Does porting your number to jb hifi cancelling the plan then porting your number to another provider get rid of your phone number?

    • Why risk it? It would probably be fine, but for the sake of $2 or cost of a new SIM, probably best not to

  • Can you still access the Telstra app and Telstra rewards with the JB Mobile plan ?

    • Yes

  • Has anyone tried combining/swapping the plans between an existing number on a Telstra plan and a ported in number on the JB plan recently?

I did this successfully 2-3 times in previous years but that was before JB plans got spun off into a new carrier, so not sure if it works anymore.

Any tabs (samsung tabs9/s10 ultra) qualify for this deal?

  • +1

I got the same deal 2 years ago and it is expiring in 2 days, the "early termination fee" still showing as $70+….

  • Guys,
Can I buy this plan first and use the same $1200 GC to buy mobile phone?
    Thanks in advance!

    • You can use the gift card to purchase whatever you want

      • Or you can give the gift card free to me

        • Did it work?

    • Yes. In fact they often encourage you to spend it straight away on a new phone there and then. They will offer discounts on the phone if you do that - just be sure you've researched phone price discounts before you go in.

  • Has anyone tried porting out to another provider like Aldi for less than 30 days and successfully gotten this deal?

I’m currently with JB Hi-Fi Mobile and considering porting to Aldi to take advantage of the deal.

  • +1

I remember someone took advantage of this deal to get a heavily discounted iPad after cancelling.
    I assume it still works?

    • It's your gift card, spend it how you wish?

    • Yea

  • +1

    Thanks op.

3x Aldi sims for $5 activated, ported to JB and cancelled.

Minimum $900 for free, maximum $1200 or so if Telstra refund me for the first month on all 3 services.

    • Do they do a credit check?

      • I believe they do, I would also have some caution as I was threatened by a telstra chat person recently that they would report me to the store for having opened and cancelled too many times recently.

I would have done it 5x this year.

        • +3

I guess you'll find out when you go back for number 6.

        • Do you have 6k of stuff to buy from JB or are you just selling the GCs for $?

          • @nigel deborah: Wasn’t this exact deal, but was very similar ones for phones and iPads etc.

Sold most of the stuff, GCs went to a friend to use.

        • Yup, I’m on the same boat. Will continue this in 2025 as I’ve cancelled too many plans already

          • @BargainsGrabber: What do you do with that many devices?
Can we return the phone and get full refund after cancellation plan with jb?

            • @Shahaniyasir: This deal does not come with a phone. Its just a 1400 jb gift card.

      • does this affect credit score?

    • So a new sim card at aldi is only around $1.60 each right now?

  • +1

I'm in the market for an ipad so comparing it to this - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/848012

    Previous deal was a mobile broadband deal with $1000 off + $69/mo + $500 cancellation fee so $1000-$569 = $431 profit

    vs this one $1200 - $89 - $800 = $311 proft

    • also looking for the same. thanks for breaking this down

  • do we have to pay the $800 fee back upon deactivation? or is it over a period of time

    • I manually paid the invoice generated by Telstra a day or so after purchasing

      • @PR0r did telstra send you an invoice once you cancelled the service with them?

        • I got sent an invoice upon cancel. Can pay immediately, otherwise the full amount is charged to nominated card on 10 Jan (for me)

  • If i sign up, can I use the sim in an Inseego PRO 5G M3200 modem? Or does it need to be a specific sim or plan for mobile broadband?

  • I signed up a few days ago for the 1,100 gift card. Is there any way for me to get the extra $100?

  • Can some pro shed some light on what to tell Telstra i.e. what reason to give for cancellation? is it via phone or chat? TIA

    • That you want to rip them off

      • 🤣

      • Haha or that I am Ozbargainer ;)

    • +1

Your wifed spent all your savings, maxed out 4 credit cards, you lost your job today, and because of this, you can no longer afford this plan.

      • Hahaha

      • +1

Don't forget to mention your kid's electric scooter burnt down your house and your wife's boy friend bought a Mustang with your credit card.

      • Haha this should work

    • it does not matter, you have the right to cancel for any reason.

  • Apologies for asking this question again , but what’s the cheapest way to buy a new sim and port into this plan ? Do Amaysim $2 SIM’s work ?

    • You can't activate the Sim card without buying credit. Minimum Amaysim credit is $10.

    • I think aldi may be the best.

  • Do they give you the gc immediately? So I can buy a new phone on the spot after signing up?

  • -1

Can anyone please confirm if i buy phone and cancel contract how much i will end up paying and I will still get to keep $1200 gc?

  • Last time I did it was $766 cancel fee not $800. Someone pls confirm the exact cancellation fee amt.

    • I signed up this morning; informed the cancellation fee is $800.

    • Cancelled this afternoon. Invoice for $766 from Telstra

      • @Edwog when did you sign up

        • +1

          Today. 11am ish

      • Did you call or live chat?

