Is this beginning camera? Or pro …

    • +1

not pro, decent beginner though. tempted as i dont have a APS-C mirrorless

      • -1

I see, thanks, new to mirroless camera.. nowadays camera price is so high…

        • +7

          so high

This is literally half the price that other shops are selling it for, it returns to full price tomorrow - so will be higher.. tomorrow lol

        • +1

nowadays camera price is so high

When or what are you comparing that to?

My first mirrorless was almost 20 years ago. An Olympus e300 and that was around $1600. My current Fuji xt30 was about $1000 second hand in 2020.

About $500 is the cheapest you ever really see a real basic interchangeable lens camera.

  • Is the camera and lens good enough for portrait pics in the house (slightly lower brightness)?

    • There’s a lot to unpack here… anything can be used for portrait … what’s your standard for ‘good’ portrait? What camera are you using now?

      • Pretty much S24 phone. I had SLR camera before but was not impressed with the pic quality.
Don't want to spend $2k on good family pics indoor and outdoor and hence thinking if this camera and lens is better quality than phone for portraits. Important point is indoor as that's where you see quality going lower.
I know I need to learn to take pics on manual mode but looking for one can click great pics on auto as well

        • +1

I think you’re going to be disappointed tbh

Phones are good because there’s a high level of software processing happening behind the scenes.

The kit lens here is quite ‘slow’

Take up some photography lessons. $2k is the starting point for a decent lens.

          • @Flutterby: My friend has one that takes excellent pics. I think in my mind I am going off his case and looking for similar camera and lens. But yes I understand I need to learn to take manual pics for better quality and control.

          • +1

            @Flutterby:

$2k is the starting point for a decent lens.

There are many "decent" lenses for way less than $2K. It depends a lot the mount system, the type of photography etc. For example, for the Sony E-mount (probably one of the most popular mounts) the SEL85F18 is quite a good portrait and general purpose lens for $500-600 if you wait for a sale.

Having said that, I agree that learning how to use the camera properly will go a a long way to improve your shots. Also, most kit lenses are not great

        • What are you not happy about with the phone picture?

This is unlikely to give you better indoor portraits with the included lens when compared to your phone with its artificial background blurring; you will probably need to pay a few hundred for another lens to see improvement.

If you are shooting indoor may be look into getting some cheap stand lights from Amazon or AliExpress to light your subjects better and see if that gives you the results that you want (this is pretty specific to portraits and shots where you can set up)

          • @Fiximol: Thanks for insight mate. Phone pics are great when you look at them on phone only or if you don't zoom in.

    • If you know how to use it, yes.

    • +1

Any interchangeable camera should be really. Lens isn't particularly fast though if you are wanting the classic blurred background portrait effect.

    • "slightly lower brightness"

Get a decent brand entry flash and bounce off ceiling - $300ish. Result is day and night compared to a phone.

    • Hey mate, I have Nikon Z50 with 40mm f2 lens ( currently on sale for $230)
That works as a great portrait lens and great for videos too. I have got a few samples if you are interested. Assuming the z30 performs similarly

      • Thanks mate. That's what I was looking for. If someone can share real experience and name of a camera they have used. I will certainly look at it now.

  • Will this be better than my OG Nikon D90?

    • Joking?

    • +1

As much as I am a huge fan of the OG d90 ( I started with d90 nearly 15 years ago), I’d say you are definitely due for an upgrade, this is a good starting point to moving to mirrorless - but maybe biggest thing you may miss is the viewfinder

      • Same question but with a D7000?

        • Same

If d7000 still floats your boat, no need to upgrade, at least it has ‘rudimentary’ ok video lol

          • @Jimothy Wongingtons: and dual card slots too. i love my d7000.

