I've ever owned by far. It's silent and it just manhandles every game I've loaded up at the exact target framerate (60 or 120fps) that the developer intended.

Once more devs start opening up their code and pushing enhanced edition updates to try and get a bit more life out of older games (stuff that had 'resolution' modes that still haven't been updated to target a higher frame rate than 30), this thing's going to really start showing what it's made of.

To your comment about 'value', this really depends on how you define that term. If the measure of value is $ for exact performance when compared to an equivalent PC, the Pro is going to lose every time. If value = satisfaction with the unit doing exactly what I want out of a console, with ease, every time it's asked to do that, then as long as it can manage to keep that up for 3-4 more years, I'll be saying it was pretty damn good value.

          • +1

@IPYF: Fair enough! Yeah I just want the best PS experience for the generation, so I was always gonna upgrade at some point!

Was starting a replay of LOU2 on the PS5 before I upgraded, and now I get the smooth ~100fps in the 4k PSSR mode, and it's definitely way more crisp than base PS5 performance mode. Looks amazing, runs so well. Hope they just optimise games better in future..

          • @IPYF: cheers @IPYF

Did you end up buying the disc drive in order to preserve your games/watch movies/buy games at a more affordable price outside of digital store?

            • +1

@tommypickles: I don't have a drive yet and I'm not paying a scalper. When they become available again I'll get one through normal channels for a reasonable price. For me this is a non-issue. I have a huge digital backlog. I'm not running out of stuff to play anytime soon. I acknowledge this isnt true of everyone.

              • +1

@IPYF: Looks like quite a lot of JBs have gotten more stock in, might be worth a check locally.

          • +1

@IPYF: The value is in Ps5 Pro being able to play AAA games at 60hz with enhanced visual upgrades. You get to put the expensive OLED you bought to good use and just simply enjoy the experience.

Those who expect double the performance or visual upgrades to justify the double price will be left very disappointed though.

          • @IPYF: I’m waiting for SEGA to update their games to take advantage of this extra power, but SEGA just doesn’t focus on optimising games for anything other than PC and Switch (Metaphor: ReFantazio, Shadow Generations).
The least they could’ve done is add an uncapped framerate option.

        • Cheers @ReaperX22

Did you end up buying the disc drive in order to preserve your games/watch movies/buy games at a more affordable price outside of digital store?

          • @tommypickles: Correct. I bought the disc drive. I won't use the digital store unless major sale or something cheap like an Indie game. Sales seem to be more prominent overseas digitally. Here it makes no sense to go digital only unless you just ceebs physical media anymore and are willing to pay the premium

      • +1

It was a pain to get a disk drive for my Pro. I ended up buying a slim console with disk drive, installed the drive into pro, then sold off console as digital for cheap. Saves me having to pay scalpers for the disk drive and allows a buyer to get a digital console for cheaper. Win-win all round.

    (profanity) Gerry Harvey.

The console is ‘’useless’’ if you don’t have a good enough quality tv to go with it.

Playing this console on a tiny monitor or cheap tv is WTF.

    • Thats true. However, most who buys a Pro would own a Oled anyways right? Who owns a cheap led tv with a Pro?

      • I’ve sadly seen a few folks using it on a cheap 1080p 55” Kogan tv and some 23” 1080p monitors

        • Those are the ones who bitch about the ps5 pro haha. Cringe

  • +3

I can't be sure about other JB stores but the one in Hornsby will match this Harvey deal and will give you 10% non-expiry gift card.

      Why not?

We buy random crap from here wherever it's from because the price is good

Love buying an overpriced console that 99.9% of the population will never notice a difference between the standard model.

    • +1

      Gerry loves you too

      • Both Usernames something something

  • OUCH

  • Looks like the deal is for 10 percent back in gift cards for any purchase over $500, so it includes the Xbox and PS Slim consoles as well. See this deal posting:

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/890273

  • WOW. Not good Gerry.

  • Don't bother trying to buy one from HN. They don't have stock, in fact they've never had store since Day one. I Pre-ordered with them and heard every excuse under the sun on why they didn't have stock, for over a week after launch. I have a sneaky suspicion that someone bought one from JB, just to get me off their back!

  • Wow, so many comments in such a short time.

Happy with my PS5 slim (disc), which was about half the price of a Pro.

  • Wating for a deal on Amazon, loaded up on gift cards during the 10% sale.

  • I'm really into gaming and own several consoles and I am into tech and use an LG OLED tv to do most my gaming on, and I already forgot this thing exists, lol

    • If you own an OLED, then it means you appreciate the superior picture quality. The Ps5 pro will showcase its potential on that TV. Those who can’t justify spending on an OLED won’t be buying an PS pro either.

  • All I see is a lot of poor people whinging. The PS5 Pro is expensive yes, but hey, so is everything else in this economy. You think it's expensive, go buy a cheaper PC then. The new 5080 is going to be like $2K just for a graphics card! And it still can't do native 4K games at resonable to high frame rates - diminishing returns. You wait for upcoming games to support Pro like GTA VI and you'll see how many people will run out and buy a Pro when they realise it's locked to 30fps and looks like dogsh!t on base PS5, probably sub 1080p with some bad FSR upscaling..

    • Yeah, because owning a PS5 Pro is the biggest flex known to mankind. You've achieved the pinnacle of success. You are the epitome of what every man strives to be in their lifetime.

  • +2

    Gerry
and also $120 back as GC

    It's a TRAP!

    • buy a game or use it towards the drumroll…. disc drive that isn't included that isn't in stock anywhere

  • Be patient with your very capable PS5 Amateur, this is bound to plummet in price sooner or later given the decreased demand.

  • Great value when compared to an upcoming 50XX series GPU

    • A ps5 Pro wins against an equivalent $1.2 gaming PC in graphics and stability performance

  • maybe with GTA6 bundle, but 1200 for digital.. they dreaming…

  • +1

Disc drive in stock at jb, they matched HN offer by just taking the 10% off the ps5 rather than as a gift card. Happy with that.

  • I look happier with my 7900XT upgrade in my PC instead of swapping my PS5 for PS5 Pro.

  • -1

I will skip this and buy ps6 in 2027.

My 2x first edition PS5 still runs great…… besides the usual not enough storage issue.

    Marvel rivals run great 👍

  • I miss PS1 and PS2 and PS3 days

    It's a sad day cause I have all gens and I don't even have a reason to get a PS5 :(

  • Who is actually paying $1198 for a PS5?! LMAO

    • To be honest, use case for either a PC or console. Look at graphics card prices nowadays haha

  • Still happy with my PS5 disc, will get the Pro in 2 years but who knows by that time we will have the PS6.

  • My biggest gripe with the PS5 pro apart from the price is the push towards a digital only future. PC gaming can be prohibitively expensive with the hardware but at least they have competing store fronts and impressive sales and discounts on the games. You will be locked into Sony's digital store when they inevitably go digital only and the prices for games on there are always full retail price. When they do sales they rarely goes as cheap as a disc version on sale. Older games that are 5 plus years old can be full retail release price and when they go on discount they're still more expensive than the disc copy that is being sold 2nd hand on eBay for less than $20. If consoles go full digital I will cough up the dough for a gaming PC and wait the 12 months or so for the 1st party exclusive to come to steam

  • +1

I feel like in the past, because there was such large technical leaps between generations, ps1 to ps2 etc, they could release them more often. Now, the gains are very minimal, lets be honest, the ps4 still looks dam good. I feel like the ps7 wont come out for a while, as with the 'upgrade' to the pro, its very, very minor at best.
