Yep avoid, this is the HP Inkjet of the coffee pod world (cheap for the machine, expensive for the disposables and lack of competitor alternatives).
What's best cheap machine that can use generic pods
I ended up with the Essenza Mini Solo. Already had the Aeroccino, so didn't need that. Got it for $129 @ GG's

Didn’t like vertuo pods at all, seems to be very large cups it extracts.
The original pods are better IMO.

Vertuo isn’t for everyone’s taste, but this is a decent pack for the price. Not ATL for Vertuo POP machine by itself but with the pods and accessories, this is an ok deal.
Cheap, but can't use generic pods. Keep this in mind if purchasing. We just switched away from a Vertuo due to the cost/annoyance of that