            • @godofpizza: I did spend a very short time with d7000 on loan to see if I wanted to upgrade from d90 back in the day - I ended up going d600 week 1 of release and still use it as a backup camera if I do paid portraits sessions (normally don’t need it)

              • +1

@Jimothy Wongingtons: i tried using the d600 and d610 thinking it was a upgrade over the d7000. But felt the skin tone weren't that great. I ended moving to the d700 body and even though the mp is lower than the d600 series. It has better skin tones and colours.

      • You sound like you know something about cameras.

I have an old dead D60, but my 18-200 VR II is still good, so looking to buy a second hand D7200. Seen them around the $700 mark. Would that be a silly idea?

I have an Olympus mirrorless OMD E-M5, looking to sell that because I don’t like the feel of mirrorless cameras.

    • Sensors have come a very long way since then.

The d90 is better at holding paper down given it weighs more than a brick…. so it has that going for it.

      • If you are serious, get a FX format. Otherwise, you are not milking the D90 hard enough with the right lenses.

  • Given it’s an APS-C, I find 12mm an interesting kit choice - given that’s an 18mm equivalent.

  • Could we get further savings using gif card as payment?

  • Cheap! However that lens focal length is pretty short, and despite that it’s not that bright either. Not sure who it’s aimed at?

The 16-50mm seems to me to be far more flexible starter kit lens.

    • +1

This is a vlogging camera. Hence the power zoom and wide focal length.

    • Budget landscaper?

    • +2

Not sure who it’s aimed at?

This is Nikon's vlog camera with no electronic viewfinder so the 12mm PZ is for wide angle selfie style shots

If you don't have existing Nikon lenses and are buying into a new system, you're better off getting a Sony APS-C for vlogging

This Z30 is going cheap because Nikon really under engineered it:

Doesn't have IBIS so if you don't use VR lenses, you'll get the shakes on video and stills
4K video recording overheats the body and randomly shuts it down
Uses the same small battery as the Z50 series - you'll need to carry an extra battery at all times

    • I thought 24-70 2.4 was the go to starting lense nowadays

  • +2

Just beware - has a habit of overheating when doing 4k video … about 20 minutes is all you'll be able to squeeze. Can do 1080p more-or-less for a couple of hours. Compact-ish without an EVF, good for photos generally although you might want to pick up a few more Z system lenses, and can work with Nikon F-lenses with the FTZ adapter (slightly pricey) although it does make it a bit front-heavy.

    • Any chance you have tried after market F mount lenses?

Been holding off on upgrading from a 10 years old body as the lenses will cost multiple times more than the body.

      • I have a Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 and a Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 which I use infrequently. The former seems to have issues with AF hunting … but that lens is a bit worn with the AF motor gears getting loud and some back-focusing on a D3400. The latter works perfectly fine. The FTZ doesn't officially support aftermarket lenses so it's no guarantees and regardless, the AF experience is a bit worse than a native Z as AF motor technology has improved.

        • Thanks. Not sure if my old sigma 24-70 2.8 would work. Most likely that the 70-200 Nikkor 2.8 will. As well the rarely used Tokina super wide.

$10k for now the hobby gear has drawn all the motivation for a replacement, unable to existing lenses.

    • I have the Nikon Z50 and sometimes I use the dx 18-105mm lens and that performs flawlessly with photos.

    OOS?

    yeah it's gone now

  • i have a fujifilm XT100. is it a good upgrade?

Reported this as sold out, but Mod didn't action

  • Pretty dam good deal here.. got the perks email too. Seems its no longer available or sold out..

Would the Z30 be better than buying a Pocket 3 or Action 5 to create vertical/social video?

    • Yes, you can purchase L bracket from amazon to mount it vertically on tripod or on gimbal

  • It's BAAAAAAACK!

    • and gone.

  • +1

Just ordered one for click and collect, and the order went through.

    404 again….

  • Could someone let me know if this lens is good enough for casual photography as well as what lens I need for taking pictures of miniatures/figurines up close? If there's also something else I need to know, please tell me. Thank you.

    • No, it won't be better than your phone. f/3.5 aperture is too low; you probably need a f/1.8 lens.
