See jaycar got yet another sale on their brassmonkeys.

Got myself a cover for the 60L for $38.95 I got few months ago. Not the best quality but for the price not bad. Been running 24/7. Had to replace one handle as broke, but quick replacement. 1 day from local store.

Even the little 15L cover is $38.95. Bit much I reckon. Not sure it’s necessary as mine has been running beautifully for two years now without one.

Does anyone know…if you have a brass monkey fridge, and you have one of the inbuilt batteries, do you need to use a solar controller when recharging the batteries? Or just go straight from the panels to fridge?

    • Most solar panels you buy off the shelf will have a charge controller as part of it, you cant just buy panels and stick it onto the battery though.

Actually just found this on the Brass Monkey website:

These fridges can be powered by other solar panels, as long as they have an output no larger than 100watts, and the panels do not have a solar controller built-in. You must always have an internal battery installed in the fridge, if you are connecting solar panels to the fridge.

And the specs on their 100w blanket says:

This 100W Solar Blanket, will keep a battery supported Brass Monkey Fridge/Freezer running for the entire trip without the need for mains power or a noisy generator. The blanket is designed to connect directly to Brass Monkey Fridge/Freezers with a Lithium Battery and solar support. Lay the blanket in full sunlight on the ground, across the car bonnet or other suitable surface, and plug it directly into the fridge via the 2.1mm DC jack.

So i guess because its less than 100w then it doesn't need a separate controller.

        • The solar blanket lists a Vmpp and a Voc, which suggests the controller is built in.

E: nvm, guess theres a charge controller or something built into the fridge. Probably as these fridges can operate on 12V or 24V.

It should not be used to directly charge any battery, as there is no voltage regulator.

Thanks OP, nabbed a cover and extension lid.

Don't forget that RTM Road Tech Marine has all the same stuff at the same prices if the locations work out better for you.

  • If have an ABN/business, sign up to https://www.electusdistribution.com.au/ - however you'd have to include postage and be a pain for warranty vs buying at Jaycar/RTM
