It's not bad price..Just bare in mind Flint 3 with wifi 7 is coming early 2025.

    • +18

And when Flint 3 comes out you'll tell them to wait for the price to drop

      • +12

And by the time the price drops, the release of Flint 4 would've been announced.

      • It has been under $190 fare few times direct from glinet this year

    • I'm still using flint 1.. thanks might upgrade when flint 3 is out

    • +1

it will be much more expensive.

    • +8

Eh, almost no devices are wifi 7 capable.. Further, how long will critical bugs take to fix? How long will openwrt support take? Will there be major draw backs? This router has substantial standing and is more than future proof for years to come.

    • +7

With GLinet and OpenWRT devices you benefit from some aging as the software takes time to fully harness the hardware and iron out the bugs.
So I'd argue now is a great time to buy the Flint 2 - especially been lovng mine lately on op24 firmware.

    • Flint 3 is likely Qualcomm based so not quite as appealing to those who want to use OpenWrt on it.

      https://forum.openwrt.org/t/gl-inet-flint-3-gl-be9300-discus…

  • Can this integrate with Deco M5 mesh devices?

Can this be configured to use VPN client, such as Nord VPN, PIA, or Mullvad?

    • Yes to the VPN services, it runs full OpenWrt, so anything OpenWrt can do, this can do.

    • Keen to understand integration with Deco M5s as well. I can’t get my Deco set to work in Access Point mode and am having issues where speed is <100mbps on Wifi despite having a 1000mbps service.

Would something like this plus the Decos solve my issue?

      • A bit of Googling shows that a lot of people are having issues where the Deco M5 will restrict the LAN ports to 100Mbps when using ethernet backhaul in AP mode. I haven't searched enough to see if there is a solution.

  • +1

Anyone tried using the GBE lan ports for WAN, to leave 2.5GbE between 2 clients?

    • You would have to be comfortable with using LuCI to do it but i don't see why you couldn't

      • I usually prefer cli, but I can use LuCI.

Cool, so long as its happy doing so.

    • Depends on the internal switch configuration, but I would assume so.

    • +2

      Yes, works great.

      In LuCI:

      Network > Interfaces > WAN - Edit
      Change Device to LAN5.

      Network > Devices tab > br-lan - Configure.
      Untick LAN5 and tick eth1.

      Voila

  • Would this be good for a 3 storey townhouse?

    • +45

No, bricks are probably a better building material to use.

    • I assume your question is regarding wifi and if so then I would say no.

I have one and love it but got it to use as a router and had no intention of using it for wifi.

In the cases I have used it, it’s very fast when close to it but the range is weak and I believe it is a known flaw of the device.

A 3 storey townhouse would struggle to get efficient coverage from a single router and how much it would struggle would then depend on the construction of said townhouse.

    • +1

you might be better off with a mesh system like eero or redmi

    • +2

Mesh is best with a node on each floor. TP Link Deco is simple to setup and it's easy to mix and match different models too

    • +2

If you don't mind 2nd hand, and you want to be thrifty, theres a fair few mesh systems on fb marketplace. Eg Google, eero

  • +2

I am using this router & I gotta say my only regret is waiting so long to get one. All my networking issues were resolved & the level of transparency & the range of utilities on this router are amazing compared to the usual consumer grade d-link/tplink slop I was wasting time with before.

  • good router ama

    • +2

Ok, if I have an ASUS AX1800 and it seems to do everything I need, what's the benefit of this one?

    • I got a question i posted below about its wifi transmit power if you don't mind checking yours.

    • Can you do vlans? I need to put sum iot in their place. Thanks!

  • +1

If anyone does pull the trigger, please make sure to update the firmware as soon as you get it.

Apparently there were some performance issues + other bugs in early revisions.

    • That was fixed beginning of 2024 i'm pretty sure, and this would be shipped with the latest firmware. I got this router in June and its been solid as a rock.

But saying that yes, you should always keep your routers firmwar up today.

    • It does it automatically when you first switch it on and connected to the internet. This was happening in 2023, quickly fixed with firmware update.

  • Anyone got this router can check what is its wireless tx-power set to?

Note i am assuming you've set the country code to AU since different country setting would have different setting for it.

You can check this from the luci interface, Network->interface then click edit on your SSID and there should be status box.

    Example (taken from MR90x):
    Channel: 1 (2.412 GHz)
    Tx-Power: 27 dBm
    Signal: -55 dBm | Noise: -91 dBm
    Bitrate: 84.1 Mbit/s | Country: AU

    Channel: 149 (5.745 GHz)
    Tx-Power: 28 dBm
    Signal: -77 dBm | Noise: -92 dBm
    Bitrate: 429.0 Mbit/s | Country: AU

    • 20dBm when on max power setting

      • Thanks.
That seems to be on the low side. I was expecting it to be 30dBm
Maybe you did not set the country code to AU?

        • If I manually edit the wireless conf then it goes up to 24dBm

          • @rashn: What setting did you change?Country code?
Also is the tx-power the same for both 2.4 and 5Ghz?

That result is better but strangely still lower than my MR90x on openwrt. You should in theory get a stronger signal with the 24dBm.

            • +1

@Sum1: I just changed the txpower setting, The country was always AU, Yes on both …
There was a bug with the device which caused it to exceed 30dBm at some stage and they seemed to have fixed it by capping it I guess. Anyway, I use unifi APs for Wi-Fi so doesn't matter to me.

  • +2

Just got one of these last month. Outstanding, highly recommended.

Going to price protect it now, cheers OP

    • Have you tried to test what speed you get over some distance says 2 rooms?

