    It's for port in only.

      Fixed, thanks!

Looking to get plan and new iPhone. With $1200 and the $89, seems decent. Would there be anything better for Boxing day or New Year's day sales? Like $1400 or discount on Iphones?
My reasoning is, with the $1200 cc, it reduces monthly cost to $39 for the 2 years. So outright phone plus cheap sim plan or this, I worked out it's about the same but on telstra 5G network.

        Anything via Turkey?

        • +11

That would be a turquoise ball, hard to see anything.

      • +2

If only you could have foreseen that.

      • -1

Lo ed the comment, made my day. Even I gave you a plus.

    • u can get jb gc for at least 5% most of the time tho

      • where tho?

    • +1

That’s the selling point, but $1200 cannot be further discounted by other gift cards if you buy at 10 or 15% off.

    • +4

Only if you need that much data. If not, buy iPhone with discounted gift card. For mobile plan just uses prepaid yearly plan.

      • Just curious do people actually use 300gb a month just on their phone. Assuming they also have nbn etc

        • +1

Some people may not even have a pc so it could work for them.

        • +7

Some do. I cancelled my home internet and now use my phone's hotspot for 90% of my internet access. The other 10% is using cheap prepaid cards for when I need my computers to have internet when I'm not there.
          Saves me $70/mth.

          • @BinaryPirate: Is there more than you using the hotspot? If not would it work for more than one ?

            • @corky: Curious would a fair usage policy apply? Or wqs that only for unlimited

              • @ATTS: I have optus data plan unlimited but lose speed after 20g so guess slowed speed would be an issue

            • @corky: It should work. In the past i hotspotted to 3 device and my own device for the food service orders ( pickup)

              • @ATTS: Thanks for that. Will give it a go

            • @corky: It would work for as many connections as my phone can sustain but the data limit would preclude additional users at my current data usage rate.

            • @corky: .. as long as they only expect internet when you are home…

          • +1

            @BinaryPirate: Nice saving!

          • +4

@BinaryPirate: I also use my girls hotspot 90% of the time and the other 10% using cheap prepaid whores.

    • -5

Whats the difference with android vs ios?

    • Not usually, mate. This is their usual deal for Boxing Day and Black Friday. I can't think of a deal with, say, $1400 off iPhones - have you seen one in the past?

    • +2

      New Year's day sales

      ?

      Is that even a thing?

    • Nah man, you can get boost 365 plan for like $200 or less…

    • Sign up to get GC and then cancel the service to obtain JB Hifi GC at heavily discounted % (Previous deals for both new and port-in customers).

      • How can you cancel if it’s a 2 year contract ?

        • -1

          What’s the neg vote for?

          • -1

            @Slo20: yah, go figure??

        • -1

While it says it’s a 2 year plan, you just have to pay the ETC which I believe most people are doing this

    • +5

      Yes

I just switched back to Optus from Telstra last month with the $120 prepaid deal. My connection is inferior by quite a margin.

I will probably go for this deal.
I can claim 100% on tax, both phone and plan, but claim full cost of the phone.
So the effective cost is a lot lower.
$1200 is effectively $50 a month. Makes the plan $39 a month plus a full priced phone if you use your voucher, all of which is deductible for some.

      Also, something something voucher cost.

      • but claim full cost of the phone.

You cab only claim full cost for items under $300.

Over $300, you use the depreciation method.

        • +1

not for business? you can claim it in one hit, been buying laptop and phones every couple of years.

        • +1

Can do this with salary packaging too as a separate sum allocated to "electronic device" per year.

          • @Jaystea: You can, if your boss doesn't act like it is coming out of their own pocket and deny you.

        • +2

I’m a registered tax agent if anyone wants to check deductions for their own personal situations

        • Yes thank you, that’s what I do.

        • Wait, phones last you more than one year?

      • +11

        ATO entered the chatroom

        • It’s a question of what the phone is needed and used for.

Since over $300 it should be depreciated over its useful life rather than a straight up deduction if for an individual, not sure about business tax.

But should also be apportioned for personal/work use generally.

          • +3

@WhyAmICommenting: One would assume he is self-employed since that would allow him to write off the full amount straight away.

      • +2

You can claim any phone plan on your tax, whether it's a prepaid plan that costs you $10/month or a premium $100/month plan.

Personally, I'd rather spend less on my phone plan

      • Vodafone (via Kogan) IMO is FAR superior to Optus in every way. It's just the right cost vs performance for myself - 12 month 500GB plan cost me around $150 - $250 or so a year (usually get it on special), 4G performance is perfectly acceptable at all time (in SA where I live and visit). It's on special right now for $219 for 500GB 12 month prepaid.

    • +1

So specifically for this type of deals, I think people try to sell the vouchers which lowers the average cost of the plan. Also, people with their own business/abn etc usually can claim a portion of their plan as business expense.

Personally, I use Woolworths mobile ($40 a month), which uses the Telstra network. It's the best alternative for a decent priced plan on the Telstra network.

      • +1

I use ww for the 10% off each month which is about $20, effectively free mobile, but I might sign up as a second number so I can have a faster data and claim it against the business, after GST, 30% and gc, works out to be about $14 a month.

      • +1

I know someone who can claim $90 a month from work for their personal phone plan. So they sign up to one of these every 2 years and pocket the $1200.

    • I pay like <$20 per month for telstra so i dont understand this either unless its to get the giftcard but would need someone to explain the rate.

      • +1

        What provider and plan please?

