  • So N97 > N100?

    • +1

The N97 is marginally more performant, but I doubt you're buying a mini PC of this class for the grunt.

      • You sure are if it's for HTPC/Camera services, intel's quicksync is insanely powerful for this size/form factor/tdp. Easily multiple 4k streams powerful, while transcoding an output.

  • OOS ?

  • +1

Is this new Intel mini PC as fast as old Mac Mini from 3-4 years ago, like the M1?

  • +3

    Back in stock again?

  • Is this much better value than this deal? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/883746

    • +4

It lacks AV1 decode, and draws 3x odd more power while being bigger, but it can have more RAM, and is faster cpu wise.

On balance, for a home office yes. For a home theatre/plex setup, l'd go the tiny boi. It has direct HDMI out for one.

  • How does this compare to Beelink mini PCs?

    • +1

Same sorta thing if the specs are the same.

Would you reinstall the windows on this?

    • It already has Windows 11 Pro

    • +2

100% Yes, I wouldn't trust the Windows install of any device not from one of the big PC manufacturers, too many of these low cost mini pcs come with random malware or adware pre-installed.

It's probably worth booting it once with the original OS to grab the activation key first before doing a wipe though, as I doubt it's baked into the BIOS.
      https://www.techrepublic.com/article/find-windows-11-product…

    • Absolutely. I have a couple N100 based mini PCs and I formatted and installed Windows on them myself, even though they came pre-installed with Windows 11 and running a malware bytes scan on the systems came up clean. I highly recommend anyone buying any new PC also install the operating system themselves (one as a learning experience and two so you feel more confident that there is no hidden malware embedded in the system).

  • Would this be ok for web browsing and watching youtube?

    • Definitely

    • I've been using a Chuwi Larkbox x 2023 N100 based mini PC for almost a year (note I formatted the pre-installed Windows 11 and installed Windows 11 myself as I don't trust any PC with a pre-installed O/S) on a daily basis for web browsing, youtube watching (1440p) and downloading - it's virtually silent (fan ramps up a bit when download from usenet finishes and it does quickpar checking and then unpacks the RAR files). I only switch on my gaming desktop a few times a week now to game.

  • This or an N150?

    • if the N150 is the same price, go for that as it's newer technology and has a slight (200Mhz?) boost in CPU frequency

  • +1

Get the n100 ones great for synology nas setup and jellyfin server. Tdp 6w is so power efficient

    • Would that just be using usb hard drives/adapters, and if so are there any reliability concerns compared to a pc with native sata ports?

    • What would you recommend to make a NAS with this Mini PC?

    • The 6W TDP always quoted is JUST FOR THE CPU. It does not include the RAM, motherboard, SSD/NVME etc. So add on at least a few watts for those items.
That being said I have an Intel N5095 CPU on a mini-ITX motherboard (which quotes 15W TDP) which has 6x SATA 7200rpm mechanical drives attached and 1x 16GB SO-DIMM RAM module - the entire system 'at idle' (ie: files being streamed from the NAS via jellyfin, but no transcoding occurring) draws 50W according to my power meter. I haven't measured transcoding draw, since I don't bother with transcoding (but it is enabled on my system). The majority of my media library is 1080p, HEVC encoded material with some recent AV1 encoded media.

  • would like a mini PC powered by a Type C port. Much easier to share the power and port hub with a laptop.
