I'm about to need a new one. Is it any good?

    Seems too cheap

    • +6

I've had the previous "Bunnings brand" Aqua systems one for 2 years and it's held up quite well. It's on the southern wall so less exposure to the sun.

      • My Aqua systems one broke last week, but I've had it for at least a decade, maybe 2. In the summer it's used pretty much daily. I'd have bought another one but I wasn't able to find it on the Bunnings website.

    • +2

I've got one. I paid $50 for it.

It's perfectly adequate. It's not amazing but it does the job. It's a bit chintzy and probably won't last as long as a name brand, but my kids will probably trash it before that anyway.

Just keep your receipt and return it if it breaks.

    • +7

I am different to the other two. I purchased one, got it home, opened it up, and it was clear as day that it's cheap crap with a hose that looks like it will kink if you look at it.
Took it back the next day, bit the bullet and got a Hoselink one.

Now, I didn't use it, so my feedback is of substantially less value than those that have actually owned and used it for some time.

Oh yeah, like a lot of the Bunnings reviews say, it has a large chemical smell, a signature of cheap product.

      • +1

Oh it is cheap and nasty. But it's ok for $35 in the expectation that it won't last 5 years.

        • +2

Yep it’s absolutely crap, even if they gave it away for free it’s not worth getting out turn hammer drill

I have 2x gardena retractable reels so I knew these were cheap crap, I expected to only use it maybe 10 times per year but it doesn’t even retract right

Whereas daily use of my gardens ones 2.5 years later is still perfect

        • +2

Trust me. The pain and frustration of a cheap hose and cheap reel lasts long after it has gone to landfill. Better off waiting for a gardena version to go on sale. 5 year warranty. My last 2 were about $80 eqch and are perfect 4 years on.

          • @feisty: Yeah, that was my view, it was going to be shit and annoying, so just avoid the hassle, and pony up to get a Hoselink and be happy.

          • @feisty: I agree with that…but…when are the Gardena ones on sale? I've never seen it, and not for lack of looking. (I saw some non-Gardena 20m ones on sale for $99.)

            And for $80? They're listed at $268 right now…
            https://www.bunnings.com.au/gardena-30m-roll-up-retractable-…

Are we talking about the same thing? If it's available at $80 I'd be jumping on it and getting a few to replace my Holman's, which are "ok" but a bit shoddily built.

I've had it on camelcamelcamel (Amazon) and it's never gone down there. Also never seen it on sale for Bunnings. (Is there a Bunnings price watcher?)

            • @dealz4all:

Is there a Bunnings price watcher?

pricehipster.com does price watches, but I have found it to be a bit flakey.

”a hose that looks like it will kink if you look at it.”

Did you just kink shame Garden Basics?

    • It depends if you are thinking to keep it for decades or ready to replace more often. My advise is buy one of those metal reels to attach firmly to the wall.

    • Thanks all for the input. I have a Pope one and the plastic 25mm cylinder bracket (best way to describe it?) perished so snapped off the wall. The hose reel itself is fine but they want $35 just for the replacement bracket!!!!

Any better ideas for wall mounting a Pope retractable reel that holds on by an attached 25cm diameter piece of steel?

    • Like someone else said, I bought the Aqua Systems el-cheapo real over 4 years ago (don’t recall exactly). Going from the manual winder it was great. Definite improvement. I bought another one a year or so later for the back. One under cover, one SE corner partially covered. Both reels held up, but wall mount on one is a bit buckled. Happy with the purchase….

That said, the retraction mechanism is a bit finicky. When I have to replace it, I’ll spend more.

Please save your money and buy hoselink. I understand that it is expensive but it is the one you want. I have tried and returned many brands and finally put hoselink and the retraction and kink is unbeatable

    • +19

Had all hoselinks fail. They aren't built well considering the exorbitant price they ask for.

      • +8

Totally agree. The springs rusted out on mine. Gardena with a 5 year warranty replaced them. The Germans make things to last.