      • -1

The expensive plan includes handset repayments. If you want a new phone on a cheaper plan you usually have to pay extra. This deal works for JB because you have to spend your voucher with them, you're locked in for 2 years, and it's harder to change your plan afterwards because you need to use the JB Mobile App

    • +10

I only pay $39 for 100GB at Optus.

      This is $89 / month for 24 months, with $1,200 gift card back, so ($89 * 24 - 1,200) / 24 = $39

So it's the same price for 300GB?

300GB is a lot of data, unless you are using it for home internet which is also wrong and a more expensive solution.

Just because you do not need 300GB of data per month does not mean that others do not.

      • Indeed. I have 360Gb & could easily do with another 150-200/mth.

      • If you value the gift card at $1200 that is

    • -1

I pay $25 for 50GB on Optus no plan and that's more than enough for me seeing as i'm mostly logged into home Wifi anyway. Sure the Coverage isn't quite as good as Telstra but it's rarely bothered me. I hate PLANS and i swore i would never to go on a Telstra plan again years ago when they stuffed me around. I buy my phones outright but i can see this deal would appeal to some already suckered into the Telstra Network if it's the only option for a decent signal. I'm sure they have some bloatware that makes $89/month seem more appetizing.

      • Felix brah

    • Your comparison is flawed. If you compare the 2 years difference you'd pay $936 over 2 years at $39/m. Whereas with this you'd pay $2,136 over 2 years but with $1,200 GC bringing it down to $936. So really, you are spending the same in the end except that you won't get access to Telstra network and that you are getting 1/3rd of the data.

Also the true bargain lies in the cancellation hack, which has been discussed numerous times in previous threads

    • Optus lowest plan is now $52

    • I agree with you! I couldn't possibly see myself ever spending $90/month on a phone plan.

I'm on a Woolies mobile 6 month plan which auto tops up and get 100gb for $100. $15/month for 15gb per month is way more than enough for me and I usually get that $15 back if I organise my grocery trips properly.

  • So they've fixed the 800 fixed repayment

    • Ive just read still Max at 800 repayment. Am I missing anything?

      • Yeah is this same as previous loophole? I’m confused…

        • +2

The only thing is different part "The $1200 JB Hi-Fi Gift Card will replace the value of the Voucher stated in the Critical Information Summary". So does it mean now Max repayment fee is now $1200?

      • Read this

The $1200 JB Hi-Fi Gift Card will replace the value of the Voucher stated in the Critical Information Summary. If you cancel or move to a lower cost/different plan then you must pay a Voucher Repayment Fee to Telstra pro-rated against the remaining months of your plan’s minimum term

        • I only did a few months ago and opted for a new number because was worried how it would affect my current plan. If I have to port in and use same number this time how is current plan affected if I still cancel straight away?

        • Wording's been the same in previous deals

        • +1

As mentioned in many deals and an FAQ created here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/866578

The Voucher isn’t the same as the Voucher Repayment Fee. While they said they’ll replace the $800 voucher with $1200, this hasn’t happened at all. You can always ask for a CIS to be printed prior to you signing the final page

          • @BargainsGrabber: This is correct. I doubted it recently because the wording looks like the repayment amount adapts to the higher voucher value but it doesn’t. Anyone can always ask them to confirm in store before you sign up to anything

          • -1

@BargainsGrabber: The $1200 will show on your My Telstra App under "Repayment of sign up bonus", which will decrease every month as you continue on the plan.

  • +2

Are the JB plans able to access Telstra One Number for an Apple Watch?

That seems to be the only reason nowadays to sign up directly with one of the big three.

    • yeah like to know if I can some how leverage this for the kid's apple watch.

      • +1

If you're setting up a watch standalone without a phone (kids mode) then look at Better Roaming

    • +2
      • Next question would be. Would my kids watch also see all my message and phone records or even start buzzing when someone calls me?

    • +2

Telstra annouced earlier in the year that they have opened up watch Sims to Telstra wholesale customers.

Apparently tangerine mobile is going to be one of the first to implement it.

So I think it's now just on the wholesaler to update their systems to support it.

I guess what I'm saying it, it should be coming soonishHopefully.

      • That's good to know, thanks! Something to look forwards to.

    • +2

I can confirm that it works; my wife's Apple Watch has connected to Telstra One Number on a JB plan.

      • I can confirm as well my kid connected Telstra one number though it as well.

    • +1

Yes I am on the old JB plan w/ an additional sim for my watch.

    • +1

I sign up for this plan every two years and, yes, I have always been able to add in my Telstra One Number for Apple Watch.

      • Can the $5 Sim card be used with any phone instead of an Apple watch?

        • It’s not like that. It’s a $5 add-on to another plan, using that plan’s data.

          • @mctock: So it's just a data sim card? Can't make calls or send text messages?

            • +1

@KirKoloft: There’s no physical SIM card involved. For $5 a month, if you have a cellular-enabled Apple Watch, you can have your watch access the network, use data, make and receive calls, using the number for your phone.

So, one can go out for a run without taking one’s phone, and still be reachable, still download something to listen to, etc.

It’s a function that Telstra, Optus and Voda don’t open up to their MNVO’s. as someone else has said in this thread, it’s pretty much the only reason left not to go with an MNVO.

For me, this gift card deal helps ease the pain of paying Telstra prices.

Now, if you’re looking for an Apple Watch that isn’t paired to a particular phone, you should check out what they now call “Apple Watch for your kids”, which gets the watch itself its own number. https://www.apple.com/au/apple-watch-for-your-kids/
