    • sorry didn't read through all the comments on that post…ah well

It is a bit hidden I'll admit.. maybe the OP of the other one should make a note of it in the post?

        • Deeevan noted it hours earlier in an early comment to the DJs clearance deal, so I noted it in the title of the DJs clearance deal to make it more obvious.

How is this a dupe, i cant really see the post listed apple TV @ $87.20

      • -3

It's in the comments, and as bizi noted it's included in the title of that thread now. Nice edit of your post though..

  • that could be the lowest price ever.
I bought ATV from Myer (match price $97 in HN) + used $50 gift card bought from target (AMEX $25 cash back on $50 purchase)
Totally equal 97-25=$72 but your deal is better coz i am pretty sure myer won't do this price, they will say it's below the cost

  • Bit sad that it is the only good deal on DJs & thus causing post wars on here LOL :) Merry Christmas All!

  • Xbmc yet?

    • No. In short still being worked on.

    • I wouldn't buy an ATV just for a possible jailbreak/XBMC, there are plenty of cheap options both on the market and on the horizon.

There's no optical out (so you need an HDMI receiver), but the Raspberry Pi runs XBMC suprisingly well (better than the ATV2), handles 1080p just fine, and is au$41.80. On top of that, there are cheap nettops etc, not to mention the Android port currently in beta.

Except nothing works as well as AirPlay does if you have an Apple device

    • +2

you can do it via airplay

    Good deal, but …
Honestly, I would buy the WDTV (Western Digital TV) over this any day. The AppleTV has MANY things it won't play out of the box, if at all (ie. most of my collection - about 90% of it to be precise). Note: I am a fan of 1080p video, which "slightly" compounds the problem…
If you live, breathe and eat in the Apple Eco-system, the play TV is great …
If you don't only use Apple or really want 1080p and support of all popular formats then make sure you understand the limitations of Apple TV. As far as I can see, Apple are purposely not supporting common and key formats (eg. mkv). This (and other limitations) have been there for years, despite this involving some of the most "open" and "popular" formats on the Internet.
Apple "just works" as long as you only use Apple and only do what Apple want you to do. This is a REAL let down of this product due to compatibility issues. For further reading, go here.
Note: FLAC (the most popular lossless audio format) can be made to work with Apple TV, with installation of additional libraries … All of this "just works" works out if the box with WDTV…

Be warned with the WDTV, it runs incredibly slowly and has poor seeking functionality.

    • +3

just use Airplay mirror to play mkv…

      • Thats what I do .. I have both but found the convienece of using my iphone to quickly search (network storage via DLNA, PLEX or XBMC) and then Airplay was far better then the slow WDTV menus .. plus you can use other apps like iView (a lot better on iOS then anywhere else) and SBS, BBC .. ect to watch stuff on your TV. Havn't boot the WDTV up in months.

I can play any movie file using this wonderful piece of software and it still "just works"…
Also, many BD-Rips are now ripped in mp4.

I bought a WDTV and it was one of the worst purchases I made. It had too many issues to list, and there's nothing more annoying than finally gathering the family together for a movie and the bloody technology won't work.

I have both WDTV and appletv. I connect a HDD to the WDTV and it works great. I use my iPad to AirPlay to the appletv and it works great. Now it is true you can AirPlay to the WDTV with an app; but it is not integrated and quite frankly horrible.

Will never part with my JB apple tv 1. Has boxee & Xbmc

  • +1

ran XBMC and airplay mirror it via ATV and remote control via iphone.

  • I never understood why people would ever choose this over WDTV

I returned my wdtv to get the atv. Never looked back. If I want to watch movies I can just transfer to my hdd and plug it to the TV. Atv is good to stream tv shows online like iview and on demand. Also good to show photos and videos.

I guess each have their pros and cons. For what I need the atv does the job.

      • +1

Ah ok, can you simply return electronics like the wdtv after using them?

      • +1

Are you saying wdtv can't do those things?

        • +1

Yes wdtv can't mirror my ipad. Also no iview.

        • +1

wdtv, of course, does have iview.

atv plays less formats than wdtv; unless you jailbreak it.

  • Doesn't surprise me its out of stock. I'm sure they only had a handful

  • Yep, sold out!

  • Question about Apple TV. Are you able to watch NBA on your TV if you have a leaguepass through apple tv? and is the quality HD? or is there any other way you guys would go about it?

    • The last time I checked, they still hadn't enabled Australia to get NBA League Pass on ATV and it was only available for the US.
Other way to go about it? I just plug the laptop in to the tv via HDMI. That way I can control the stream quality via the League Pass desktop site.
I'd guess that the ATV App would be similar to the iPhone and iPad app where it just selects "Best Available" and you can't choose to lower the quality if you want to.

    • +1

      Yes you can now.

      • Ah there you go! Guess it had been a season ago that I tried checking.

    • +1

Bought the NBA season pass and an Apple TV as a Xmas pressie for my sons . Live games are simply fantastic on a big screen TV - HD, stutter free and no ads. The replays are in lower def but still very good to watch. For the NBA fan it has no substitute.

Got wdtv smp $99-$50=$49, great little unit. Plays+stream everything from my ext hdd and pc (my ext hdd become nas too, big bonus). The only thing it need to improve is airplay from my iPad and iPhone to my TV, where ATV much better in this area. Still thinking is this features worth it?

    • -1

Definitely. AirPlay is life-changing – no joke. I didn't realise how powerful it was until I bought an Apple TV myself.

      • "AirPlay is life-changing …"
"AirPlay is lifestyle-changing" - fixed that for you.

        • +1

How dare you fix somebody's life!? :-)