        • +4

Not so much cars though. Japanese cars are more reliable

          • @Flintz: 100% correct. I have 2 Porsches. 1 x engine rebuild at 80,000ks. Porsche HQ in Melbourne couldn't care less. Discovered later was common fault and Porsche ignored pleas to contribute to repairs. Money pits! I should have just bought a bigger boat for same result!
Yes, there was a time I had some money.

          • +1

@Flintz: Valid point. They have lost the plot with their cars. Most other german products are quality still.

        • Not totalitarian dictatorships

        • I agree, keep receipt swap out at bunnings no questions asked. My 30m gardena still going at 4.5 years and reeling up like a boss. Did swap out a gardena spray attachmeent under warranty after 3 years, that was my kids who broke the lock mechanism. My local Karem is salty and yolo on returns at bunnings.

Hoselink are trash. All the money spent on advertising and you get a mediocre product considering the price you pay.

      Gardena all the way.

      • +2

Gardena is best. Lasted me 10 years and still going

    • +1

I've got a few hoselink products and they all kinda fail in one way or another. Never really associated their products with the word quality despite the price

    • I have a hoselink I received as gift, I do not recommend them. Never retracted properly from when I installed it. Connectors are terrible as they make the connection very long which strains the wrist when holding it for an extended time due to the weight of the hose and the length of join acting as a lever magnifying the weight. I have three other cheap ones on clearance from bunnings that are much better.

  • +1

    This thread is kinky.

    • I see what you did there! LOL

    • It's built for outdoor use.

  • While pricey best buying macnaught or hoselink

    • Break even on a macnaught here is 10 of this product brother.

      • +1

A quality hose that retracts the first time everytime holds value to me. I understand not for everyone. Cheapest does translate to personal value. Trips to Bunnings to exchange/substitute under warranty is something I'll avoid

  • +1

Paid 50 for this and happy. Had a holman that kept bursting especially in the heat.

    Pretty low flow though

  • +6

Do yourself a favour and just fork out for the Gardenia. 5 years in still like new with daily use.

  • Literally bought this in the morning thinking it was regular price. None were on the aisle shelf at my local Bunnings but found them on pallets at the front of store.

  • +1

Think i will grab this bad boy for the front of my house since i wont be too annoyed if it got nicked by someone at this price point

  • 30m one is also reduced to 79

    • +1

I think because Aldi has a 30m one coming out - was going to get the Aldi one, but now wondering what might be better 😮

    • Anyone happen to know the regular price for the 30m version? I've searched a bit but couldnt find the info. 20m might be enough, ripper price.

      *edit.
Was $98.90 last year as per https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/823302

  • For $35 , I’m willing to give it a crack.

  • What's the warranty on this please?

  • I paid $99 for the 30 meter version and its pretty good so far. I wish I save the money and get this version tho

  • No mention of outdoor use or UV I guess not gonna last long. 3 years I'd be happy for the price.

    • Testing it today. Not bad. The flow is just as good. The retracting force is strong enough. The pipe quality is cheapy feeling. It's ok for the price and should survive the sun since inside the reel. Better to be gentle when using it around.

  • There's one at mitre 10 going for 39 bucks, anyone know if it's worth the extra 4 bucks?

    https://www.mitre10.com.au/greendew-retractable-hose-reel-20…

    • I'd go Bunnings simply due to their easy return process.

  • Are you kidding me? I bought it for $49 2 weeks ago!

    • +2

buy it now, and refund it with the old receipts.

  • This is one of the ones which is you get what you paid for. Gardena all the way (also a 5 year warranty)

  • Good price. Just replace it when it breaks.

Only problem is if it's not available on the future and you have to place new mounting holes in your wall with a new branded reel.

I bought a couple of Mechpros for under $50 over two years years ago and they are still going as strong as ever.

  • just got one from Aldi last week for ~$20 something. not sure if that's still around.

  • The 30m Aldi version is selling next week for $79.99. Not sure how that is a deal. Imma go with the Bunnings bargain!

  • To all that ordered from Bayswater store…. The click and collect was filled with your orders lol. Good job
