For me the earliest was 3 months (confirmed for myself). I'm not sure if there have been any records/reports of any earlier. Although technically (according to T&C's) you should be able to as long as you don't have any other Citi products.

          • @cuy: Thanks for the info. Guess I'll have to abuse this while I wait for my other cards to cooldown.

@ChibsQT: Just make sure to read T&C's and print them out/keep a record of it before applying as things changes.

          • @cuy: Side note have you ever had luck with getting the annual fee refunded? Came across a few comments from 2022/2023 saying they were successful over web chat/phonecall but nothing recently.

Also have you tried alternating between both their Qantas and Velocity cards or strictly a qantas collector?

I don't bother because I've been denied every time I ask, so I've stopped asking.

              I don't go with Citi's velocity cards.

I only started beginning of last year when I ran out of cards to churn for Qantas (I mainly focus Qantas).

For velocity, I only go with cards that offer velocity promotions (Have been with ANZ / Virgin Money). Virgin Money didn't have any lockout periods either (at the time, but unsure now).

Link to their past promos https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/830988 and https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/874304

In saying that, I haven't seen Velocity Promo's for a while.

Haha I'm almost the same. Just closed my citi hence the questions about fee refund and yeah previous attempts were also denied.
The Virgin flyer ones are run by Citi as well so people were assuming they'd be on similar 3 months soft lockout periods?

      • How long ago was this? I recently asked Citi if I am eligible if I reapply, and they said no.

        • Their chat/phone will say that but doesnt seem to be the case (going from recollection in a previous ozbargain comment made by someone on a citi card).

This was 6 months ago. I've not closed my existing Prestige card as I've been leveraging the benefits (4th night free). But will close and reapply after my trip in May.

Just make sure you follow the T&C's. For me I gone from Prestige to Premier and hadn't had any issues.

    • great writeup - im copy pasting that bank info into my churn spreadsheet :D

      • Yep already done - thanks @ChibsQT

Can 100% vouch for the accuracy of this analysis, I did the exact same thing in 2021/2022/2023.

My annual fees stacked up to be a few hundreds dollar worth though, through downgrades, pro-rata refunds and straight up waivers.

The climate is significantly harder now, with increased annual fees, increased spend requirements, that silly additional Qantas rewards program fee, longer exclusion periods and de-bundling of points paid (second additional amount paid only if you stick around for second year).

Looking myself into gift cards, petrol etc, but as a single parent with only one kid - don't have the massive grocery bills to get the big points amounts.

    • What's it gonna cost (not in QFF points!) to get my hands on this amazing spreadsheet?! 🙏 no jk DM me 😅

    • I’ve been looking for a summary of the 18/24month requirements for a while. Great work.

I’ve resorted to using Suncorp and BankWest due to the long churn periods now.

Is it better to open an account to become a Westpac customer and then apply for the card? Or just get the card as a new customer? Looking for the cheapest fee

    The enshittification continues… 24month lockout

  • +1

2 year wait until you can have a card again is farked

  • God damn, was nearly at 18mths since my last Westpac card. 24mths is criminal.

    • I was at 18 months on 31/12/24, I'm pretty sure they had changed the rule a few days before….

  • oooh pretty good deal. gonna apply and see what happens

  • If i sign up for a Westpac Everyday Account can i sign up to this for $150?

    • Yes per @Taako response to @HomebrewFC

  • One of the few banks that takes forever to payout bonus points, YMMV.
Met spend in October and still hanging out despite assurances criteria met and they are coming. Silver lining is at least don't have to consider them for two years.

  • Hi guys - cancelled a Qantas Premier Card few months back. Does this exclusion include the Qantas card? Sorry couldn’t find any info via the link

    • No, Qantas credit cards are serviced by NAB, however it doesn't count as one of their own products either.

  • Any CC that has 12 months or have they all moved to 24m?

  • Has anyone any (positive) experience in booking Emirates economy flights to Europe using Qantas points? Last time I've tried, it was nowhere near 112k Velocity points needed for a return trip (from Perth) with Qatar.

I'm not interested in business/first class. I just want to get there and back for the least amount of money.

    • +1

I'm not interested in business/first class

Yeah plenty of economy stock on EK to europe, though fees are still not the cheapest at $500 pp per leg though better than the crazy $1k+ for business/first class stuff when airlines like Finnair are only charging like $50. Only about $150-200 if you fly through LAX/DFW on AA.

      • Thanks. I see that Qantas rates to Europe are way better now than what they used to be a few years ago.

  • I'm new to this kind of credit card reward points and am wondering…
If spent $6000 at a computer shop using this CC, will that count as eligible purchase (towards the $6000 in first year) or do I have to spend it on Qantas related eligible items? Thanks.

    • +1

will that count as eligible purchase

It's designed around spending on retail purchases. Doesn't have to be travel or flight related. It's only typically bpay and government spending that gets excluded (rates, tolls, rego, ATO stuff, Auspost postbillpay stuff etc). And then people trying to get around that using Sniip etc as bills are usually big $$$$ figures so easiest to reach the minimum spend with.

      • Amazing - thanks for clarifying 😃

  • I closed a St George Credit card last month after receiving Bonus Points? Will I still be eligible?

  • I've up to this point only used Velocity and have ~300k points sitting there. Should i continue with velocity, or also build up my QFF which is currently sitting at around 60k points from Woolworths rewards? Are people doing both? or is there a method to this?

    • I prefer to keep a solid balance in both Qantas and Velocity. I generally try to swap one for one so when the time comes to book a trip I have more options. For example, I took the family to NZ south island last year and used Velocity (no Qantas availability). This year I booked a trip to the north island, but there's was no virgin so booked Qantas. From memory was about 120K pts plus $600-$800ish taxes for 4 people return vs $3,200 cash for both.

  • Just wonder whether paying gov bills via paypal is eligible?

    • I think they closed this loophole with PayPal a while back.

  • God these deals are getting average

    $6k spend…

    • $6k is easy to spend in a few months; use b2bpay to pay some bills, etc.

  • How come this card even charges international transaction fee at 3%? Doesn't it defeat the purpose of using it while traveling overseas and making use of the travel insurance?
