Dune 45L Fridge/Freezer + Dune Powered Battery Box + Century N70T Battery + Dune Folding Solar Blanket $899 in-Store @ Anaconda

80

Came across this camping combo deal. Looks decent for anyone wanting to get an off grid fridge/power setup. Looks like it's in store or click and collect only as they won't ship the battery.

Dune 45L fridge/freezer(anacondastores.com) $599 on it's own
Dune Powered Battery Box(anacondastores.com) $59.99 on its own
Century N70T Battery(anacondastores.com) $259 on its own
Dune Folding Solar Blanket(anacondastores.com) $249 on its own

So that would cost $1,166.99 if purchased separately at their current sale prices and significantly more at regular prices.

    Good price but thats an old school lead acid battery and it weights 25kg!

    • -3

      Well yeah, that's how much lead batteries weigh. You wouldn't be getting lithium at this price.

      • +2

        There are regular deals for 100ah lithiums for around this mark. While I think this deal is ok, IMO if you're dropping this kind of coin on a decent camping setup nowadays you're crazy getting AGM. Half the capacity for twice the weight.

          I just paid ~$475 for 300ah lifepo4. That's over 4x the usable capacity of one of these.

          They're pretty bulky, but not that heavy. So damn cheap.

          • @Grunef: Wow that's a great price for a 300ah! What did you get? That's a decent price for 200ah, let alone 300ah.

    While I do think the Dune stuff looks better, you can get a similar Kings kit cheaper at 4WD Supacentre, with LiFePO4 Battery that weighs 10Kg less and a bonus Fridge Cover for slightly cheaper.

    A quick price check, without going through all the deals/bundle comes out to the following.
    45L Fridge (with bonus Fridge Cover) $399.00(4wdsupacentre.com.au)
    100Ah Lithium Battery (with bonus Battery Box) $283.95(4wdsupacentre.com.au)
    120W Solar Blanket with PWM Controller $188.95(4wdsupacentre.com.au)
    Total comes to $871.90

      Never met someone rolling with Kings gear that didn't happily give an earful about how poor it is to anyone who'll listen

      • +5

        I'm sure that would happen with a lot of brands, to be honest. I'm not endorsing them, by any means, but I think they have their place. Usually pretty fine for the occasional camping trip, but if you were serious about getting the best gear, you wouldn't be looking at the Dune kit either.

        For myself i have an Oztrail 50L(?) fridge that's been running well for a few years now. My old Waeco unit had nothing but troubles running on 12V, and had the control board replaced twice and the thermostat replaced once before I gave up on it.

        For peace of mind, the 5 years warranty on the Kings Fridge matches that of the Dune unit, though I've heard they can be pretty troublesome with warranty issues.

          Agree with this completely - if you're considering this deal, then the King's gear should suffice. If you want quality neither of those brands would be considered.

          I also bought a cheap Oztrail 50L fridge, been used as a backup beer fridge for 3 years, been running 24/7. I did have to get a warranty repair to fix the wiring behind the power socket which was a very easy process with a local repairer.

    • I've had that Kings 45 litre fridge for 3 years, including a trip to Cape York (via the OTT) in 2022. It's quiet, good on battery power (under 1.5A per hour @ 2c in the low 30s), and temperature stable. It has a 5 year warranty - not many other camping fridges have one this long.

      TL;DR - the Kings 45l is a great buy.

      • +1

        That's great, but a sample size of 1 unit doesn't make it a great product. It's hard to argue that the king's gear isn't cheaply made. For the record I'm not saying the Dune stuff is necessarily any better, but I do think that Anaconda is better with warranty claims than Kings.

    At this day and age it doesn't make sense to buy a lead acid battery to use for appliances. There heavier and can only use half of the rated capacity.

    • I agree, but the old one might be better if you are afraid of explosions.

      • +2

        I haven't heard of any issues with LiFePO4 batteries. Lithium-ion and Lipo are the ones that tend to cause the problems.

    • I agree, but it's a cheap starting point and would be easy to upgrade to lithium at any time.

      • +4

        But aren't they essentially a bit useless once they drop below 50% capacity, (so they are less than 50ah in reality) and then you damage them if you do run them below 20% capacity? You'd be better off getting a little lightweight 60ah LiFePo4 from Kings for $149, surely. These deep cycle batteries have had their day.

  • I had a very bad experience with the kings folding solar blanket substantially under the specs - wouldn’t go there again.

      Aha just about all solar panels have "optimistic" specs :)

    No coincidence that ALDI has similar components on sale last week.
    * 50 litre fridge for $329
    * 200W solar mat $229
    * 100Ah Lithium battery $ 449
    * Battery box $50

    $1057 total

    I'd rather pay more fro the ALDI setup. Lithium is way better.
