For a standard 1.8m tree, what amount of length does everyone recommend?

    • +3

      48m. You'll have a very brilliant tree!

      • Won't see no greenery! hahah

    • +2

I had the Twinkly 250 for my 1.8m tree and it was ok. Not super dense in LEDs but it was good enough. But we just got a new 2.4m tree, and I am upgrading to the 600 LED model now.

    • If you want to go for full Twinkly effects, I would go for this one (the 600 light).

    • We're using a string of 200 Twinkly Pearls on our 1.8m tree - and loving it. About 7 loops around the tree.

    • iirc Twinkly's pre-lit tree has 500 on it and it looks pretty good, at least in their press photos

    • 250 Twinkly on my same size tree looks good! Could pack more for more detailed effects though

    • We have 450 rgbw on our tree. Sure we could have 600 but I use the 600 string outside

    • We've got a 7ft (or maybe 8ft) tall Xmas tree, and 600 twinkly leds was nice last year, but this year we have 2x 600 sets on it, and it is beyond amazing.

  • There is also a 750 RGB for $281…but from Germany - about 2 left

Do these daisy chain? What homeassistant/automation systems do they use?
Are they waterproof?? What IP rating?

Not much info on the amazon page!

They seem expensive, especially as it seems you need quite a lot of them.

I'm wanting to light up my pergola, approx 6x4m. I think I'd need about 4 strings of 600….??

How spaced are the LEDs on the string? 48m / 600 = 80mm??

Otherwise these look like a fairly good option.

These lights are incredible, check out twinkly's website for more information - But they are app controlled, chain across sets and integrate with HA as well as even native HomeKit etc.

      • -1

Fair enough - they are 80mm spaced as assumed.
        Are they Zigbee/Thread/Wifi - I'm guessing wifi.
Do you know what IP rating they might be?
I suspect they're fine outside but are they actually fine outside - otherwise I might have to look at the permanent ones.

Oh - also do they do a nice standard warm white - or typical RGB yellow which is pretty garish?

        • +1

We have Twinkly lights (I don't think this exact one) and HA and it works nicely together. They use wifi but are local, and have their own HA integration: https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/twinkly/

Not sure about the IP rating - we got ours last year and I don't know if we still have the box :P.

        • Get the RGB+W ones if you want a white version. This is what I have, and it's great. Mind you, I wouldn't keep these outside in the sun/elements for years. I do not think you will get a long life if you do that. A proper permanent outdoor light kit would be more up your alley, I would have thought. Like the Eufy one, maybe?

        • There is also a Twinkly music dongle - additional item, usually about $35-$40 - which synchronises the lights to external music (has a microphone essentially).

    • +1

Yes you can daisy chain, but via software not hardware. You can't daisy chain them via one power plug, instead just plug them in separately and then when setting them up in the App tell them to add more strings to the same group.

      • Thanks, very helpful. Making my decision to steer away a little easier as I'd like to make longer strings.

        • If you are looking to extend them then unfortunately no, you can't with Twinkly. I believe this is due to power draw and also because each string controller is not removable.

However you can certainly put several strings on the same tree and sync them to make them act like one string, via the App.

I have 2 of this on my front hedges measuring approximately 1m H x 15M W. It really nice, while the lights are waterproof, i dont think the control and power is. I bought waterproofing power boxes for them just incase.

  • Wow. They're not cheap are they. Even on sale.

    • They've been cheap before. $72 for the 400 light ones a couple of years ago. Still working great for us.

      • IIRC, they were twinkly compatible lights from a different manufacturer. I got the 600 LED version of those and have two of them on my Christmas tree this year.

    • define 'cheap'…
you can build your own LED's, or buy from Aliexpress for not much $$$

but you won't be able to throw those on a tree and point your camera at it to have a perfectly mapped image

  • Don't see a promo code?

    • Not needed through Amazon - was a 'daily deal'

      • I think Larry is referring to the part in the post that says "Save a further $15 when you redeem with promo code."

I love my Twinkly lights, but only play with them between 1-Dec and 1-Jan. Just using their app is great and I recommend people stick with the app and don’t look any further into what they can do.
People with 3 kids, one being a new bourn, definitely shouldn’t look into using "artnet to twinkly" software to integrate them into xlights to run complicated scheduled sequences. It works great but the learning curve while time poor is frustrating (everyone in the family) each year.

  • Delivery 30th december now! I swear it said december 14th only 10 minute's beforehand! Thats a shame!

    • Lol - I went with the 750 from Germany (there was only 3) and delivery is 3rd Jan !

    • Back to dec 15 now