      • yep, i've got a 100mbps internet plan. 2 rooms over (brick walls) is still 100mbps on the 5GHZ network.

Any further and it starts to drop off pretty fast on the 5GHZ network, and then id swap to the 2.4ghz one which is still 40mbps at least.

  • What is the speed drop over 2 rooms? It'd be perfect if I can get over 1Gbps in my bedroom,

  • The Archer AX80 seems to be cheaper.

    • Some TP-link such as that model seems to be using an EU firmware which means lower a power transmit compared to the US tp link firmware.
So unless you don't care much about being unnecessarily shorted out of wifi coverage then i would avoid EU model TP link routers.
You might want to double check with tplink support first if the model you are interested in buying comes with EU/US or maybe even an AU firmware for the model

      • That is quite interesting. What bands is the lower power transmit specifically on? i.e. 2.4 or 5GHz

        • +1

          Both

        • Both,
          20dBm vs 30 dBm on 2.4 Ghz
          and
          23dBm vs 30dBm on 5Ghz.

Although in saying that the answer above by rashn with my question in regard to this router seems to indicate the Flint2 router is also using 20dBm power which seems to be following closer to EU regulation as well.
But i am not sure if they configured the correct country code or not since openwrt does allow a configuration to change the country code.

I needed a router. A router was posted. Good discussion followed. I learned stuff. Long time lurker had to join to upvote. Thanks OP, thx comments, purchased because needed… or wanted… how does one tell the difference? Off to build my 3-storey town house using routers!

I have gigabit FTTP, so I wanted a 2.5G port for a few devices… but I also already have a mesh wifi system.
Suggestions for the nbn modem router? Is this one good or overkill given it will be in bridge mode

    • Following as I'm in a similar situation

    • It's not overkill for you by the sound of things.

This is a powerful router where SQM will work very well for a high speed connection serving several devices at once. I recommend you set up sqm-autorate (just search for it and the github will pop up) to optimise everything.

      • I'm a newbie (not sure what SQM is) any tutorials or anything to detail all that for me?

        • SQM and what it is, will be explained on the github.

The reason for an auto-rate setup is to basically make it self adjusting.

The how-to is also on the github.

  • Wondering if I could setup mesh with tplink deco AC1200.. So Basically Flint 2 router and 3 decos in AP mode?

  • ok I'm trusting y'all got one. does it come with openWrt or need to install?

    • +2

It comes with openwrt. May need a firmware update which is also click of a button

  • I have a really poor understanding of wifi and all the mechanics involved. Can anyone help me out?

Recently upgraded from ABB (100/20) to Superloop (1000/40) plan. I never really had any issues with ABB but superloop comes out a bit cheaper and for a better plan.

After switching in early dec, I started to notice big variability in my speeds, ranging from 8mbs - 350mbs using a deco m5 system across the house.

We have a 4 bedroom house 2.5 stories (there's a small step below for a second living room), the NBN port is located in this area.

While I get coverage across and even outside the home, the deco app tells me my nodes get 2/3 signal strength which makes me feel they may be unable to relay a strong signal and that may contribute to the reduced speeds or variability (noting that congestion is also likely a culprit).

Can anyone give me any advice as to whether it may be worth getting this router to set up as the main router and then my 3 decos can all act as nodes?

And if not, is there another possible solution? Is it a better mesh router set up?

    • ~300Mbps speed across the home is normal from my own experiences. My Nest WIFI Pro 6 got barely 100Mbps by a node placed in my bedroom (2-room away) until I lifted all the nodes higher (placing on a box each temporarily) to get ~300Mbps. Testing straight close to the main node gives ~800Mbps. Remember that the server like speed.net can threshold your speed. Best to use the tool built into your router. Or connect your laptop to the main node via a cable to get a more accurate speed.

This router is 2.5Gbps which should give over 1Gbps across the house. That will make the most of your 1000 plan. But in most use cases 300Mbps is enough.

      • Reckon this would serve as a good main router and I use my current deco m5s as additional nodes?

I am curious if that would just improve the overall connectivity between nodes due to proximity and the additional WAP.

        • In the same boat. I'm still deciding on which one to buy. This won't improve your existing wifi network tho as they are not the same brand? Instead, it will create a separate network that should cover 2-room away for gigabit speed. So, some devices don't work until you switch the network. It's the annoying part.

Maybe getting something like Archer AX72 Pro since you already with the ecosystem. Will have to double check tho.

          • @bcYield: Lol.. I'm laughing at myself now cause I never even considered the fact that it would create two separate networks.

I'm still travelling now so guess I'll need to do some research when I get back!

    Worth upgrading from RT-AC68U??

    • Yes I did this and retired the 68U to media bridge in the office(previously all devices reliant on their own WiFi). Huge upgrade

  • This is the best router I’ve ever used by far. The software is now rock solid, with regular updates. Range is amazing - I can walk half way down my street and easily beats the Asus AX86U I had and returned to Amazon 🤣

    • Which firmware version you using? latest beta?

  • Went out of such earlier today, but back in sign again now. Same price with voucher.

  • If this is a router not including a modem what is the 2.5gbs WAN ports used for?

    • +1

That'll depend on the type of internet you have. I'm on FTTP so I only need to connect the WAN port to my NBN NTD inside my house.

      • Oh whereas i have FTTN which my house has the black box inside which i connect my current modem which i then connect an ethernet cable to this router

  • Hi, could someone confirm if I can use this router with 2 tplink nodes as APs? Thanks

  • Code not working?

  • Just a heads up that the Flint 3 with Wi-Fi 7 is coming soon, expected ETA is April/June, hence the discounts on the Flint 2. Same with the new Slate 7 travel router.
