Brass Monkey 25L Portable Fridge/Freezer $199 + $25 Delivery ($0 C&C/ In-Store) @ Jaycar

260

I saw pembajak-indo's post on the 74L Brass Monkey Fridge/Freezer for $249 at Jaycar and it reminded me I still had a $100 voucher mum gave me last Christmas.

I'm crossing The Nullabor back to WA next month, and figured instead of an esky, one of these would work a treat! Especially since our car has a 12V plug in the boot.
I read/watched a bunch of reviews across the range of smaller options and ended up settling on 25L metal version. Size is great and it has some extra functionality that may or may not be a bit gimmicky.

I bought one at my local, seemed to be varying stock of different models at different locations in SA.

I also ended up buying the cover for $79 on sale which seems like a rip off but the only negatives I heard from reviews of the fridge i chose was potentially poor insulation on the sides (and it adds some pockets and tie downs and will protect it a bit).

Not ATL for this model, but the same deal posted 3 months ago did fairly well.

There are many more sizes and versions on sale too at Jaycar.

I bought mine today and so far hasn't skipped a beat. It's been about 2 hours.

Has 3 year warranty too though.

  • Does this fit in a tesla model y in the hidden space in the trunk?

    • According to this comment thread… Seems like it might!

I bought this exact model 2 weeks ago and can confirm it fits in the Tesla y boot cavity space.
To use it whilst away you have to keep the car in camp mode, the fridge unit doesn’t actually drain the car battery to much coz it’s only 45w rating so would take a long time to drain the battery ( in theory) however what actually drains the battery is the camp model itself. It keeps the climate going and I haven’t been able to figure out how to turn climate off but keep the power going. The climate turned it self off after 2hours by then it used 10% of our battery on a 30 degree day in Melbourne last weekend but managed to keep an ice cream cake hard. Helps to put in ice block to bring the temp down when doing precooling or if you don’t have time.

Hey that comment linked confirming it works and fits was me, just FYI Tesla has killed the rear 12v power outlets when the car is unoccupied and locked. As mentioned by aznmadness you have to change the car to camp mode but then you lose sentry if doing that.

There are rumours Tesla will add it back as a toggle later but just pure rumours at the moment.

Other option is to grab a Kings power pack and leave it plugged in and providing pass through power while driving and power the fridge while off.

    Cover prices are rediculous.
Glue / tape some neoprene around the sides.

  • Was just looking at their website, looks like a bunch of models/sizes are on sale.

  • If you see the fridge operating in person you’ll see how cold the outside of the fridge gets. The insulation of this fridge is not adequate and you’ll find the compressor will constantly turn on which will chew through your battery off (depending on your setup and application). The salesman was honest and said he didn’t recommend it. I have seen and read a few other reviews which also make the comment of poor efficiency.

    • Can you recommend a better one? Looks like the cover is a low cost solution for this problem

Better at the same price or better at any price?

The salesman recommended getting the grey series of Brass Monkey Fridges instead, the hard plastic ones which have better insulation. Based on my research these are also sold as Alpicool overseas and there are several reviews on YouTube. I’m still in the research phase atm and haven’t pulled the trigger on a fridge so I can’t wholeheartedly recommend a fridge around the same price. I’m sure other people will have better real world recommendations.

    • Saw a YouTube review mention it condenses on the outside aswell. Not something you want happening with the cover on, gonna get moldy quick

  • Can I connect it to a power bank to keep it running?

    • Yes, if your power bank has a 12V cig socket.

  • This is 30L https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/845842 I wonder any difference between both except the storage?

  • Got the 30L version (plastic).
Now to try make a battery back using ozito batteries. Since the fridge can take either 12v or 24v it should be able to accept 18v batteries with out step up/down converter?
