Choose Your Apocalyptic Food

If you could only chose one long shelf life food for the next Armageddon/famine/lockdown etc what would you choose?
I'll start, canned condensed milk.

  • Rice

    • Canned Rice cream ???
Back in the old days of cubs/scouts camping trips == many a meal was this.

      1.) very cheap.
2.) contains good mix of carbs / protein.
3.) canned - so easy to transport +++ long shelf life.
      4.) just heat + serve == simples.

unless you forgot a can opener in your Armageddon kit.

      • Yeah totties, providing you get a good stock of seed potatoes 🥔

Either is better than flour. Unless you had grain and were willing to mill it.

    • Now I remember, during the COVID lockdown, there were people who panic-bought rice but they weren't sure how to consume it other than use it to dry their mobile phones or to use it for TikTok videos LOL.

  • instant noodles

  • Canned tuna

    • or canned salmon.

      that's for the cat?
      .

  • Milo

  • beer

Some variation of meat stick - like striker salami or slimjims

    Soylent - ideally green

I've read the reviews and some people really like it and some hate it. I guess you could say the taste varies from person to person

    did somebody say KFC?

      I don't care

Surely you would wise up and go straight for the toilet paper/hand wash? Why waste time grabbing food.

      Is it 2020 again?

All of you can read the article above with the title, "Could you survive on just one food?"

My answer would be potatoes …

From Google AI overview: Potatoes can last for years if stored properly in a cool, dry, and dark place with good ventilation.

My answer would be potatoes …

Potatoes make all the things a man needs to survive.

      (Chips and vodka.)

      Im sold.

    Spam,spam,spam,spam

  • If you want to stretch out survivability, I would have guessed a combination of:
    1) Energy gel (just for the KJ)
    2) Amino acid + fibre powder
    3) Vitamin tablets

All can be stored indefinitely without going off. The powders are rehydrated using your water source/recycled urine. Won't taste great but it will keep you alive for a very long time.

  • aren't potatoes a complete food that you can live off for a really long time?

MSG. It will make humans more palatable when society finally resorts to cannibalism.

      Fuiyoh!

    potato chips

  • OP is compiling his shopping list for the 'big day'. It's definitely getting closer.
The storm clouds are closing in ………the creatures are restless…the serpents are stirring…..

    • What I'm getting from this thread is that while everyone is fighting over tinned food and potatoes, the ice-cream aisle will be all mine

      • Won't last long on the shelf, but you'll be sumo stylin' at the end if you hoover it all up

  • Food Buckets from Jim Bakker. He does the demo, and nearly chokes on the Creamy Potato Soup. ;)

Otherwise, wait for Costco, to get more stock of their's

  • How long is the lockdown? If it's only as bad as Daniel Andrews lockdown, I'd hope I could still freeze food. If no electricity, then canned fish. I don't have a lot of faith in potato being OK for too long as it often becomes green and with the sprouts, which is poisonous (caused by the light?). It also depends on being able to cook or not… I can eat canned fish without cooking, but not raw potato.

  • corned beef cans are cheap in aldi right now

  • Rice, beans, and multi vitamin tablets. Decades of shelf life when stored properly. It won't be fun, but the end of the world isn't meant to be. Also I'd keep the materials and equipment to make distilled alcohol. Multitude of uses.

Don't forget that the end of the world is right around the corner. Always. For over 2000 years now.

Some people were actually miserable the end times didn't occur, and called it the 'Great Disappointment'

  • The oldest thing you can eat is Hardtack.

Here's a video of someone eating hardtack made in 1863:

Let's get this out on a tray

  • It needs to be something that won't give you cavities as no dentists post apocalypse.

    • Oh, there will be dentists post apocalypse. Butchers used to double as dentists and surgeons in the 19th century. What you won't have, is anesthetics.

  • I got a can of baby formula. Hopefully its like milk powder fortified with vitamins. Or Sustagen

  • Assorted canned soups.