I went via live chat (on the telstra website), clicked the prompts etc and landed with a jb-hifi agent and they wouldnt refund the 89$! Spewing

        • +1

Same thing with me via live chat. Even asked about reversing charge for cooling off period blah blah. No dice haha

        • try using the My Telstra app, as long as your signed in, use the chat from there and you'll get your refund 😉

        • Try another agent.

        • call telstra directly you have a better chance of waiving

      • Can we pay the invoice using gc to save more?

        • No, your paying Telstra directly, not JB hifi

  • +1

Hi All, quick question can I stack the the GC vouchers for an iphone? Thanks.

    • +1

      Yes

    • I am sorry bit a silly question. After cancelling can we return the phone & use the credit to buy something else?

      • Return what phone??

    • Aren’t they are offering free phone on contract? Do you mean after cancelling the contract and paying by giftcard?

      • You just sign up to the plan by porting from somewhere else, like Aldi $5 prepaid. Once ported, the give you the physical $1200 gift card as well as the jb sim for the number you’ve bright over. You can use that gift card or multiple if porting multiple over to buy a phone, tv whatever.

  • +1

I can’t seem to find $5 prepaid anywhere where I live - could I port to JB using my number, get the gift card, port back to my old provider and then cancel it without losing my number?

    • you can but its a risk of messing up if you use the phone for things like banking etc. safer to get a new sim

  • +3

    Used this today. My experience:

Purchased $10 Coles prepaid SIM so I didn't have to worry about current phone number.

Activated with new number, 5-10 mins.

Went to JB, ported to Telstra. No issues. Bit awkward not knowing the phone number by heart haha.

Used the $1200 gift card in-store for a sound system I'd been eyeing off. Seemed like there would be no issue in just taking the gift card though.

Logged into Telstra App chat and have already cancelled service. Could NOT get a refund for the initial $89 charge despite asking. $766.59 to break contract.

    $1200 - ($766.59+$89) = $344 profit

    • +2

Same as my experience, except I did it with 2x aldi $5 sims.

Only charged 89$ on initial number via credit card, and the second number was signed up via bank account (hoping they dont take out another 89$ next month for this)

Live chatted via telstra website but the prompts brought me to chat with a jb-hifi agent i suspect.
      Couldnt get the 89$ refunded.

First number $766 repayment and second number 799 repayment.

      • @druzyp did you buy the aldi sims instore or online?

        • +1

In store. Bring sims with you when signing up at jb. They need to send a text to it to verify the number

    • Isn’t the gift card put toward price of phone?

      • Gift card can go towards anything

    • I am sorry bit a silly question. After cancelling can we return the phone & use the credit to buy something else ?

      • Yes as long as it’s not open. The GC can be used on any item.

    • Did u call or use the app. With a phone call you may have had better luck but still a good days profit.

  • Anyone else having issues with porting in? Signed up in store and haven't been able to get my gift card because the port from Aldi hasn't gone through yet.

    • Sometimes there are delays as they jbhifi/telstra backend had to do the port over.

  • if you sign up and port out to another company without cancelling , is there same $800 cancellation fee. Anyone wanna shed some light ?

    • +1

Almost certainly. It is a breach of contract. I'd say that you'd receive the $800 on your final Telstra bill as an Early Termination Charge

    • When you port out it triggers a cancellation the same way as if you called the telstra or jbhifi team

  • +1

Bought 2x aldi sims but came in pretty late 30 mins before they closed, they said couldn’t do it as they needed more time. So I’m gonna try on Boxing Day hopefully they don’t change the terms from all these cancellations lol.

    • We got in the store at 5:30 PM too, were lucky to get it all sorted.

  • +2

Ok, so ported 2 x nos this evening and cancelled services half an hour after activation. Was able to get 2 × $89 refunded via Telstra chat. Total payment $1532 ( 2 x 766) for $2400 gift cards. Nice Xmas gift 😀

    • Did they refund it instantly? The person I spoke to said they’d personally work on the refunds then send me an email. They are sitting as pending in my account so maybe they have to wait.

      • +1

Yes, pending but they have requested a refund of those amounts as soon as those amounts are posted. The refund should be completed in 5-7 days

  • -1

I'm still on Telstra, is there a hack where I can sign up and still port my previous number?

  • All they need to do is update the terms to peg the early termination fee to the voucher value too. Literally a few words and the whole deal can be "fixed" from JB's perspective. Is it just a lack of care on JB's part or is this a deliberate deal for whatever reason….

  • Can I buy Apple Gift Cards using the JB Hi-Fi Gift Cards?

  • Anyone know how often this can be done? I've ported in and cancelled the same number twice within the past 6 months already.

  • Can I port in with a new Sim then port in again with my old number?
