    I installed a haier heat pump here for $1500 (vic) after rebates, including installation and taking away the old gas unit. No regrets.
    Not only is it 400% efficient, but I have connected it to my solar inverter to boost to a higher temperature when there's excess solar production, then stop if there's contention. Which means when it's cold for days on end, I pay normally, but whenever there's some sun it makes the water as hot as possible, acting as a thermal battery.

    It's worth considering whether you'll need a new circuit put in, if you're switching from gas. Units like mine draw 4 or 5 amps, unless I allow resistive heating, so it's sitting on a shared circuit. In general you'll be recommended to have a separate circuit put it.

    Another point to consider: if you wait until your current hot water system dies, you won't have the time to sort out any of these deals, and your spouse will get you to install whatever can be done quickly. So waiting until your current system fails is not necessarily going to get you onto a heat pump; it can take a few weeks to do the paperwork and arrange an install time.

    • Have you done any calculations on payback period?

      I'm considering but my gas hot water storage tank is only just over 3yrs old and seems wasteful to get rid of it

      • I bundled getting solar, HWS, induction hob and EV, so it's a bit tricky to tease out the individual payback periods. The HWS alone would pay itself back more quickly, but with solar, the price of electicity is less. But it also means I take advantage of the extra energy generation, meaning I get more value for the generated solar than 3.3c/kWh. In my case, it also meant I could disconnect gas, which saves me $400+ per year, just on the supply charge.

        If you wait until the gas system breaks, you will end up replacing it with another gas unit unless you are willing to live without hot showers for a few weeks.

        if you pay $50/month for gas hot water, that's $600/year, so the upfront cost would be recouped in 2.5 years, if you don't have to pay for electricity. What you pay will vary depending on your situation. For me I expect it to be mostly free even in Winter.

          I already have solar, EV and free electricity between 12-2pm which I use to cool/heat the house and charge my EV.

          I'll need to replace my gas stove and also decommission my plumbed in gas bbq

    Got some quotes from them:
    $1,199 for SPT Black Knight
    $1,500 for Emerald
    $2,000 for iStore

    I had been looking at the Emerald elsewhere and they are all generally around the $1,600 to $1,700 mark.
