Surfers Paradise Crime

Hi all, first time poster long time lurker. Over the New Years break me and my husband stayed at Mantra Circle on Cavill - we spent close to 2k for beach views on the 22nd story for three nights.

Upon checking in we noticed the unit next door had its door smashed open - peeking through the hole in the door I originally saw water on the floor and assumed it had flooded and the QFES had to knock the door open. A day passed and my husband noticed a dog unresponsive in the unit and we thought it had been DFV incident, and the dog was starving. We rang security and the head of security told us to call police as they ring so much they would not respond. Found this lazy and a load of rubbish. Called police heard nothing so obviously not a priority.

Turns out there was an occupant and he was playing music incredibly loud - so in an attempt to diffuse the situation I played some baby crying noises through my portable Bose speaker and he turned the music off. This started up again and I managed to sneak a video of him sitting on the bed with his loud music looking really distraught or high - rubbing his hands on his head. Pretty scary I didn’t feel safe and was still worried about the dog.

On top of this an Arab or Lebanese family above us was being very loud continuously and threw their hat onto our balcony to get our attention - we ignored it and left the cap where it was - security prevents any other floor from accessing another floor.

To say the least it was a pretty bad stay - I won’t be going back. Has anyone else had this type of experience before ?

It’s not called Sufferers Parasite for no reason. Cavill especially is a cesspit after dark.

Did you arrange through AirBnB or through the hotel?
The one bad stay my family and I had in Surfers, was when we rented a place privately and not through the hotel.

For some reason, this caused the hotel staff to act like complete asses toward us, with lines like "oh we don't own any of the apartments above that level", and for them to leave the carpets and general areas in a completely horrendous state.

    • I thought Mantras were all Hotels, but it definitely sounds like this was a BNB.

    • +1

      It was booked through booking.com

      • +3

Booking.com has loads of BNB style listings. More like a marketplace site these days.

The weird thing I noticed is that some units had key locks/swipe cards/both or just one of each. I think the card reader units were managed investments and the units with key locks are owner occupier. The drugo’s door had a smashed in key lock meaning it was probably an owner. Though he had no furniture ?

you're going to surfers paradise, what do you expect? a quiet few nights away? lol

  • +43

The crime here is you paying $2K

    • +6

      more money than sense

    • +1

Peak time and husband is forced to take leave over XMAS for office shutdown and I booked a few months in advance. We needed a break.

      • +9

        sounded relaxing

back to work for a real holiday

      • +8

Surfers is a shit hole, I suggest going somewhere nice next time.

  • +7

Karen and Darren go to Surfers! yewwww!

Not gonna get much sympathy from ozbargain lol. maybe opt for an airbnb at Burleigh or Byron next time.

    • +2

      Byron next time

Out of the frying pan into the fire

  • Never had that experience before. Next question?

  • Was there like 10+ years ago, nice place, good location, but I didn't pay $2k tho :)

Thank you for clarifying the race of the people above, it added a lot to the story. They have a long history of hat based offences.

    • +2

      You thinking of Koreans?

    • +2

It was just that culture speaks very loudly nothing against race - they were also confrontational yet we did not make contact - it added to everything else. We’ve stayed at heaps of hotels however the Mantra Circle Cavill was a scary and upsetting experience.

      • +2

A quick Google search indicates it's not a hotel, more like serviced apartments individually let.

    • yeah those hat-based offences are brutal.. especially when a fedora is involved

  • +1

The junkie next door sounds rough, however not much the police can do if someone is minding their own business in their own apartment.

As for the family above, how do you know they didn't accidentality loose the hat?

    • They were yelling for attention and leaning over the above balcony

      • +7

Were they shouting out HEY! we accidentality dropped our kids hat over, can you throw it back up.

        • Ask them to throw down a rope and you can tie the hat on.

      • Might have been trying to ask you if the baby crying on your speaker was okay and their hat fell off on to your balcony?

  • +7

Surfers is nothing but a tourist trap.
The only thing good is smashing a large zinger box fresh on the beach while watching the sunset.

The only thing good is smashing a large zinger box fresh on the beach while watching the sunset.

      Uh.

    • +1

      while watching the sunset

      Sunrise … rather.

I’m just really perplexed in how QPS prioritise the workload - if one occurrence has been logged how many others to up the priority. An unstable drug user with a smashed in door doesn’t get a response ? Already reported and deemed
QPS cannot assist. I thought potential DFV was QLD’s priority. Along with youth crime.

    • Should have said the guy was engendering someone.

      Or is that so 2024?

      • +1

        Misgendered someone?
        Thought crime?

    • +5

They were too busy looking for someone who damaged 4m2 of grass that horses have to run over.

  • +5

To say the least it was a pretty bad stay - I won’t be going back. Has anyone else had this type of experience before ?

No because I’m not dumb enough to go there in the first place.

  • +6

Import the 3rd world, become the 3rd world.

    • Why do you assume the OP is 3rd world?

Other than their story, which has more holes than a Swiss cheese. Are there any bridges near Cavill Ave?

      • Why do you assume the OP is 3rd world?

I didn't, maybe that is your views coming out.

    • +2

      Weird assumption

      • He's implying to the people who threw hat.

  • +6

surfers paradise is where the bogans go when they cant afford bali

so you can imagine the dead beats that go there

the best areas of the gold coast are just over the border from NSW (burleigh heads and south to the border) and the beaches around tweed heads (kingscliff, casurina, cabarita, etc)

    • +2

I thought Bali was the place bogans go cause it was cheaper than Surfers?
Avoided both. Have no idea really.

    • Sounds like they'd have to be rich bogans to go there instead of Bali. I'm betting the beer and food is also 4 times more expensive.

  • Recently I stayed at Paradise Isles on Chevron island.

It was a nice walk into Surfers or a quick bus ride.

  • +1

Did anyone help the dog in the end?

  • +1

We stay at the Gold Coast all the time and I've never had an experience like that.

We tend to stay at big hotels or older apartments, we have noticed that newer apartments seem to attract more trouble.

  • +1

unfortunately you just stayed at a time where all the dead shits and junkies come out to play

    • +1

      So year round

      • well yeah that too but more so xmas / new years

        • From schoolies right through until school goes back

So all of summer and a bit of spring

  • +6

So let me get this straight, someone played some music and somebody else dropped a hat.

starts OzB thread crime is out of control!

  • So you peek on other apartments and don't like returning hats? Ok.

  • just step over the dead bodies in the lobby and pretend you didn't see them
